  • Federal appeals court allows National Guard deployment in Washington to continue for now

The decision stays a lower court ruling that had blocked the troops’ presence.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday ruled that the National Guard deployment in Washington, D.C. is allowed to continue for now, staying a lower court ruling that had ordered an end to it.

The three-judge panel for U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that Trump may prevail in his argument that in D.C., a federal district, the president “possesses a unique power” to mobilize the Guard. The ruling stops the implementation of U.S. District Court Judge Jia Cobb’s Nov. 20 opinion and order. Cobb had ruled that the deployment illegally intrudes on local officials’ authority to direct law enforcement in the district.

The unanimous 32-page ruling went on to say that other factors also favored the Trump administration, including the “disruption to the lives of thousands of service members,” as well as what it said was the president’s interest “in the protection of federal governmental functions and property within the Nation’s capital.”

The judges found that the District “has not identified any ongoing injury to its statutory interests.”

Wednesday’s ruling is not final, but it acknowledged that the Trump administration has a strong case for its appeal based on the factors the court examined.

    Crime

The suspect, Brian Keazer, was in his early 20s at the time of the homicide.

A Boston man was arrested in connection with a 1997 cold case on Tuesday.

Brian Keazer, 50, was arrested in Jamaica Plain by officers assigned to the Boston Police Fugitive Unit at around 12:15 p.m. He had been wanted on a warrant for the murder of Ruth Foster, 56, of Boston, police say.

  • Traveling for the holidays? Beware these common scams, lawmakers warn

Lawmakers are warning travelers to beware a range of scams that tend to proliferate during the holiday season, including phishing schemes involving phony websites, as well as criminals who impersonate airlines and hotels.

Online travel fraud has surged, accounting for $1 trillion in global financial losses in 2024, according to Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), which issued the warning on Wednesday. For example, such scams can lead to consumers paying for fake trips or to book accommodations that look nothing like how they are pictured online.

“While the winter holidays are one of the busiest travel seasons of the year, they’re also one of the busiest seasons for scammers impersonating airlines, hotels and rental platforms,” U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan, the panel’s ranking member, said in a statement. “As millions of Americans prepare to travel to see their loved ones over the next few weeks, everyone should also prepare to protect themselves against rampant travel scams.”

The JEC, a bipartisan group of House and Senate lawmakers that advises Congress on economic issues, also called on the Federal Trade Commission to indicate what steps it is taking alongside U.S. technology companies to protect consumers from overseas scam networks. Organized foreign criminals stole $10 billion from Americans in 2024, up 66% from the prior year.

In a letter, the panel pressed the FTC to detail how it is working with social media sites, dating platforms, financial technology companies and other actors to disrupt travel fraud. Lawmakers also requested details on how much money the FTC has allocated to protect Americans from overseas fraud.

The panel’s Democratic minority cited data from travel and payment firms showing a sharp rise in online fraud around the holidays.

Travel fraud is among the most common types of criminal activity, according to the FTC, which said it accounted for $274 million in U.S. consumer losses in 2024. Research from the Mastercard Economics Institute has found that fraud spikes by up to 28% during peak travel seasons.

    Common travel scams

Criminals employ a range of tactics to extract payment details or other personal information from travelers. One common ploy is to send a text message claiming that a person’s flight has been canceled, according to the JEC.

“These texts, which appear to come from major airlines, direct customers to a fake number or link to rebook their travel,” warned the panel, which advises people to verify any schedule changes with their airline.

Scammers may also pose as legitimate business representatives in replying to travelers’ social media posts about flight delays or other travel headaches. In addition, fraudsters are known to pay to appear in online search results, advertising phony customer service numbers that lead directly to a scammer.

    How to avoid getting burned

The JEC advised travelers always to consult official company websites or apps when seeking information, and not to click on links sent by text or email directing them to a website. Consumers should also be leery of online ads, sponsored search results or links posted on social media, the lawmakers warned.

If a travel company is unfamiliar, meanwhile, the panel advises travelers to check sites like the Better Business Bureau, where other customers can post reviews and complaints. Clues indicating a possible scam include misspelled or extra words in a website address.

Consumers should also beware vendors that describe accommodations as luxurious, but don’t provide details such as a hotel’s name or location, the JEC said. If a company does not list its cancellation or refund policy, or requests payment in cryptocurrency, that could also be suspicious, according to the committee.

  • Effective Parenting Rules for Mothers with Sons

Last Updated on December 17, 2025 by Joshua Isibor

The effective parenting rules for mothers with sons, unlike every other parenting rule, there are very crucial knowledge and skills every mother with sons must have to instill the same to their sons.

Living in a society where the male gender is considered superior to the female gender, hence being favored more than the females, to change the narrative, you must first unlearn to relearn, and reset the mindset from what was being circulated.

The rate of violence against women and children are two major effects of this mindset of male superiority.
Moreover, the female gender is not considered fit for some particular work or functions.
The generation past has made this mistake but this has to be changed in this 21st century and it starts with you, mothers with sons.

10 Effective Parenting Rules For Mothers With Sons

    Rule number 1

Teach your sons to be accountable.

Accountability is one of the values you must teach your sons. Don’t be loose with your sons in the sense that, you allow them to do things as they wish without accounting for it, just because they’re boys.
Teach them the same moral values you teach your girls. When they misbehave, the same measure of discipline you use for the girls should also be used for the boys. This will make them know that moral values are for both gender, and none is expected to be better behaved.

    Rule number 2

Get your sons involved in house chores.

pic of a son doing house chores

Growing up, I witnessed a lot of parents who tell their girls that house chores are for girls not boys, so, they shouldn’t expect their brothers to be involved in chores.
Truth is, this pattern is still on and you must change it if you want to raise a wholesome boy.
Involving your sons in chores doesn’t make them inferior nor does it make them superior. House chores are one of the ways to teach your child responsibility. You can’t raise a responsible son if you do not teach him responsibility.

    “If you’re raising a son, you’re training someone’s husband” – Matthew L Jacobson

A son that’s raised with the mindset that chores are for girls would never be able to help his wife when the need be, and this could cause a lot of damage in his marriage/family relationship.

Chores teach children coordination. Your son needs to know to be coordinated because he would need that skill in his workplace tomorrow.

    Rule number 3

Don’t make your girl take responsibility for your son’s misbehavior.
Many parents would scold their girls for not putting the house in order, the same house that was scattered by their sons. Instead of scolding the son, the girl takes the blame. Do not raise your son to think that he’s free to misbehave. Let him be responsible for his actions. If he scatters the house, he should arrange it.

    Rule number 4

Allow your son to express himself. By this I mean, he should express his emotions the way he is comfortable with. If he wants to cry, let him cry.

Being a parent coach and mother to three active sons, I can boldly tell you that your son gets better when he expressed his emotions in his most comfortable way.
Don’t teach your son to buckle his emotions. Avoid the same statement frequently and ignorantly used by some parents “stop crying, boys don’t cry or you’re a man, you should behave like one, stop behaving like a woman”
It’s really sad to say that the increased rate of domestic violence is a result of adults who were not taught the right way to express their emotions, so they resort to hitting.
Your sons also have emotions, just like your girls. Allow them to express it, only coach them to manage it properly not to buckle it up.
This also affects their mental health which could result in suicidal thoughts.

    Rule number 5

Teach your sons how to cook and wash their clothes.
Cooking and washing are a survival skills every child should have whether a boy or a girl.
It’s also a medium to change the mindset of “a woman’s life ends in the kitchen”.
Your son could find himself in a different environment with a different set of people, his ability to take care of himself would be a great help for him.
Some young men today, go into relationships not because they are ready but because they do not have the basic life skills, so, they need a lady that would take care of those aspects for them.

An instance is, when a man is seen washing his clothes, you will hear statements like “go and marry” in other words, they shouldn’t wash their clothes or cook because of their gender.

Don’t raise your son in this manner!

    Rule number 6

Be part of your son’s life.

Your sons also have emotional needs, they also need affection, they also need someone to talk to, someone to pour out their hearts to. Your sons also battle with a lot of things within.

You can’t know this if you’re not involved.

The suicidal rate in teens is on the higher rate now and one would wonder why. This is because they were not able to handle the situation and the last solution they could think of is death. But when you are involved, they would open up to you and your advice would bring a major difference.

Do you know that the same way girls suffer body shaming and bullying are the same way boys suffer it too?

Do you also know that sexual abuse is not only for girls, boys also get sexually abused?

Until you get involved, you will be a stranger to your son’s life and it definitely does not end well most of the time.

I have been privileged to teach and mentor some teenagers. Most of the reports I’ve got all center on parents not being involved in their lives. There’s always a vacuum that needs to be filled up. In an attempt to fill this vacuum, so many have been lead astray.

    Rule number 7

Intentionally teach your sons that girls also have their own life to live.
Your sons should know that marrying a woman isn’t just for the sake of giving birth. Teach them to know that the phrase “Companionship” doesn’t end at satisfying their sexual needs. It entails helping in all-round wellness, financially and otherwise. They shouldn’t end their wives’ duty in the kitchen. Let them be allowed to express their talents and gifts to the world.
Let this knowledge sink deep into your sons.

    Rule number 8

Teach your sons that respect and trust are earned not forced.

One who needs respect must be willing to give out respect. You don’t demand respect, you earn it.
Let your sons respect people if they also need to be respected.
Let them know that respect isn’t about greeting or accepting anything that’s said to them because the person involved is elderly.
Rather, respect is knowing who they are and what they want. They must have respect for their body, respect for others’ opinions, respect for people’s beliefs and generally, respect for humanity.
This would help them to know what to say in every situation and when to say it too.

Respect for their bodies and that of others as well as respect for people’s choices would stop the act of rape.

This quote by Shannon L. Alder further explains it; “To be a mother of a son is one of the most important thing you can do to change the world. Teach them to respect women, raise them to stand up for others, raise them to be kind.”

    Rule number 9

Teach your sons that their fists are meant to protect their woman not to bruise them.

Your sons must be raised with this mindset of you wouldn’t want to be solving violence issues in the future.

This is where the need to talk about the weaker vessels being attributed to the female gender needs to be brought up.

The four most important people they should protect are their mothers, sisters, wives, and every female gender being maltreated by the male gender.

    Rule number 10

Consistently and intentionally abide by the rules stated above if you desire to raise a wholesome son and to change the narrative of gender-based violence/maltreatment.

  • Brown to release early-decision notices as manhunt for shooter continues

As a search continues for the person behind this weekend’s mass shooting, Brown University was planning to issue early-decision admission offers to applicants Wednesday evening.

The Ivy League school delayed the release of the decisions, originally scheduled for Monday, after the shooting left two students dead and nine others wounded on Saturday. The university and public officials were facing mounting questions about security and the investigation as the hunt stretched on with the attacker still at large.

Brown informed applicants by email and on social media that early-decision offers would be posted online around 7 p.m. EST Wednesday. Under early decision, applicants commit to attend the university if they are admitted.

A Brown spokesperson said the university understood the fear and anxiety that newly admitted students may be feeling and would work with any having second thoughts.

“For any admitted student who reaches out with concerns about moving forward with matriculation, we’ll work with them individually and personally to determine the right solution,” university spokesperson Brian E. Clark said.

The manhunt for the Brown University mass shooter is now in its fifth day, and investigators are turning to the public for assistance.

While some students have talked about potentially pulling applications, those who are genuinely focused on Brown are unlikely to be deterred, said Allen Koh, chief executive officer of Cardinal Education, a California-based college admissions consulting company.

“Unfortunately, shootings have become a sad reality for young people today, and no school is completely immune, regardless of how elite or well-resourced it may be,” Koh said. “At the same time, the probability of such incidents remains very low, and people still need to live their lives.”

Applying early decision typically improves a student’s chances of winning admission at selective schools. Elite schools like Brown rely on early decision applications to drive tuition and revenue and fill about half the seats in their freshman class, said Daniel Lee, co-founder of Solomon Admissions Consulting.

On message boards and in conversations with college advisers, many students expressed shock and concern about the attack but said the shooting did not change their desire to attend Brown. The university’s daily newspaper, The Brown Daily Herald, quoted applicants who expressed a feeling that gun violence was a reality and “this could happen anywhere.”

In a message to applicants on Monday, the university apologized for the delay in early decision notifications. “We are faced with the reality of mourning the loss of members of our community taken from us from a terrible act of violence, even as we acknowledge that we’re on the eve of a very important day for our many talented applicants to Brown,” the message said. “(We) appreciate your patience and understanding as we grieve, heal, and begin to move forward together.”

  • ‘Buck Rogers’ star Gil Gerard dies at 82

Gil Gerard, who played television’s hunky sci-fi hero William “Buck” Rogers soon after the Star Wars franchise took hold in the late 1970s, has died. He was 82.

Gerard died Tuesday in hospice as a result of a rare, aggressive form of cancer, said his manager, Tina Presley Borek. His wife, Janet Gerard, posted a posthumous Facebook message he left behind for fans that read in part:

“Don’t waste your time on anything that doesn’t thrill you or bring you love. See you out somewhere in the cosmos.”

Gerard starred in NBC’s campy “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century,” which ran for two seasons from 1979 to 1981. A theatrical film based on the series also delighted youngsters and their parents alike. It was Rogers’ second turn on TV after a show in the 1950s, a radio series and a 1939 film serial.

The story was based on Philip Francis Nowlan’s serialized 1928 pulp novella “Armageddon 2419 A.D.” Nowlan’s character was named Anthony Rogers. The name was changed when the story began running in newspapers as a comic strip.

“My life has been an amazing journey,” Gerard wrote in his social media post. “The opportunities I’ve had, the people I’ve met and the love I have given and received have made my 82 years on the planet deeply satisfying.”

As the TV story goes, Rogers was a 20th century NASA pilot who was placed in frozen animation when his ship was hit by a meteor storm. He pops awake 500 years later in the year 2491. He gazes upon a futuristic, domed Earth with all its threats, including aliens, space pilots and the evil Draconians.

He had helpers: The robot sidekick Twiki and a beautiful space pilot Wilma Deering, played by Erin Gray.

A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Gerard worked steadily in TV commercials. He was featured in a number of other TV shows and movies, including starring roles in the 1982 TV movie “Hear No Evil” as Dragon and the short-lived “Sidekicks” in 1986.

In 1992, he hosted the reality series “Code 3,” following firefighters responding to emergency calls around the U.S. There were many guest appearances in the 1990s, including on “Days of Our Lives.”

Gerard and Gray were together again in 2007 for the TV film “Nuclear Hurricane.” They also returned to the Buck Rogers universe as Rogers’ parents in the pilot episode of James Cawley’s “Buck Rogers Begins” internet video series in 2009.

Gerard spoke openly about addictions to drugs, alcohol and compulsive overeating. He was the subject of a one-hour documentary, “Action Hero Makeover,” in 2007 after his weight ballooned to 350 pounds.

Done by Adrienne Crow, then a longtime companion, for the Discovery Health Channel, the film documented his progress after gastric bypass surgery.

Gerard was married and divorced four times before Janet. He had a son, actor Gilbert Vincent Gerard, with model and actor Connie Sellecca. Their divorce included a bitter custody battle for “Gib,” who was born in 1981. Sellecca was granted main custody.

“My journey has taken me from Arkansas to New York to Los Angeles, and finally, to my home in North Georgia with my amazing wife, Janet, of 18 years,” Gerard wrote in the post put on Facebook after his death.

“It’s been a great ride, but inevitably one that comes to a close as mine has.”

  • Timothy Loehmann, Police Officer Who Killed Tamir Rice, Joins Force in West Virginia – Cleveland Scene

Timothy Loehmann, the former Cleveland police officer who shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice more than a decade ago, is now working for two departments in rural West Virginia, as first reported by Dragline.

Earlier this year, Loehmann, 37, was hired by the Snowshoe Resort Community District and the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office as a patrolman, a roster sheet for the department shows.

The hiring marks the latest stop in Loehmann’s often fruitless attempts to get another cop job since November 2014, when the then 22-year-old shot Rice at Cuddell Commons two seconds after hopping out of his cruiser.

Fired from CPD for lying on his application, Loehmann tried his luck elsewhere— Akron, Euclid, Parma Heights, even the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department, where he failed the written exam.

He then looked outside Ohio. In October 2018, Loehmann held a part-time patrol job at the Village of Bellaire Police Department, then resigned days after news of his hiring surfaced. Similar episodes happened at the Tioga Borough Police Department in Tioga, Pennsylvania, and at the White Sulphur Springs Police Department in West Virginia, both places Loehmann left after public scrutiny.

Samaria Rice, Tamir’s mom and head of the Tamir Rice Foundation, told the ACLU’s Dragline she believes Loehmann should never work in law enforcement again.

“It goes back to a broken system and broken officers, corrupt officers being promoted to higher positions or being hired to protect and serve the community that they have failed over and over again,” Rice said. “These communities should be scared for their lives.”

Subodh Chandra, Rice’s attorney, added: “Timothy Loehmann has no business being entrusted with a badge and a gun. And those who were imbecilic and heartless enough to hire him should be stripped of their jobs, just as has happened in other communities. The Rice family hopes people will rise up and protest, just as they did in other towns where Loehmann was entrusted with a weapon again. And anyone with decency and safety concern should boycott the Snowshoe Resort until it talks some sense into the District.”

  • Explosive volcano eruption in Pacific Ring of Fire forces evacuations and grounds flights

Chaos erupted in Indonesia on Wednesday as Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, one of the country’s most active volcanoes, blasted lava and ash into the sky.

The first eruption struck at 1:35am local time, sending ash and lava six miles high, followed less than nine hours later by a second blast that produced a towering mushroom-shaped cloud nearly five miles tall.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is one of more than 450 volcanoes along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 25,000-mile horseshoe-shaped zone of intense seismic and volcanic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean.

Officials raised the volcano’s alert level to the highest late Tuesday after detecting deep quakes that often precede explosive eruptions.

Geological Agency boss Muhammad Wafid said there had been a ‘significant rise in the volcano’s activities.’

‘People living near the volcano should be aware of the potential volcanic mudflow if heavy rain occurs,’ he added.

Residents within about four miles of the volcano have been urged to evacuate, Avelina Manggota Hallan of the local disaster mitigation agency said.

Flights in the region have been suspended as authorities monitor the ash plume for further disruption.

This is a developing story… More updates to come.

Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki has erupted twice since early Wednesday morning, forcing evacuations in nearby villages

Operations at Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport (MOF) in Maumere, about 37 miles west of the volcano, are suspended until at least October 16, impacting domestic flights in the region.

As of now, no closures or widespread flight delays have been reported at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) or Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS).

The ash from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki’s eruption has not yet drifted significantly toward these major hubs, more than 620 miles away, leaving the airspace open.

However, airlines are closely monitoring the situation, as an eastward shift of the ash could still disrupt flights to and from Bali or Jakarta.

The volcano’s previous eruption, in July, caused 24 Bali cancellations when ash spread farther, so situations can evolve quickly.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, standing at 5,197 feet, forms part of the Lewotobi twin volcanoes, alongside Lewotobi Perempuan.

The volcano is situated within the Sunda Volcanic Arc, a segment of the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ known for its frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Geographically, the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire stretches from Russia and Japan in the west to the western coast of the US, and down to Antarctica, where it includes Mount Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on Earth.

The region also features deep ocean trenches formed by tectonic subduction zones.

Because of this vast, interconnected system, a major eruption or earthquake in one part of the Ring of Fire can trigger alerts and concerns around the world.

Historically, Lewotobi Laki-Laki has experienced regular eruptions, with significant events recorded in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Notably, a 1932 to 33 eruption involved lava dome formation and pyroclastic flows.

More recently, the volcano has been increasingly active, with eruptions in 2023, 2024, and 2025, leading to evacuations and flight disruptions.

Judge dismisses parts of lawsuit against UNC by former provost

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WTVD) — A judge in Hillsborough has dismissed parts of a lawsuit by a former UNC provost against the university.

Chris Clemens left his position in May after he says the university asked for his resignation.

He went on to sue the university for violating open meetings rules.

He has accused the trustees of conducting improper business in closed sessions and even used the Signal messaging app to hide records.

The superior judge has thrown out 2 of his 3 claims including the accusation they destroyed public records.
