“Even old New York was once New Amsterdam!” goes one of the more famous lines in the song “Istanbul (Not Constantinople).” But the Big Apple is hardly America’s only urban area to have undergone a major name change, especially when one considers the people who lived in the country in the first place. Here are the original Indigenous names given to the regions that would become 11 major U.S. cities.

A large portion of the city of brotherly love rests in a region dubbed Coaquannock by the Lenni Lenape. The name means “grove of tall pines.”

A village dubbed Ogapogee—or “the white shell-water place”—by the people of the Pueblo of Tesuque sat in the center of New Mexico’s modern-day capital sometime around the year 900 CE. A brief history of the area can be found here.
Rhode Island’s largest city, along with much of its surrounding territory, was called Pacanaset, meaning “little cleared place” in the Narragansett language [PDF]. An excellent database of Rhode Island’s historical Native American place names was compiled by the Aquidneck Indian Council.

There are several theories as to where Chicago’s name came from; the most widely accepted is that it derives from the French pronunciation of shikaakwa (“stinky onion”), a Miami-Illinois word for the wild leeks (Allium tricoccum) that grew in the area. It’s thought that the explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle was the first to refer to the site of the city by something close to its current name when he referred to it as “Checagou” in the late 17th century.

One theory of many [PDF] about the etymology of the word Manhattan is that it came from Menahatenk, a term meaning “where one gathers bows” in the Munsee language. Contrary to popular belief, however, the island was not purchased for $24 worth of beads.

Unlike the other entries on this list, Washington State’s largest city is actually named after an Indigenous leader: the Duwamish Chief Si’ahl (anglicized as Seattle). Long before the area acquired its current name, however, it was home to many villages, such as Stukw (“logjam”) and Choo-tuhb-AHLT’w (“flea’s house”).
Malibu occupies the ancestral lands of the Ventureño Chumash. The city’s current moniker comes from a former Chumash village named Humaliwo, meaning “where the surf sounds loudly”—a reference to the nearby ocean.

The name of the Shawmut peninsula, the location of present-day Boston, may be derived from the Algonquin word mashauwomuk, or it could be, in the words of researchers from Northeastern University, “an extreme anglicization of a Native American word.” Because of Shawmut’s uncertain origins, it’s unclear what it actually means, but one suggestion is “living waters.”
The area known for housing the University of Michigan was dubbed Kaw-goosh-kaw-nick, likely by the Potawatomi, who were apparently inspired by the sounds of a mill built there. The town was rechristened as Ann Arbor in the 1820s, though theories about the latter name’s origin vary significantly.
Tucson’s moniker was initially Cuk ṣon, meaning “black base” in the O’odham language. (Arizona, meanwhile, was derived from a Native term that meant something like “place of the small spring.”)
A postcard for New Orleans, Louisiana. / Found Image Holdings Inc/GettyImages
Tribes living in the area that would become New Orleans called it “Balbásha” (also spelled Bulbancha or Balbancha). According to John P. Dyson, the word—which means “foreign speakers are there” or “foreign speakers are upon it”—was used by the Chickasaw to refer to the Mississippi River “because of the large number of travelers and alien traders who plied its waters”; later, both the Choctaw and Chickasaw would use the word for New Orleans “due to the great variety of exotic tongues heard there,” Dyson writes [PDF].

When you think of a pet rabbit, you probably imagine the fluffy little bunny you got to take care of for a weekend during kindergarten—not one that’s the size of a small, carrot-eating toddler. But if you’re in the market for a pet that hops like a bunny yet steals food off the kitchen table like a puppy, then the Flemish giant rabbit is the one for you. Here are seven facts you should know about these special creatures.
These rabbits are considered the largest breed in the world. On average, they weigh about 15 pounds and measure 2.5 feet long. However, the male Flemish giant can easily get up to 22 pounds and the female can get up to 20 pounds. One male Flemish giant named Darius actually set a world record, as he was a little over 4 feet long and tipped the scales at 49 pounds.
A male rabbit (a.k.a. a buck) has a broader head than a female (doe) does. The female rabbit has a dewlap—a large flap of skin under her chin—used to keep her offspring warm. While bucks can develop a dewlap as well, it is significantly more pronounced in females and can help set the rabbits apart.
Flemish giant rabbits come in a variety of colors. / Krithnarong Rakngan, FOAP Collection, Getty Images
The American Rabbit Breed Association (ARBA) officially recognizes seven different colors [PDF] for the breed: black, blue, fawn, light gray, steel gray, sandy, and white. In 1916, only those with light gray, steel, or black hues were recognized. Blues and whites were accepted in 1919, followed by sandy-shaded varieties in 1924, and fawns in 1938.
Flemish giants are also known for their easy-going, docile temperaments. / Krithnarong Rakngan, FOAP Collection, Getty Images
The National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders (NFFGRB) was founded in 1915 by a group of four Flemish giant rabbit breeders. They host national shows where breeders are encouraged to show off their beloved bunnies. At shows, rabbits are posed in specific ways so judges can examine their bodies and teeth. To be eligible to compete, the rabbit must be one of the seven recognized colors and be entered into the correct age class, as outlined by ARBA.
Flemish giants are known for their gentle demeanors: They’re generally regarded as docile and, as pets, they can even be trained to use a litter box. However, these furry bunnies were initially bred for other purposes—namely, for meat and fur. They can still be used for meat, but their large bone structure and expensive diet means you’re not getting much bang for your buck. Now, they’re mostly bred for show or as companions, due to their easy-going natures and lifespan (they can live to be 10 years old).
Perhaps unsurprisingly, these big rabbits have impressive appetites to match. Fresh hay constitutes a significant part of their daily diets, with Timothy hay and/or alfalfa recommended by many experts. High-quality protein pellets can also be important to include in their diets, as are certain fruits and vegetables, like carrot tops, apples, bell peppers, and bananas (just in moderation, and always be sure to remove any seeds, pits, and/or stems). Flemish giants also need plenty of water daily.
Their origins might be heavily contested, but their cuteness could never be denied. / Krithnarong Rakngan, FOAP Collection, Getty Images
However, experts seem to agree that they were bred in 16th century Belgium. The first authentic record of their existence dates back to 1860, when Thomas Coatoam authored the Origins of the Flemish Giants. They made their first appearance in the U.S. in the 1890s, when they were brought over from England and Belgium.

Trade routes stitching places of production to places of commerce have popped up throughout ancient history. Scarce commodities, such as salt or spices, that were only available in certain locations were the biggest driver of trade networks. Once established, these roads also facilitated cultural exchanges—including the spread of religion, ideas, knowledge, and even bacteria. Here are several that changed the world.
The Silk Road is the most famous ancient trade route, linking the major ancient civilizations of China and the Roman Empire. Silk was traded from China to the Roman Empire beginning in the 1st century BCE in exchange for wool, silver, and gold coming from Europe. In addition to fostering trade, the Silk Road also became a vital route for the spread of knowledge, technology, religion, and the arts, with many trading centers along the route, such as Samarkand in modern-day Uzbekistan, also becoming important centers of intellectual exchange.
The Silk Road originated in Xi’an, China, and traveled along the Great Wall of China before crossing the Pamir Mountains into Afghanistan and on to the Levant, where goods were loaded on to ships destined for Mediterranean ports. It was rare for tradespeople to travel the full 4000 miles, so most plied their trade on sections of the route. As the Roman Empire crumbled in the 4th century CE, the Silk Road became unsafe and fell out of use until the 13th century, when it was revived under the Mongols. Italian explorer Marco Polo followed the Silk Road during the 13th century, becoming one of the first medieval Europeans to visit China. But the famous route may have spread more than trade and cross-cultural links—some scientists think merchants traveling along the route carried Yersinia pestis, the plague bacteria that caused the Black Death.
Unlike most of the other trade routes in this list, the Spice Routes were maritime paths linking the East to the West. Pepper, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg were all hugely sought-after commodities in Europe, but before the 15th century, North African and Arab middlemen controlled access to trade with the East, making such spices extremely costly and rare. From the 15th to the 17th centuries, new navigation technology made sailing long distances from Europe possible. Europeans took to the seas to forge direct trading relationships with Indonesia, China, and Japan. Some have argued the spice trade fueled the development of faster ships, encouraged colonization, and fostered new diplomatic relationships between East and West. Christopher Columbus had spices on his mind when he set out on his famous voyage in 1492.
The Portuguese, Dutch, and English especially profited from the control of the spice trade in modern-day Indonesia, particularly the area called Malaku (also known as the Moluccas or Spice Islands), which was the only source of nutmeg and cloves at that time. Wars were fought, lands colonized, and fortunes made from the spice trade, making this trade route one of the most globally significant.
The Incense Route developed to transport frankincense and myrrh, which are found only in the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula (modern Yemen and Oman). Frankincense and myrrh are both derived from sun-dried tree sap; these nuggets can then be burned as incense or used as perfume, and were also popular in burial rituals to aid embalming. After Arab nomads domesticated the camel around 1000 BCE, traders began transporting their valuable incense to the Mediterranean, an important commercial hub. Frankincense and myrrh became a significant commodity for the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians. It was said the Roman Emperor Nero had a whole year’s harvest of frankincense burned at the funeral of his beloved mistress.
The trade flourished and, at its height, saw 3000 tons of incense traded along its length every year. Roman historian Pliny the Elder wrote that it took 62 days to complete the route, although it’s clear that at times, the exact route shifted when greedy settlements pushed their luck and demanded taxes that were too high from the caravans coming through. By the 1st century CE, this ancient overland route became largely redundant after improved ship design made sea routes more attractive.
Amber has been traded since about 3000 BCE, with archaeological evidence revealing amber beads from the Baltic Sea region having reached as far as Egypt. The Romans, who valued the stone-like resin for both decorative and medicinal purposes, developed an Amber Road linking the Baltic states with the rest of Europe.
Large deposits of amber are found under the Baltic Sea, formed millions of years ago when forests covered the area. The amber washes ashore after storms, and can be harvested from the beaches across the Baltic, which is how many local amber traders built their business. However, during the crusades in the 12th and 13th centuries, the Baltic became an important source of income for the Teutonic Knights, who were granted control of the amber-producing region. The knights persecuted their Prussian opponents brutally, and put anyone attempting to harvest or sell amber to death. Today, you can find traces of the old Amber Road in Poland, where one of the major routes is known as the Amber Highway.
This ancient route winds for more than 6000 miles, through the Hengduan Mountains—a major tea-producing area in China—and on to Tibet and India. The road also crosses numerous rivers, making it one of the most dangerous of the ancient trade routes. The main goods traveling the route were Chinese tea and Tibetan warhorses, with direct trades of tea-for-horses and vice versa being the main goal of merchants plying the route. Parts of the route were used starting about 1600 BCE, but people began using the entire path for trade from around the 7th century CE, and large-scale trade began taking place starting in the Song dynasty (960–1279).
Research suggests that between 960–1127, some 20,000 Tibetan warhorses were traded along the route every year in exchange for 8000 tons of tea. As sea routes became more popular, the road’s significance decreased. But during World War II, it once again gained importance as Japanese troops blocked many seaports and the Tea Horse Road became a key route for supplies traveling between inland China and India.

Salt has long been a precious commodity—it’s used to flavor and preserve food, and as an antiseptic, for example. But easily harvested salt was a scarce commodity in antiquity, so areas rich in the mineral became important trading centers. Routes connecting these centers to other settlements also became commonplace. Of the many such routes that sprang up, one of the most famous was the Roman Via Salaria (Salt Road), which ran from Ostia, near Rome, across Italy to the Adriatic coast. Salt was so precious, it made up a portion of a Roman soldier’s pay. From the Latin word for salt, sal, we get salary and the phrase not worth his salt—the latter because a soldier’s salt pay was docked if he did not work hard.
Another important salt route across Europe was the Old Salt Road. This path ran 62 miles from Lüneburg in northern Germany, which was one of the most plentiful salt sources in northern Europe, to Lübeck on the north German coast. During the Middle Ages, this route became vital for providing salt for the fishing fleets that left Germany for Scandinavia; the crews used salt to preserve the precious herring catch. It would take a cart delivering salt some 20 days to traverse the Old Salt Road, and many towns along the way grew wealthy by levying taxes and duties on wagons as they passed through.
The Trans-Saharan Trade Route from North Africa to West Africa was actually made up of a number of routes, creating a criss-cross of trading links across the vast expanse of desert. These trade routes first emerged in the 4th century CE. By the 11th century, caravans composed of more than a thousand camels would carry goods across the Sahara. Gold, salt, cloth, and enslaved people were traded along the route, as were objects like ostrich feathers and European guns.
The trade route was instrumental in the spread of Islam from the Berbers in North Africa into West Africa, and with Islam came Arabic knowledge, education, and language. The Trans-Saharan trade route also encouraged the development of monetary systems and state-building, as local rulers saw the strategic value in bringing large swaths of land, and thus their commodities, under their control. By the 16th century, as Europeans began to see the value in African goods, the Trans-Saharan trade routes were overshadowed by the European-controlled transatlantic trade, and the wealth moved from inland to coastal areas, making the perilous desert routes less attractive.
The Levant tin mine in Cornwall, England, is now managed by the National Trust. / Heritage Images/GettyImages
From the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, the Tin Route was a major artery that provided early settlements with access to a vital ingredient for metal-making. Copper must be alloyed with tin to make bronze, an advance that occurred in the Near East around 2800 BCE and created a stronger, better metal than the type used previously. This new technology created a demand for tin, and because it isn’t found in many places, the resource became an important item for trade.
One such tin route flourished in the 1st millennium BCE. It stretched from the tin mines in Cornwall in the far southwest of Britain, over the sea to France, and then southeast to Greece and beyond. Evidence for this route is provided by the many hillforts that sprang up along the way as trading posts. Historians believe trade passed both ways up and down this route. Evidence from the hillforts includes exotic artifacts, such as coral and gold. No written accounts survive from this period, but the archaeological record shows technology and art traveled the route between northern Europe and the Mediterranean alongside tin—thus providing a vital link across Europe.

Tulsa man convicted in spate of purse snatchings serving a life sentence. Oklahoma beginning to grapple with consequences of habitual offender law as other states reform sentences.
Press Release –
Sep 19, 2016
TULSA, Okla., September 19, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– In a 10-week investigation, The Medill Justice Project probed the complex issues involved in the three-strikes laws that have swept the country. The story examines prison overcrowding, the costs of incarceration, prosecutors’ discretion in pursuing convictions and the case of prisoner Rodney Fisher, a Tulsa man convicted of multiple burglaries and robberies in the 1980s and sentenced under the habitual offender law to 52 years in prison.
In 2004, Fisher was found guilty of escaping from a minimum-security prison, yet again triggering the state’s habitual offender law. Typically, the sentence for a prison escape would range from two to seven years. But because Fisher had already been convicted of multiple felonies, the law allowed for the punishment to be multiplied. The range suddenly rose to six years to life.
Fisher got life.
Under Oklahoma law, those convicted of murder can serve as little as 10 years. A robbery sentence can bring less time than that. Some nonetheless say Fisher, now 52, got what he deserved. Others point to action in states that have reformed draconian sentences. In Oklahoma, leaders are beginning to grapple with the consequences of one of the highest incarceration rates in the nation and the consequences of its habitual offender law.
“The three-strikes laws raise important issues about crime and punishment in the United States that need to be addressed but offer no easy answers,” said Northwestern University Prof. Alec Klein, MJP’s director.
Three Northwestern University students at The Medill Justice Project worked in collaboration with Oklahoma Journalists for Justice, a nonprofit investigative journalism organization based in Tulsa.
The Medill Justice Project, founded at Northwestern University in 1999, is an award-winning national investigative journalism center that examines potentially wrongful convictions, probes national systemic criminal justice issues and conducts groundbreaking research. As journalists, MJP advocates only for the truth.

Back in my day, kids learned about periods the old fashioned way: By being shoved into a gender-segregated classroom with the lights off and forced to watch a cartoon about deodorant, new hair growth, and monthly bleeding. But this is 2016, and ladies no longer need to hide in dark classrooms to learn about the joys of sanitary napkins and the maze that is the fallopian tubes. Champion swimmers talk about their periods on international television, and marathon runners let their blood flow freely down their legs as they cross the finish line.
Now you can learn about menarche with a spin of the ovaries. Designers Daniela Gilsanz and Ryan Murphy created the Period Board Game in a Rhode Island School of Design class to turn the awkwardness of menstruation education into a fun experience.
To play, you just have to turn one of the two ovaries, releasing a marble that’s either red or clear. If it’s red, you’re on your period, and you get to move forward on the game board. If it’s clear, sorry, you’ve just learned about vaginal discharge.
You can play cards that protect you from period woes like leaks and PMS, or end up without a tampon headed for the nurse’s office to sit out your next turn. The first person to get around the board—past ovulation, periods, and PMS—wins.
Will this actually turn talking about periods with young girls into a fun, positive experience? Maybe. It at least forces kids to say the word tampon a few times, although without a doubt, kids will find a way to find the whole situation mortifying regardless. But hey, every child should have to confront the realities of ovulation at some point. Plus, it’s so cute!
The game doesn’t have a distributor yet, since it was a student project, but hopefully some company will pick it up and put one in every kid’s hands soon enough.

South Florida Based Traffic Ticket and Violation Law Firm Advises on Fake Red Light Camera Ticket Emails Now Preying Upon Unsuspecting Drivers
Press Release –
Sep 15, 2016
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL, September 15, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– Babkes and Associates, a traffic ticket and violation firm based in South Florida, advises on a new traffic ticket scam alert where false red light camera ticket emails are being sent to unsuspecting drivers.
When it comes to traffic cameras in South Florida, Babkes & Associates warns that these devices have given rise to the fraudulent practice of emailed traffic tickets. Partner and attorney James Babkes cautions that Florida does not currently email citations for traffic violations; in other words, they cannot yet find a driver’s email and connect it to his or her driver’s license or tag to send him or her a traffic ticket.
“Do not fall victim to this scam. Traffic tickets in Florida are only given one of two ways: an actual police officer hands you a ticket, or it is sent to your mailbox at your house.”
James Babkes, Partner & Attorney
“If you receive an email purporting to be from the State of Florida asking you to pay for a violation online, delete the fraudulent email soon as possible,” said James Babkes, Partner & Attorney at Babkes & Associates. “Do not fall victim to this scam. Traffic tickets in Florida are only given one of two ways: an actual police officer hands you a ticket, or it is sent to your mailbox at your house.”
For more than 30 years, Babkes & Associates has defended traffic ticket and traffic-related offenses in court. Their office has handled more than one and a half million citations, proving that they are more than capable of handling any and all traffic criminal-related matters including: accidents, driver’s license suspensions, DUIs, and more.

Chicago, IL, September 14, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– Schools across the country are investing funds into tech devices like iPads and laptops as learning tools for their students. Breakages are a big concern, especially considering the hefty price tag of these devices. According to an article on USAToday.com, an average of 1 out of 5 iPads in schools will suffer breakages. Click here for full article.
A broken screen often leads to a broken iPad. The Slim Tough Case G5 features an armor plate folio cover that completely eliminates broken screens. The dual-layer rugged design with extra padding around the corners brings added drop-resistance. The simple act of adding a case to the device can add years to the life of the device and save school districts (and parents) hundreds of dollars.
The iPad covers are fantastic! They do, indeed, fit perfectly in the Bretford charging machines, and we love the fun colors! We needed to take some precautions before handing just handing them to students (*crash*) and it’s clear that they will be well protected in your lovely sleek, yet sturdy, covers.

Trend expert Jack Uldrich will join other high profile speakers at the World Presidents Organization’s Soul Fuel Conference in Sedona, AZ., September 14-18.
Press Release –
Sep 14, 2016
Phoenix, AZ, September 14, 2016 (Newswire.com)
– Phoenix, AZ, September 13, 2016 (Newswire) – “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them…” The Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu gave this advice to his followers in the 6th Century B.C.
Futurist Jack Uldrich often quotes Lao Tzu in his keynotes addresses, and this week at the World President’s Association’s Soul Fuel in Sedona, AZ., will be no exception. On September 15 Uldrich will deliver his latest keynote: “The Wisdom of Unlearning.”
People are often seeking an ‘Aha Moment.’ One way to think about that is in terms of “The Big AHA.” AHA, in this case, stands for Awareness, Humility, Action. Everyone striving to be a strong leader has the power to apply it, and once they do it awakens a powerful sense of knowing even in the face of uncertainty.
Uldrich is frequently asked, “What will the future look like?” His response is, “Predictably unpredictable.” How can one prepare for the unpredictable? The answer may come as a surprise. Uldrich, like Lao Tzu, says, “the key is embracing paradox.”
Uldrich goes on to qualify his response by adding, “Learning to unlearn, thinking about the unthinkable, recognizing failure as a key component of success, and understanding that an awareness of one’s ignorance is an essential element of true wisdom.”
The School of Unlearning, founded by Uldrich in 2004 is an international leadership, change management, and technology consultancy dedicated to helping businesses, governments, and non-profit organizations prepare for and profit from periods of profound transformation.
Could his work be characterized as Taoist in nature? In a word, yes. Uldrich most often sites Lao Tzu’s quote: “To attain knowledge, add things every day. To attain wisdom, remove things every day.”
“If people strive to rid themselves of obsolete knowledge, ineffective habits, and old mindsets, in other words, unlearn things,” Uldrich says, “there is a great opening for true wisdom to settle in.”
He continues, “People are often seeking an ‘Aha Moment.’ One way to think about that is that AHA stands for Awareness, Humility, Action. Everyone striving to be a strong leader has the power to apply it, and once they do it awakens a powerful sense of knowing even in the face of uncertainty. And that is those are cornerstones to the wisdom of unlearning.
Jack is a frequent speaker on the technology, change management, and leadership lecture circuits. He has addressed hundreds of organizations, trade associations, investment groups around the world, including IBM, Cisco, USAA, ABB, General Electric, Emerson, Verizon, the American Medical Association, General Mills, Pfizer, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He is also a regular guest on CNBC, MSNBC, and CNN.

– NAD Electronics, the highly regarded manufacturer of high-performance audio/video components, announces their new C 568 a high performance CD player engineered for musicality and simplicity true to the brand’s proud tradition. Designed as a direct upgrade to its predecessor, the award-winning NAD C 565 BEE, the C 568 will be available in October with an MSRP of $699.
In addition to the new and more refined cosmetics, the circuit layout and component choices for the C 568 have been extensively updated. Many of the techniques NAD has perfected for High Res Audio playback have been applied to the venerable CD format, including the high precision clock for lowest possible digital jitter performance, the latest generation Wolfson DAC, and the same Super OPAmps derived from NAD’s Masters Series. The cumulative effect of these changes is dramatic, improving low frequency slam and extension, while maintaining the pace and timing for which the C 565BEE was so lavishly praised. Image depth and scale are further enhanced while retaining the timbral accuracy and lucid harmonic structure of its predecessor. In short, C 568 delivers best-in-class sound.
Replacing any award-winning product with another can be risky business but that is essentially what we have done with the C 568,” commented Greg Stidsen, NAD’s Director of Technology and Product Planning. “However NAD is all about continuous improvement and we were confident we could make significant upgrades to an already proven product. True to NAD’s design philosophy, we’ve focused our investment in areas that will provide the most sonic benefit and avoided the frills that only add cost and complexity. The result is a remarkable CD player and outstanding value.”
Greg Stidsen, Director of Technology and Product Planning
The new industrial design of the C 568 imparts a sleek new profile to the Classic NAD face and is the ideal cosmetic complement to the popular C 368 Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifier. The C 568 plays both CD and CD-R/W and decodes MP3 and WMA files copied to CD-R for up to 10 hours of continuous play.
For added convenience, the NAD player offers “Repeat” function for 1 song, 1 disc, or AB repeat, “program play” with direct access from the remote control and “forward” and “reverse” skip and search functions. An informative VFD display gives complete information about tracks and time.
The Model C 568 comes supplied with the new NAD CD-9 remote control, offering all of the features in a simple-to-use layout. In addition, the remote control handset provides direct track access and programming facilities as well, saving the user’s time when they’re storing preferred song titles. Up to 40 tracks can be programmed.
– NAD Electronics, the highly regarded manufacturer of high-performance audio/video components, announced three new Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifiers that cover a wide range of technologies, power and price points yet all provide best-in-class performance and value. The C 338 ($649) is a compact yet powerful integrated amp designed in the classic NAD tradition by offering high end sound and specifications at a remarkably affordable price. The C 368 ($899) and C 388 ($1599 MSRP) are Future Proof Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifiers that are as intelligent as they are powerful. All three models will be available in October.
Technology Advancements Deploying the three major technology innovations recently debuted in the company’s High End Masters Series components, NAD has upped the ante for competitive features and performance in this most important and profitable category of Stereo Separates. While appearing traditional, the combination of these three technologies, create high performance components overflowing with cutting edge digital technology and futureproof features and operation.
“Ever since the NAD 3020 burst on the scene more than forty years ago, the company’s reputation is forever linked to superb sounding, high value integrated amplifiers and these three models proudly carry on that tradition,” commented Greg Stidsen, Director of Technology and Product Planning for NAD Electronics. “NAD has continued to push the boundaries of digital amplification with our Hybrid Digital architecture and Asymmetrical PowerDrive. We have eliminated obsolescence with Modular Design Construction while expanding the frontiers of connectivity with Wi-Fi streaming and BluOS wireless.

Hybrid Digital Amplification bring new levels of performance to the category
Modular Design Construction is future ready for feature upgrades
BluOS™ Wireless Multi-room Audio – the Hi-Res option for streaming music
The C 388 and C 368, shipping now and launching at CEDIA 2016 in Dallas, are Hybrid Digital DAC Amplifiers that bring together all the critical elements of a top performing music system; music sources past, present, and future, in addition to providing a nearly unrestricted reservoir of power that allows your speakers to reveal every nuance of musical detail. Inputs include MM Phono, Stereo Line, Optical Digital and Coax Digtal. Their advanced amplifier stages include many cutting-edge technological breakthroughs developed by NAD over decades of creating affordable ultra-high performance audio components. The C 388 delivers 2 X 150W (350W Dynamic @4 Ohms) while the C 368 offers 2 X 80W (240W Dynamic @4 Ohms) both conservatively rated and with virtually no audible noise or distortion.
Future Proofing with Modular Design Construction (MDC) Found on both C 388 and C 368, MDC this exclusive feature from NAD allows you to customize your NAD amplifier with additional capabilities and features, now or in the future. The two available MDC slots can accommodate a variety of upgrade modules including 4K video capable HDMI switching, additional Digital Inputs, and one of the most advanced Hi-Res Audio multi-room wireless systems available, the BluOS™ music management system developed by Bluesound. BluOS connects to your network and is controlled via smartphone, tablet, or desktop device to manage your music collection and connect to a gr wing list of high-quality streaming music services.
Adding the optional BluOS Module provides instant access to your local area network via Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet connection and adds Hi-Res Audio streaming. The BluOS Module also makes the C 388 a single-zone streamer in a multi-room wireless music system fully compatible with BluOS-enabled music systems and wireless speakers.
C 338 Hybrid Digital Integrated Amplifier This model is previewing at CEDIA 2016 in Dallas, and arriving to market in late autumn. On the surface, the C 338 appears to be the latest iteration of carefully engineered, great-sounding integrated amplifiers from NAD. A more in-depth look reveals the C 338 features a 2 X 50W continuous amplifier utilizing NAD’s Hybrid Digital amplifier technology. This produces a remarkable 150 Watts of Dynamic Power at 4 Ohms, all with virtually no noise or distortion.
The C 338’s active power supply, controlled by NAD’s latest Asymmetrical PowerDrive, is capable of 160 watts continuously and over 300 watts instantaneously to allow for short-term musical transients. Yet it consumes less than half the power as the similarly powered Class AB NAD C 326BEE. It can operate flawlessly with any AC mains voltage from 100 to 240 volts and provides pure DC power to all the various stages of the C 338. This highly efficient supply also provides near perfect regulation of voltage across a wide range of conditions and provides a solid noise-free foundation for the amplifying stages.
The preamp stage is no less impressive featuring a solid state volume control, with a hi-res dynamic range of 120dB in precise 0.5dB steps, as used in ultra-high end preamps. The onboard DAC, using established high-end practice, uses eight DAC channels configured as a Dual Differential array to also boast 120dB dynamic range. Vinyl lovers rejoice at the return of the famous NAD MM Phono stage: wide dynamic range, with high overload margin and low noise, super accurate RIAA equalization, and a capacitor-less infrasonic filter extracts every ounce of energy from your LPs.
So while it is indeed a powerful state-of-the-art amplifier, the C 338 also embodies important technologies such as Wi-Fi and Network. It also provides access to internet radio stations and can serve as an UPnP Client for network streaming from a local NAS library.
Connectivity Plus On all three models (C 388, C 368, C 338), users can connect instantly with Bluetooth® allowing them to stream music wirelessly from any Bluetooth-enabled device. The high performance aptX® codec is fully supported for true high fidelity sound on the top two models. The advanced Bluetooth can also be used to listen to other sources connected to the amp via wireless Bluetooth headphones. There is even a control app that allows smartphones or tablet to control all functions of your NAD amp.
– NAD Electronics, the highly regarded manufacturer of high-performance audio/video components, announced that their CI 720 Network Stereo Zone Amplifier ($899 MSRP) and companion RM720 Rack Mount ($299) are now available. Both models will be available for demonstration at the CEDIA expo, alongside previews of the CI 580 BluOS Network Music Player that is coming later this fall. These products augment the company’s Custom Installation Series (CI Series) and mark NAD’s renewed commitment to the custom installation market.
The CI 720 features BluOS, the operating system developed by Bluesound™, as the first high-resolution multi-room wireless audio solution. BluOS offers the ability to stream audio from local collections or popular cloud services like Tidal, Spotify, Qobuz, and others. More importantly, it also enables deep integration with several of the top control systems, including Control4, Crestron, and RTI. Our pioneering work in the area of digital technology has resulted in the new Hybrid Digital amplifier platform that is astounding audiophiles the world over, achieving levels of detail, transparency and power never achieved at these price points before.”
NAD Hybrid Digital power makes the CI 720 single stereo zone solution something very special in the world of distributed audio. The ‘blade’ form factor means it saves space by residing locally in the zone – behind a flat screen TV for example – where the analog and digital inputs can accommodate the local source in addition to the network stream. A thermostatically controlled forced-air cooling system assures long-term reliability even in enclosed rack installations.
To facilitate mounting the CI 720 in a rack, NAD will offer the RM 720 Rack Mount Accessory for CI 720. This useful accessory allows six CI 720s to occupy a 3U rack space, providing a neat and tidy result.
With a conservatively-rated 60W continuous and up to 165W Dynamic Power available, any speaker can be driven to life-like sound levels with remarkable sound quality. For bass aficionados, a subwoofer output is included.
CI 720 also features both analog and digital inputs, which can support cable boxes, and other non-network sources and makes them available and selectable in every zone. Additional features include USB input, Ethernet In/Out, standard network protocols and universal voltage (100-240).
Stidsen went on to add, “NAD has deep roots in the custom market. Whether the project calls for replacing an obsolete 100-disc CD changer or planning a new multi-room audio system, NAD’s CI Series, particularly with the addition of the CI 720 and the upcoming CI 580 to the product lineup, integrators have immense flexibility to create advanced distributed High Res Audio systems.” .

CS 630 utilizes a dual-voice coil woofer for Stereo or Bi-pole configurations. Two ¾” aluminum dome tweeters with wave guides are employed with rotatable tweeter adjustment.
CS 610 is a value-priced, two-way, 6 ½” In-Ceiling speaker system with a ¾” aluminum dome tweeter with wave guide. The tweeter is rotatable and amiable to focus the sound and has a tweeter level to tailor its high frequency switch to tailor the sound to the environment and/or the listener’s preferences.
In keeping with PSB’s long tradition of high performance, all models feature 6 ½” woofers with carbon-filled polypropylene cones with rigid injection–molded baskets. All include both round and square frameless magnetic grilles to meet a range of design criteria and applications. For secure installation and removal, the CS models feature high-strength Delrin “dog legs” with gold-plated spring-loaded binging posts for secure, lasting signal connections. Preconstruction brackets and backboxes are available. Outer and cutout dimensions are same for all three models.
Coaxing this high level of performance from a custom speaker with narrow depth is an engineering feat, however 40 years of experience along with a deep working knowledge of acoustics gives PSB Speakers a clear advantage. Like all PSB Speakers, final voicing is performed by Paul Barton at Canada’s famed National Research Council. PSB’s research has revealed how listener preferences can be integrated into a wide range of speaker designs for many different applications, yet all featuring consistent sound quality that is natural and lifelike.
“Properly designing an in-ceiling speaker, like these three CustomSound models, requires a thorough understanding of acoustics to get sound that is true-to-nature,” explained Paul Barton, Founder and Chief Designer of PSB Speakers. “PSB has perfected the tools required to get the optimal result for every loudspeaker application, even at modest price points. The CustomSound speakers are voiced to perfectly integrate with other PSB models of In-Room, On-Wall and subwoofers.”
