Born in the Republic of Venice in 1254, Marco Polo was a trader, traveler, and adventurer who (probably) journeyed to Central Asia and China in an era when vast swaths of the world were unknown to Europeans. When he returned from his adventures, he brought back stories that introduced the customs and cultures of Asia to his countrymen.
In his influential work, The Travels of Marco Polo, the explorer outlined the geography of Asia, described the traditions of the people, and told tales of life at the court of Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. But as amazing as all that may sound, it only scratches the surface of the bizarre and exciting life of the traveling merchant. Here are 15 things you might not know about Marco Polo.
Marco Polo wasn’t yet a seasoned traveling merchant when he embarked on his great journey east. In fact, he was just 17 years old. In 1271, Polo left home with his father Niccolo and his uncle Maffeo and set out for Asia, hoping to reach the court of Kublai Khan. It was likely the first time the young Polo had left home as well as the first time he’d met his father and uncle, who had been traveling the world since Marco’s birth.
While The Travels of Marco Polo brought knowledge of the Far East to Europe, Marco Polo wasn’t actually the first European to visit China. In fact, he wasn’t even the first Polo to visit China. Before Marco embarked on his journey to Asia, Niccolo and Maffeo Polo had already traveled to China and met with Kublai Khan.
In some ways, Marco’s journey was a bit of a sequel to Niccolo and Maffeo’s original adventures: The two older travelers had befriended the great Mongol emperor and told him about Christianity, the pope, and the church in Rome. Curious about Western religion, Kublai Khan apparently requested that the travelers bring him 100 Christian men from whom to learn more about the religion, as well as some holy oil of the lamp in Jerusalem. Niccolo and Maffeo returned to Europe where they picked up the young Marco Polo and somehow procured the oil, but not the 100 Christians, before journeying east again.

After he left home at 17, Marco Polo didn’t return to Venice for 24 years. Over the course of two decades, he traveled roughly 15,000 miles on land along the Silk Road and by sea, traversing parts of Asia. If some highly controversial (and possibly forged) maps are to be believed, Polo also visited parts of the Alaskan coast hundreds of years before the Russian expedition led by the Danish explorer Vitus Bering.
When Marco Polo returned to Europe in 1295, his adventures were far from over. He found Venice at war against the Republic of Genoa, and took up arms on behalf of his homeland. After a skirmish at sea, Polo was captured by the Genoese forces and tossed in jail. There, he befriended another prisoner, Rustichello of Pisa, who just happened to be a writer of popular romances. He began dictating his story to Rustichello, who produced the manuscript that would become The Travels of Marco Polo.
The Mongol Empire was circulating paper money long before European nations began printing their own bills. Polo described the strange currency in his book, facetiously describing Kublai Khan as an alchemist who could transform mulberry trees into money instead of base metals into gold. He was fascinated by the way paper money was treated by the emperor’s subjects as though it were as valuable as gold or silver—and described the systems in place to prevent counterfeiting.

Marco Polo encountered numerous animals on his journey that were then unknown in Europe, such as the chow chow dog breed, the musk deer, and the yak. Of these, the yak seemed to be Polo’s favorite: Amazed by the silky softness of their fur, he brought yak hair to Venice with him, where he displayed it as a curiosity.
Many believe, erroneously, that Marco Polo introduced pasta to Italy. Noodles were already big in Europe by that time, but Polo did encounter some interesting foods while in Asia. During his travels, he found endless quantities of rare spices costing virtually nothing, such as ginger, which had been widely used in the Roman era but had become rare in the intervening centuries. And while he may not have brought ice cream to Europe either, as some sources suggest, Polo does describe an early milkshake. The Mongols reportedly dried milk and then filled their flasks with the powder to take on their travels on horseback. While riding, they added water to the milk, and the motion caused the concoction to thicken into a syrup.

In the 13th century, European folklore described unicorns as horned, horse-like animals who could tamed and captured only with the help of a young maiden. Marco Polo’s account of the animal debunked that superstition: unicorns weren’t serene and beautiful creatures who gravitated to the pure of heart. They were ugly and dangerous, with hair like a buffalo, feet like an elephant, the head of a wild boar, and a black horn in the middle of their foreheads. Unicorns, Polo informed his readers, liked to roll around in the mud and dirt, and attack people with their prickly tongues. Modern historians claim he was actually describing rhinoceroses.
Throughout his book, Polo describes encounters with magicians and sorcerers. At the court of Kublai Khan, Polo met astrologers who (allegedly) could control the weather from the palace rooftops, and magicians who made flagons of wine levitate at feasts.
If Marco Polo sounds a little bit superstitious, it’s likely because he lived in superstitious times. Throughout his book, he not only recounts first-hand experiences with magic, but repeats the myths and rumors he encounters as fact. Polo claims it’s well known that evil spirits haunt the Gobi Desert, torturing travelers with illusions, and calling their names to turn them away from their path and make them lose their way—which is probably a reference to the very real phenomenon of the Gobi’s “singing” sands.
In his book, Polo said he not only made it to the court of Kublai Khan in Shangdu—traveling farther than almost any European had in the process—but also befriended the emperor, becoming his right hand man and advisor.

When Marco Polo finally decided it was time to end his adventures and return home, Kublai Khan had grown so attached to the Venetian merchant that he denied his request. Polo finally convinced Kublai Khan to let him go in return for helping the emperor’s great nephew on a sea voyage. In order to ensure Polo was safe on his travels, the emperor awarded him a golden tablet of safe conduct—an inscribed gold plaque—which would help him obtain supplies on their journey and let everyone know he was under the emperor’s protection.
While Marco Polo and his ghostwriter Rustichello of Pisa were undoubtedly great storytellers, historians continue to debate exactly how true some of their stories were. Some historians have gone as far as to question whether Polo even made it to China, arguing he may have simply picked up stories from other merchants during his travels. While Polo’s historical significance isn’t up for debate, it’s unclear which of his tales stretched the truth.
After providing some of the first written descriptions of yaks, musk deer, and of course, unicorns, it seems fitting that Polo would eventually have an ungulate named after him. In 1841, zoologist Edward Blyth named a subspecies of Central Asian wild sheep Ovis ammon polii after Marco Polo (the sheep are colloquially called Marco Polo sheep).
Marco Polo’s travels have inspired plenty of explorers to go on adventures of their own. Christopher Columbus brought a copy of Marco Polo’s book with him on his trips across the Atlantic Ocean. In the 1960s, a group of travelers even decided to follow Marco Polo’s exact route, journeying from Italy to China in cars and trailers instead of on horseback.

Seattle has had a long history of supporting National Night Out, an annual campaign that promotes police-community partnerships, bringing neighbors together in the name of safer and better places to live. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite communities.
“As block watch captains for our area, we were happy to have the opportunity to throw a party for the neighborhood and meet some of the local residents. It was great to have those conversations about making the community safer for everyone.”
Ann Pearce, Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology Seattle
In keeping with the purpose of the evening and to help spread the message of the rewards of living an honest life, volunteers handed out copies of The Way to Happiness, a nonreligious moral code written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard and based entirely upon common sense.
The theme of the evening was a precept from this booklet that undercuts crime: “Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you.”
The Church sponsors The Way to Happiness campaign to uplift neighborhoods in the Seattle community. The booklet provides a guideline to living a life based on self-respect and personal integrity—traditional values that go a long way to reducing crime.
The block party featured a live band, a unique 1924 Model T Ford truck where the barbecue was staged, a balloon artist and visits from city personnel and the Seattle Police Department.
And the highlight of the evening, at least for the under 12 crowd, was the arrival of a fire engine from Seattle’s Fire Department Station 8. Youngsters received badges from the firefighters and it wasn’t only the kids who clambered up onto the seats of the bright red fire truck.
To complement the message of The Way to Happiness, volunteers from another humanitarian campaign supported by the Church of Scientology were also on hand—the Seattle chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World.
Drugs and crime are inextricably interrelated in today’s society. And the Drug-Free World materials present the unvarnished facts about commonly abused drugs in a youth-friendly format to help young people make the self-determined decision not to abuse drugs.
“As block watch captains for our area, we were happy to have the opportunity to throw a party for the neighborhood and meet some of the local residents,” said Ann Pearce, public affairs director of the Church. “It was great to have those conversations about making the community safer for everyone.”
The Church of Scientology and its members proudly share the tools for happier living contained inThe Way to Happiness. Over 4 million copies have been distributed in the last year alone.

SearchQuarry.com Now Offering Intuitive Free VIN Decoder Feature
United States-based public records resource utility allows users to search Vehicle Identification Numbers database without going to DMV.
San Diego, California, August 11, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– SearchQuarry (SearchQuarry.com), a U.S.-based public records resource utility created to help locate public records information online, now offers an intuitive free VIN Decoder feature. Located at https://www.searchquarry.com/vin_records/, the search platform allows users to look through the Vehicle Identification Numbers database to gather data related to vehicle year, make, model and body style – all without the hassles of having to make a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Vehicle Identification Numbers were standardized in 1954 for all road-going vehicles, with model years 1981 and newer having a VIN made up of 17 characters (letters and numerals) and the format varying among vehicles prior to that. The VIN provides data with regard to a vehicle’s background, including the manufacturer, model year and where it was built – put succinctly, the VIN records the vehicle’s identity.
The best car safety device is a rear-view mirror with a cop in it.
Dudley Moore, Comedian / Actor
“We often tell folks, when they call us and ask for detailed information, to think of the Vehicle Identification Number as a car or truck’s DNA,” states a SearchQuarry company spokesperson. “This unique combination of 17 letters and numbers assigned to the vehicle when it is built stays with it throughout its life, even used to track the vehicle as it changes hands and as it is repaired and serviced. If the vehicle is severely damaged and assigned a ‘salvage title,’ this information should appear when the VIN is used to generate a vehicle history report, such as those offered byAutoCheck, Carfaxand the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System.
“ThroughSearchQuarry’sfree VIN Decoder feature, it is possible to determine the year, make and model by deciphering the placement of the letters and numbers in the VIN, as well as to check for recalls. As a public records resource utility operating in the U.S., our search platform consists of a paid member’s area along with several free tools – such as the VIN Decoder – which were created to assist in locating public records information online.”
While many competitor search systems require customers pay extra for additional searches, SearchQuarry.com allows users to conduct as many searches as they wish.

The thread that connects President Obama to Kenya and Airlift America is threaded to a home called the “Safari House” in Memphis located in an Area that is called “Orange Mound.” Orange Mound is the 1st neighborhood built by former slaves. Orange Mound was formerly the John George Deaderick Plantation.
Memphis, Tennessee, August 10, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– 1st Lady Michelle Obama electrified the audience at the Democratic National Convention when she was quoted as saying “I wake up every morning in a house built by slaves.” Anthony “Amp” Elmore a 5 time world Karate Kickboxing champion, a 45 year practicing Nichiren Buddhist threads a story that connects the 3000 year old religion of Buddhism, slavery, Dr. Martin Luther King, President Barack Obama, Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta and White Jewish Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen.
Elmore is hosting a celebration at his home “The Safari House” Saturday August 13, 2016 titled “Mboya’s 60th.” On August 15, 1956 an African by the name of Tom Mboya from then “British East Africa” made causes that would influence the world. Elmore coined the phrase “without a Mboya there would be no Obama.” President Obama election as the 1st Black President in America is significant, and while his approval ratings have skyrocketed Anthony “Amp” Elmore is working to tell the not well known Mboya story of the Obama legacy. Elmore wrote a letter to both President Obama and Secretary of Education John King to note that the Obama legacy started with Kenya’s Tom Mboya who came to America on August 15, 1956.
“Africa and its people helped to shape American and allowed it to become the great nation that it is”
Barack Obama Jr. , President of the United States of America
Tom Mboya was a 26 year old trade union member who wrote a pamphlet titled; “The Kenya question.” The civil rights organization”A COA or “American Committee on Africa” founded by gay African/American civil rights pioneer and activist Bayard Rustin the brainchild of peaceful protest in America and George Houser a liberal White minister who helped found the 1940’s civil rights organization called “C.O.R.E.” or “Congress of Racial Equality.” The diverse vision of “ACOA” that was founded in 1953 manifested itself as the 21 Century “Obama Coalition.”
The Manifestation of Barack Obama Jr. emerged from efforts of “Tom Mboya.” Mboya came to America in 1956 to speak at colleges. Mboya held a vision of an Africa absent of Colonial rule. Mboya understood that if Africa was to be independent Africans must be educated. Mboya asked college Presidents to provide scholarships for African students. Mboya also solicited others for sponsorships for airfare and expenses.
Singer Harry Belafonte, Baseball great Jackie Robinson, and actor Sydney Pointier lent their names on a letter asking Americans for donations to pay for a chartered plane from British East Africa to America. The plan was called “Airlift America.” The 1st plane arrived in New York September of 1959. The Airlift America culture lead to a 23 year old African from British East Africa by the name of Barack Obama who arrived to go to school in Hawaii in 1959.
On June 26, 1960 Mboya met with Democratic nominee Senator John F. Kennedy. Mboya convinced Kennedy to sponsor charter airplane for African Students for the September 1960 school year. This event lead Kennedy in October of 1960 to including helping African students and training African leaders part of his 1960 Presidential platform. Kennedy used the picture of he and Mboya as a marketing strategy to the African/American voter who were traditionally Republican. Mboya’s influence helped to change the outcome of America’s 1960 election Blacks changing form Republican to Democrate.
Anthony “Amp” Elmore notes; On August 13, 2016 we will stand at an “African Styled Home” in an area that was was once a slave plantation. We will pick up the gauntlet where Dr. Martin Luther King fell in Memphis. Our historic celebration in Memphis picks up the gauntlet of Tom Mboya who fell in Nairobi, Kenya. Since the inception of Slavery in America and African nations gaining independence no African Country has offered African/Americans a “Formal State Reception.” The history of Tom Mboya in America lead not only to Kenya being a democratic nation, the relationship lead to America’s 1st Black President.
In July of 1990 Anthony “Amp” Elmore traveled from Orange Mound, Tennessee to Nairobi, Kenya. In 1995 Elmore married a Kenyan woman. While they are no longer married their son Anthony “Amp” Elmore like President Obama is 1/2 Kenyan. While President Obama is connected to Kenya in Washington D.C. we in Memphis are connected. We at the “Mboya 60th” will call for the country of Kenya to honor its “African American family” with a “Formal State Reception in July of 2019.
Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen Steve Cohen will attend the event. Congressman Cohen wrote a letter to the Kenya Embassy inviting both Kenya Ambassador Robinson Njeru Githae and Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta. Cohen a White Jewish Congressman in a majority Black supports Elmore’s efforts. Cohen in 2008 introduced and got legislation passed whereas America apologized for slavery.
From the area that was once a slave plantation we are asking the country of Kenya to honor it family who are citizens of America but family to Africa with a “Formal State Reception.” April 4, 2018 marks Dr. King’s 50th. We ask that Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta and retired President Barack Obama both come to Memphis for Dr. King’s 50th celebration. We in America will come to Kenya for Tom Mboya 50th where we are asking President Obama will be our keynote speaker.

Maria Soccor Productions Inc. and Simmons Media announce that Soccor’s award winning ‘Lords of BSV’ documentary about the breathtaking Brukup dancers in Brooklyn, New York is now available on Red Bull TV. Director Soccor and the film were also recently featured on WABC-TV in New York City. In September, ‘Lords of BSV’ will be presented by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka at Shaquille O’Neal’s CityPlex Theater in New Jersey
New York, NY, August 8, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– After winning nine major awards in 2015, and two awards at the London International Film Festival 2016, Maria Soccor’sLords of BSV made its digital television debut on July 31, 2016 on Red Bull TV and is now available on VOD (Video On Demand http://www.redbull.tv/film/AP-1NQTVU81H1W11/lords-of-bsv). Lords of BSV is the latest addition to the online media platform from the Austrian Red Bull company which broadcasts live global events, and an extensive selection of sports, music and lifestyle entertainment.
The Red Bull TV debut follows Soccor and Lords of BSV being featured for a second time on WABC-TV in New York City. Above and Beyond: Inspiring People In Our Community profiled the director in the program which aired June 25 and June 26, 2016. In 2015, one of the world’s most esteemed movie critics, 30 year veteran Sandy Kenyon of WABC-TV Eyewitness News, applauded the powerful message of Lords of BSV. He said, “These performers are dedicated to making their community a better place by sharing what they know with the youngsters of Bed-Stuy.” Referring to their Brukup dance, he added, “The style made its way to Brooklyn in the 1990s, and now the veterans have revived it to keep kids away from gangs and heal their own pain.”
“An example of the finest in documentary filmmaking today.”
Tom Neff, Founder of the Documentary Channel
Lords of BSV tells the inspiring story of the breathtaking Brukup dancers in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of New York City. As the film is viewed across the world on Red Bull TV, Newark Mayor RasBaraka has chosen the celebrated documentary to be showcased at a special celebration in September 2016 at the Newark CityPlexTheatre owned by NBA Hall of FamerShaquilleO’Neal.
Soccor is especially honored to be recognized in her hometown: Newark, New Jersey. Earlier this year, Lords of BSV continued its international winning streak by taking home two awards at the London International Film Festival 2016 (London IFF 2016) on February 26, 2016. The film was honored with the Jury Award for Best Documentary, and Best Cinematography In A Documentary Feature. The awards continued the tremendous acclaim Lords of BSV received in Europe as well as in America. In 2015, the film was named Best Feature Documentary at the Milan International Film Festival 2015, plus Soccor won Best Director of a Feature Documentary, and Lords of BSV was recognized for Best Music in a Feature Film, at the Madrid International Film Festival 2015. The film added to its list of honors by winning Best Documentary at the I Filmmaker International Film Festival in Marbella, Spain on December 8, 2015.
The international honors for the documentary directorial debut by actress/director/producer/comic creator Soccor followed five honors at American film festivals. In the United States, Lords of BSV was chosen Best Documentary at the 2015 Visionfest Film Festival in New York City and the Rahway International Film Festival 2015, received the Audience Award for Best Feature Documentary at the Hudson Valley International Film Festival 2015, and won the Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Long Island Film International Expo 2015. Also, Soccor received the Emerging Director Award at the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival 2015.
The founder of the Documentary Channel, acclaimed Emmy Award winner and Academy Award nominated director/producer Tom Neff, calls Lords of BSV, “an example of the finest in documentary filmmaking today.” “It is a perfect marriage of in-depth content with a unique approach to form,” says Neff. “Maria Soccor followed her heart to create a unique vision of a unique art form while simultaneously developing a strong underlying theme of dance and art as a way out for inner city youth. Soccor’s documentary is a definitive refutation to the stereotype of the inner city youth as violent and uncaring; these young artists are focused, involved, and determined to make a difference.” Neff continues, “Lords of BSV is extremely visual and engaging, impeccably researched and presented, and inspiring to the audience.”
“As a first time director, I am humbled that Lords of BSV has received national and international recognition,” says Soccor, who produced the short film, Play House, which was screened at the 2013 South by Southwest Festival (SXSW). While Lords of BSV continues to gain accolades, Soccor’s short comedy Cinecoma, which she produced, has been picked up for distribution by Just the Story TV. Also, her new comic series SPEAR, illustrated by artist RoloLedesma, launched at the 2015 New York Comic Con in Manhattan.
As an actress, Soccor has appeared in over 20 movies, including Playmakers of New Orleans starring Zoe Saldana, in which she portrayed Tracey Austin, Saldana’s sister. Her television credits include NCIS New Orleans on CBS, Another World on NBC, and K-Ville on Fox starring Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser. Soccor is also a trained dancer, and she was inspired to document the stars of Lords of BSV after witnessing their unique talents. “It is the most fabulous urban artistry I’ve ever seen,” Soccor says. “They are the most dynamic dancers in New York City.”
Soccor’s goal in creating Lords of BSV was to erase the negative stigma and stereotypes about urban dancers.
“Dance gives them dignity, a sense of identity, and keeps them from lives of crime,” she states. “There is tragedy throughout the entire film, yet the dance lifts them above the negativity surrounding them. Through dance, they find love for each other, and survive.” She adds that the art form has tremendous positive social significance. “Brukup is not just a dance, it is a culture,” she comments. “Through the art, the dancers overcome poverty and homelessness, becoming better people. BSV serves the community by keeping kids off the streets and showing them how to turn anger into the art of dance. Their dancing saves lives.”
BSV provides a positive alternative to the negative spiral of street life, despite the lack of funding or facilities. “I want to show the world what they do, teaching students without classrooms, without schools.” says Soccor. “My dream is that one day they will have a school to truly nurture and spread their gift.”
About Lords of BSV and Brukup:
Created in 1998, the Bed-Stuy Veterans (BSV) became kings of the Brooklyn underground dance culture. They are revivalists of a dance style known as Brukup, which originated in Jamaica, West Indies in the early 1990s from George “Brukup” Adams. Brukup is a hybrid dance chronicled in the New York Times that incorporates bone breaking, connecting, pausing, popping, mutation, morphing, ballet and hip-hop, mixed with theatrical miming.
SJ Works is a new path to employment for those in south jersey who are unemployed and looking to network and volunteer their time.
Press Release –
Aug 8, 2016
Sewell, NJ, August 8, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– Thanks to a generous grant from New Jersey Community Capital (NJCC), the Volunteer Center of South Jersey is ready to embark on a new program this fall. Designed to help people realize the benefits of volunteering, networking and keeping a healthy level of productivity during times of unemployment, SJ Works is the only program of its kind in southern New Jersey.
“We realized that South Jersey residents are still struggling to find work and our organization wanted to find a way to help with this pressing issue,” reported VCSJ President Cody Miller. “That’s how the program was born. We touch so many lives, and as an organization that is connected to many non-profits and resources, what better way to improve our community than by helping people to gain employment while volunteering?”
SJ works allows people to give back to their community while connecting them with a non-profit organization. This provides networking opportunities, which can lead to an increased likelihood of finding employment. Participants in the program will have access to program staff, services, and resources through in person training and one-on-one consultation, web interface, e-mail, and telephone support. A cornerstone of the program is a five part workshop series. The scope of the series covers finances, employability, healthy lifestyle, volunteering and networking. Local experts have been invited to speak and detailed information will be released prior to the start of the series.
“New Jersey Community Capital is thrilled to support such an essential program for South Jersey,” said Wayne T. Meyer, President of NJCC. In a study commissioned by the Center for National and Community Service, it was discovered that people who volunteer during times of unemployment have 27% higher odds of achieving new jobs. The data is there, and that’s why the NJCC believed in the viability of the program.
“SJ Works gets participants out of the house, networking and honing their skills,” said Executive Director Michele Epifani. “Times of unemployment can be a low in someone’s life. So, why not engage in something that makes you feel good and possibly lead to a new career?”
The Volunteer Center is interested in any corporate or business sponsors who would like to participate or offer financial assistance as well. It could be a great opportunity to match prospective employees with current or future hiring needs. The program will offer workshops that deal with healthy living and lifestyle, financial planning and management, resume and cover letter building, tools of the trade for applying for jobs, how to network, Volunteering 101 and much more. Space is limited. To register, please visit http://bit.ly/sjworks and/or email mepifani@sjvolunteers.org.
The Volunteer Center of South Jersey (VCSJ) was established as a private, independent 501c3 non-profit organization in 1996. VCSJ is a volunteer action center (VAC) in South Jersey, covering seven counties from Burlington to Cape May, whose mission is to change lives, empower families, and improve our community through volunteerism and the support of local non-profit organizations. The center offers best practices in civic engagement through education (workshops, publications, webinars, etc.) for volunteers (individual and groups) and organizations (business and non-profit). NJCC is a nonprofit community development financial institution (CDFI) that transforms at-risk communities through strategic investments of capital and knowledge. NJCC invests in affordable housing, community facilities, and economic development ventures that strengthen neighborhoods, improve education, and increase jobs, ultimately providing greater opportunities for low-income populations. Since inception, NJCC has facilitated the investment of over $500 million into 800 high-impact projects across the state, supporting the creation and preservation of 12,900 education seats, 8,200 housing units, 6,100 early care slots, and 6,100 jobs. Clearwater, Florida, August 7, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– A diverse team of volunteers joined the cleanup of a stretch of the Pinellas Trail, organized by the Clearwater Police Department.
Participating were members of The Way to Happiness Association of Tampa Bay, North Greenwood residents, volunteers from the Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources Department’s Auxiliary Ranger Program, students from the Washburn Academy and local Scientologists.
The Pinellas Trail is a protected greenspace for walking, jogging, skating and biking, extending 47 miles along an abandoned railroad line from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. It is managed by the Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources Department.
The volunteers tackled a section of the trail that runs through North Greenwood, a Clearwater municipal zone of more than 7,000 residents.
Known as a cultural hub decades ago, in recent years North Greenwood declined and became known as a high-crime, low-income neighborhood. When the crime rate peaked in July 2015, local residents banded together to upgrade the area with various projects to improve the facilities and environment of the neighborhood.
One of the projects undertaken was frequent cleanups, a function listed by the National Crime Prevention Council as one of the 20 communities initiatives than can reduce crime.
Clearwater Police Sergeant Wilton Lee directed the operation Saturday, July 30. He thanked each volunteer for their participation in this important project.
City Councilman Bill Jonson, who joined in the cleanup, said he hopes the work of the volunteers will set an example and influence others to treat the neighborhood with pride.
Since initiating cleanups and other projects to upgrade the North Greenwood neighborhood, crime has dropped 56 percent, according to a recent Pinellas County report.
There’s something ghoulishly fascinating about a mysterious disappearance, and our vast oceans offer seemingly endless space in which to vanish. The true fate of many of these ships will never be known, but speculation suggests that storms, piracy, mutiny, accidental bombing, and even the attack of a giant squid could be responsible for their disappearances. Below are seven ships that have vanished without leaving a trace.
Theodosia Burr Alston (1783–1813) was the daughter of American politician and third vice president of the United States Aaron Burr. Theodosia had a privileged upbringing and a good education, and in 1801, she married wealthy landowner Joseph Alston, who went on to become governor of South Carolina.
Sadly, in 1812, Theodosia lost her only son to a fever and she became sick with grief. Desperate for a change of scene, she boarded the schooner Patriot in South Carolina to visit her father in New York on New Year’s Eve 1812. The ship left dock and sailed north—but what happened after that is a mystery. It never arrived in New York, and no trace of the ship or crew was ever found.
A number of theories and legends have sprung up around the fate of Theodosia—some claim the ship was attacked by pirates and that she was forced to walk the plank, while others suggest that the Patriot got caught up in the War of 1812 and was sunk accidentally by an enemy ship. Perhaps most fanciful of all is the story put forward by a Karankawa chief, who claimed that he rescued a woman who had washed up on shore after a shipwreck, and that before she died she gifted him her locket—with the name Theodosia inscribed upon it. Whatever the story, it’s likely that after more than 200 years we shall never know the real fate of the Patriot and Theodosia Burr Alston.
The Merchant Royal was tasked with taking treasures from the New World to Spain under the command of Captain John Limbrey. In 1641, the ship was loaded with 100,000 pounds of gold, 400 bars of Mexican silver, and a huge amount of precious jewels. As the ship entered English waters, the weather turned bad; unfortunately the pumps on board the ship broke and it began to take on water. The Merchant Royal had been sailing in tandem with its sister ship the Dover Merchant, which came to the rescue of the captain and crew. The cargo, however, could not be saved, and the ship disappeared beneath the waves, somewhere off the coast of Land’s End.
Of course, with such valuable cargo, countless people have attempted to find the wreck, which has become known as the “Eldorado of the seas.” In 2007, it was thought that Odyssey Marine Exploration may have found the Merchant Royal wreck after it salvaged 500,000 pieces of gold and silver from a site off the southwestern tip of Great Britain, but it was later identified as treasure from a Spanish vessel. In 2019, fisherman pulled up what may be the ship’s anchor, but so far, the unimagined riches of the Merchant Royal still await discovery.
The USS Cyclops was a huge steel-hulled fuel ship, tasked with carrying coal and other useful supplies for the U.S. Navy in the 1910s. On its final journey, the Cyclops set sail from Rio de Janeiro with a full load of 10,800 tons of manganese ore and over 300 people on board.
On March 4, 1918 the ship was spotted for the last time as it left Barbados and sailed into what we now sometimes call the Bermuda Triangle. The ship seemingly disappeared without a trace, and the case has been seen as especially mysterious since no distress call was made and no bad weather was reported in the region. Theories began to surface (some more imaginative than others) that the ship had been sunk by the Germans, attacked by a giant squid or octopus, or been victim of a violent mutiny. A huge search for the Cyclops was launched with a number of boats and planes scouring the area for debris or survivors, but nothing of the enormous ship was ever seen again.
On December 22, 1967, experienced yachtsman Dan Burack and his friend, Father Patrick Horgan, set sail in the 23-foot luxury yacht Witchcraftto see the holiday lights off the coast of Miami. Unfortunately, after just one mile, the pair experienced difficulty when it seemed as if the yacht had hit something.
Burack calmly called the Miami Coast Guard to report the trouble and request assistance. The official who took the call later commented that Burack seemed unconcerned—perhaps because the yacht was fitted with a special flotation device that was supposed to make the vessel unsinkable. The Coast Guard arrived at the scene just 19 minutes after the call, and were surprised to find no trace of the large yacht, no debris, and no sign of Burack or Horgan. Over the next six days, hundreds of square miles of ocean were searched, but nothing was ever found, and the Witchcraft has been chalked up as another vessel mysteriously lost to the Bermuda Triangle.
TheAndrea Gail was a 72-foot-long-liner boat that fished in the North Atlantic for swordfish. In September 1991, the ship, along with several other fishing vessels, set sail from Gloucester, Massachusetts, for the last fishing session of the season. By October, the Andrea Gail and its six-man crew was out off the coast of Newfoundland when the confluence of terrible weather fronts conspired to create what has been dubbed “the perfect storm.” Powerful winds whipped up waves as high as 100 feet, and any ship caught in their path faced being sucked into the wave and flipped over repeatedly.
The devastating storm battered the coast of New England and Canada, and after the worst of it had passed and the Andrea Gail had failed to return to port, a number of rescue missions set out to find the ship—but nothing was ever found. The story of the storm and the imagined fate of the Andrea Gail and her crew was later told in the book The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger, as well as a Hollywood movie of the same name.
USS Porpoise was a brig involved in 19th century exploration and surveying missions, taking part in a voyage in 1838 that confirmed the existence of Antarctica and later circumnavigating the globe. In 1854 the ship set sail from Hong Kong carrying 69 men in order to carry out a survey of the South Sea Islands. Somewhere between China and Taiwan, the ship sailed into dense fog and was separated from its partner ship, the USS Vincennes, and never seen again. Many ships searched for the ill-fated brig for over a year, but no sign of it was ever found. It’s thought to have been wrecked in a typhoon with all hands lost.
Over the course of its 20-year career, the British Navy ship HMS Sappho was used to suppress the slave trade off the coast of West Africa. It intercepted a number of ships loaded with slaves and freed hundreds of people.
In 1857, after wrongly chasing down and boarding an American ship—an event that caused something of a diplomatic crisis between America and Great Britain—the ship was ordered to set sail to Australia. The Sappho reached Cape Town without incident, and from there headed toward the Bass Strait, where it was last spotted by a passing brig on February 18, 1878. Bad weather was reported in the area, and it has been assumed that high winds caused the ship to founder and sink. No sign of the 147 crewmembers was ever found, but rumors abounded that the captain, Fairfax Moresby, had somehow escaped the wreck and made it to an island off Australia, where he was said to have lost his mind.
The SS Baychimo somewhere in Canada. / Mysterious Disappearances, Wikimedia Commons // Public Domain
The SS Baychimo started life as a German trading vessel before being given to Great Britain after World War I as part of reparations. The Baychimo came under the ownership of the Hudson Bay Company, and made many voyages across the Atlantic from Scotland to Canada to trade with local Inuit tribes. In 1931, while journeying to Vancouver with a cargo of furs, the Baychimo fell victim ice floes, which surrounded the ship and locked it in an icy embrace. The crew escaped the stricken vessel and fled across the ice floes to safety, but some returned a few days later to try to rescue the ship and its valuable cargo.
After over a month of braving the treacherous weather in a flimsy camp, a huge blizzard hit and the remaining crew lost sight of the ship—and by the time the storm cleared, the Baychimo had disappeared. The crew assumed it had sunk without trace.
But then, a week later, the ship was spotted by an Inuit hunter and the crew raced back on board to gather as much of the cargo as possible. The captain decided the ship was too badly damaged to be seaworthy and so abandoned it, thinking it would soon break apart.
How wrong he was: Over the years, the Baychimo was sighted a number of times, sometimes caught fast in ice, other times floating ghost-like through the Arctic waters. The last confirmed sighting was in 1969—an astonishing 37 years after it had been abandoned to its fate.
A version of this story ran in 2016; it has been updated for 2023.
Introducing Vertical Instant Lock Adhesive, the first and only adhesive designed specifically for vertical hardscape applications. This new adhesive works incredibly fast to lock hardscape materials in place – making slips and sags a thing of the past. It is also a great choice for fast and easy repair on a variety of surfaces.
Princeton, MN, August 4, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– Minnesota-based SRW Products, a national hardscape products and accessories supplier, has launched an innovative new adhesive technology, Vertical Instant Lock. This product is designed to securely affix stone and other hardscape materials to vertical surfaces in under five seconds.
Unlike other adhesives, this product works incredibly fast to lock hardscape materials to vertical surfaces – making slips and sags a thing of the past. For many projects, it can eliminate the need for bracing and allow the application to be done without mortar.
“This is a game changer for contractors and home owners because there are not any other adhesives available for vertical installations that can eliminate the need for mortar and bracing.”
David Orton, CEO, SRW Products
“We’re excited to bring this new adhesive to the hardscape market,” explains David Orton, CEO of SRW Products. “When it comes to vertical applications, Vertical Instant Lock Adhesive far outperforms polyurethane- and silicone-based adhesive products. It works faster than anything out there. This is a game changer for contractors and home owners because there are not any other adhesives available that are designed specifically for vertical installations.”
Now application of stone, block, brick, tile, metal, glass and wood can be completed quickly and easily, without the mess and hassle that are usually involved – saving valuable time. It is a great solution for projects such as outdoor kitchens, stone veneers and dry stack. Not only does it work well with stone, it can also be used for repairs and small projects using other materials. Examples include such projects as hanging metal numbers on a brick facade, installing towel bars on tile and many other applications.
“We’ve put Vertical Instant Lock Adhesive to the test – securing stone pavers as heavy as 25 pounds to a wall. Our customers who have seen this product in action have been quite impressed with how quickly a secure bond forms even with fairly heavy stone. It really does reduce the difficulty in working with hardscape materials on vertical surfaces,” states Orton.

Nonreligious in nature, this booklet is used by people of virtually every culture and creed and empowers individuals to help others and make a difference in their neighborhoods and beyond.
In each booklet they handed out, Seattle volunteers placed a flier that explained the purpose of this U.N. day. International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the U.N. General Assembly because “friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.”
In his Friendship Day statement, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “When greed supersedes concerns about the health of our planet or its inhabitants, when fanatic attachment to ideology is pursued at all costs, and when people suffer human rights violations because they are considered somehow less than equal, the heritage of humanity is betrayed and our future wellbeing is placed in peril…. On this International Day of Friendship, let us resolve to cherish and cultivate as many warm relationships as possible, enriching our own lives and enhancing the future.”
Over the past year, Washington State volunteers have distributed 10,000 copies of The Way to Happiness, placing them in the hands of individuals and giving booklets to hundreds of businesses for the use and benefit of their customers.
The Way to Happiness was written in 1981. Immensely popular since its first publication, the campaign has been embraced by more than 250,000 groups and individuals, with some 115 million copies distributed in 115 languages in 186 nations.
The Church of Scientology and its members are proud to share the tools for happier living contained in The Way to Happiness.
English has many words for the feelings that can arise when a good, hard look at the state of the world seems to reveal only negatives. Hopelessness, despair, depression, discouragement, melancholy, sorrow, worry, disconsolation, distress, anxiety … there are so many that it would hardly seem necessary to borrow any more from other languages. But English never hesitates to borrow words that would lose certain subtleties in translation, and angst, ennui, and weltschmerz have made their way into English by offering a little something extra. Have you got a case of one of these imported maladies? Here’s a guide to help you diagnose.
Angst is the word for fear in German, Dutch, and Danish. It comes from the same Indo-European root (meaning “tight, constricted, painful”) that gave us anguish, anxiety, and anger. In the mid-19th century, it became associated with a specific kind of existential dread through the work of the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. He talked about a type of anxiety that arises in response to nothing in particular, or the sense of nothingness itself. It’s not exactly fear, and not the same as worry, but a simple fact of the human condition, a feeling that disrupts peace and contentment for no definable reason.
The word was adopted into English after Sigmund Freud used it as a term for generalized anxiety. Now it carries shades of philosophical brooding mixed with a dash of psychoanalytic, clinical turmoil. While anxiety and angst are often interchangeable, anxiety foregrounds a feeling of suffering (also present in angst), while angst foregrounds dissatisfaction, a complaint about the way the world is.
Are you dissatisfied and worried in an introspective, overthinking German way? You’ve got angst.
Ennui is the French word for boredom. The English word annoy comes from an early, 13th century borrowing of the word, but it was borrowed again during the height of 18th century European Romanticism, when it stood for a particular, fashionable kind of boredom brought on by weariness with the world. Young people at that time, feeling that the promises of the French Revolution had gone unfulfilled, took on an attitude of lethargic disappointment, a preoccupation with the fundamental emptiness of existence. Nothing mattered, so nothing roused the passions.
By the middle of the 19th century, ennui became associated with the alienation of industrialization and modern life. Artists and poets suffered from it, and soon a claim to ennui was a mark of spiritual depth and sensitivity. It implied feelings of superiority and self-regard, the idea being that only bourgeois people too deluded or stupid to see the basic futility of any action could be happy. Now, in English, though it is defined as “a feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction,” ennui also has connotations of self-indulgent posturing and European decadence.
Are you tired, so tired of everything about the world and the way it is? Do you proclaim this, with a long, slow sigh, to everyone around you? You’ve got ennui.
Weltschmerz, German for “world pain,” was also coined during the Romantic era, and is in many ways the German version of ennui. It describes a world weariness felt from a perceived mismatch between the ideal image of how the world should be with how it really is.
In German philosophy, it was distinguished from pessimism, the idea that there is more bad than good in the world, because while pessimism was the logical conclusion of cool, rational philosophical pondering, weltschmerz was an emotional response. Though weltschmerz and ennui are pretty close synonyms, ennui foregrounds the listlessness brought on by world weariness (it can also be a term for more simple boredom), and weltschmerz foregrounds the pain or sadness. There is perhaps a greater sense of yearning in weltschmerz (part of the pain is that the sufferer really wants the world to be otherwise). Also, as an English word, weltschmerz isn’t as common as ennui, so there are fewer connotations about the type of person that comes down with it. Its very German sound (that “schm”!) makes it seem more serious and grim than ennui.
Do you have sadness in your heart for the world that can never be—and sensible shoes? You’ve got weltschmerz.
