Announcement of imminent hard fork for EIP150 gas cost changes | Ethereum Foundation Blog

    [ad_1]

During the last couple of weeks, the Ethereum network has been the target of a sustained attack. The attacker(s) have been very crafty in locating vulnerabilities in the client implementations as well as the protocol specification.

While the recent patches have led to an overall increased resiliency in the client implementations, the attacks have also demonstrated that a lower-level change to the EVM pricing model is needed.

For many users, the most visible consequence is probably that they are having difficulties getting transactions included in blocks, and full nodes are facing memory limitations in managing the bloated state.

This is our strategy to address these issues:

    • As a temporary measure to minimize the effects of the most recent attack, we recommend all miners to lower the gaslimit to 500K gas.
    • A hard-fork based on EIP 150 version 1c will be put into effect at block 2457000 [see below]. This will reprice certain operations to correspond better to the underlying computational complexity.
    • A second hard-fork will follow shortly after, aimed at reverting the current “state-bloat” introduced by the attacks. This second fork will serve to remove accounts which are empty; lacking code, balance, storage and nonce == 0.

We have implemented the changes required in the clients and are currently extending and adding tests in an effort to prevent the introduction of consensus-breaking vulnerabilities.

And as a reminder, the Ethereum Bug Bounty is open and includes the new hardfork-implementations.

EDIT: Fork block has been moved to 2463000 in order to accommodate even more testing.

PayBySky Launches World`s First Autonomous Parking Payment Service for Calgary’s ParkPlus System

    [ad_1]

Calgary becomes the first city in the world to offer autonomous parking payment option

    Press Release

    Oct 13, 2016

As of this month, motorists in Calgary are the first in the world to be able to pay for their parking using a fully autonomous payment service powered by PayBySky technology.

PayBySky uses a small in-vehicle device called a ‘Skymeter’ to pinpoint a vehicle’s exact location so it can then make an automatic parking payment on your behalf using Calgary Parking Authority’s ParkPlus account.

“The Skymeter removes the hassle and headache of paying for parking. With the Skymeter, all you need to do is park your vehicle, walk away and let the system pay for your parking.”

    Roger DHollander, President

“The Skymeter removes the hassle and headache of paying for parking,” says PayBySky President Roger D’Hollander. “With the Skymeter, all you need to do is park your vehicle, walk away and let the system pay for your parking.” PayBySky also includes handy additional features such as a trip log book, real time vehicle location and driving behaviour analysis, which are especially useful for company owned vehicles.

PayBySky’s technology works with Calgary’s ParkPlus System to remove the need for cash, credit cards or mobile phones to make a parking payment. All a customer needs for ultimate freedom is to install a Skymeter in their vehicle.

“Calgary is recognized as a world leader in technology, and in keeping with that tradition, we are excited to extend PayBySky convenience to our ParkPlus account holders,” said Calgary Parking Authority General Manager Mike Derbyshire. “The combination of these two systems moves us one step closer to the future of self-driving and autonomous vehicles and we want to make sure that our technology is ready for that reality.”

Calgary based Constant Fire Protection Systems was the first customer to use PayBySky. Rob Anderson, President commented, “This innovative service aligns with our strategy to use progressive technology to increase productivity in all aspects of our business.”

Information about how to obtain a Skymeter can be found at www.paybysky.com.

President Obama, Boeing CEO and Elon Musk Are Competing to Place the First Human on Mars, But According to Leaked Intel by Whistleblower Corey Goode, They Lost The Space Race Decades Ago

    Press Release

    Oct 13, 2016

On Tues, Oct. 11th President Barack Obama wrote an Opinion Editorial via CNN.com announcing to the citizens of the United States that, “America has set a clear goal to send humans to Mars by the 2030s…we do what’s possible before anyone else.” The problem here is that during a Nov. 2015 video interview with Gaia.com, whistleblower Corey Goode from the US Secret Space Program (SSP) said, “There are humans already on Mars and it’s been colonized.” In Dec. 1986, Goode was recruited into SSP – UNSAP (Un-Acknowledged Special Access Programs) under Project Solar Warden. He was assigned to a research vessel in space to study the solar system from Dec. 1986 – Dec. 2007.

President Obama and the US government join a heavy-hitter list of private-sector visionaries, such as Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg and Elon Musk (SpaceX), as they compete to make a historical dent in space. On Oct. 4th, according to Bloomberg Technology, Muilenburg said, “It’s my company that’s sending the first humans to Mars, not Musk. I’m convinced the first person to step foot on Mars will arrive there riding a Boeing rocket.”

“Mars was first visited by the Germans as far back as the 1930s, but during the 70s, US space programs were actively exploring Mars and other planets to establish bases.”

    Corey Goode , SSP Whistleblower

“Mars was first visited by the Germans as far back as the 1930s, but during the 70s, US space programs were actively exploring Mars and other planets to establish bases. In 1980 the US SSP became – Solar Warden. Under Project Solar Warden, vast development and colonization occurred on Mars and other planets. Goode continues, “Bases on Mars were built under the surface.”

Alongside New York Times best-selling author and researcher David Wilcock (“Ascension Mysteries”), Goode is co-host of Gaia’s successful original show: Cosmic Disclosure. With over 70 episodes and a viewership reaching over 68,000 per episode, the show reveals in-depth access to Goode’s astounding, yet controversial, revelations during his 20-year service.

  • 18 Spooky Halloween Phrases From Around the U.S.

18 Spooky Halloween Phrases From Around the U.S.

    [ad_1]

Halloween has been celebrated in the United States since the 1800s, thanks to Irish and Scottish immigrants who brought over their All Hallows’ Eve traditions. So it’s no surprise that sayings in American English have risen around the holiday, including these 18 spooky regionalisms from the Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE).

In Arkansas or Missouri in the 1930s, West Virginia in the 1940s, or Pennsylvania in the 1950s, you might have referred to Halloween as Holly Eve—and so, according to DARE, a Holly Eve-er is “one who goes out on Halloween.”

Poke of moonshine is another name for the jack o’ lantern, at least in Connecticut in the 1930s. A peak in the Adirondacks shares the name and, according to The New York Times, it might come from the Algonquin Indian words pohqui, meaning “broken,” and moosie, meaning “smooth,” possibly referring to “the level summit and stunning east-facing cliffs.” In the case of a jack o’ lantern, it could possibly refer to its carved and intact surfaces. In South Carolina, to move like a poke of moonshine is to move slowly and lazily.

The term false face originated in the late 18th century, according to DARE, to mean a mask in general, and in the early 1900s came to refer specifically to a Halloween mask. A 1911 ad in the Cleveland Plain Dealer said, “Halloween Masks—We have that false face you want for Tuesday night, grotesque and funny.”

The term seems to have been popular in the 1940s and ‘50s, with DARE quotes from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Mississippi, Kentucky, Indiana, and Texas. One individual states that their grandmother, who was born in New York City in the 1880s, used “‘false face’ (stress on ‘false’) as her ordinary word for ‘Halloween mask,’” and while the mask “didn’t have to be worn specifically on or for Halloween … it did have to cover the entire face.”

While trick or treat is the norm for bonbon-begging, in 1930s and ‘40s Detroit, you might have also heard help the poor. Over in parts of California, Ohio, and Minnesota, the candy call might have been soap or eats or soap or grub. According to a Wisconsin resident, soap has to do with “threatening to soap windows” if goodies aren’t given.

Another trick or treat alternative is penny night, at least in southwest Ohio. The term also refers to the Halloween celebration itself. We’re not sure what pennies have to do with it except as sweets stand-ins.

Parts of the North and North Midland— especially Ohio and Iowa—call Halloween like it is: . “Beggars’ Night, how ’bout a bite?” you might have heard in the Buckeye State. Beggars’ night could be celebrated on “one or more days” the week before Halloween, much to the annoyance of several of those quoted in DARE. From a 1936 issue of the Piqua Daily Call in Ohio: “If the kids would get organized and pick on one particular date for their Beggar’s Night, we could brace ourselves for the onslaught.”

One Ohio resident said they had beggar’s night on October 30, on which they said, “Please help the poor,” while on Halloween they said, “Trick or treat.” The same practice also occurred on Thanksgiving eve, according to quotes from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York City.

As a Michigan resident, you might have called the night before Halloween devils night, during which, according to quotes in DARE, kids might vandalize and set fire to abandoned buildings. In 1995, Detroit rechristened devil’s night as Angel’s Night, a community-organized event in which tens of thousands of volunteers “help patrol and surveil the streets during the days leading up to Halloween.”

To New Jerseyans, Halloween eve has always been mischief night, on which you could expect to get TP’d, egged, or spray-painted. According to quotes in DARE, additional activities might include doorbell ringing, gate removing (hence, gate night in some parts of the Northeast), car window soaping, pumpkin stealing, and porch furniture moving.

In England, mischief night refers to the prank-filled evenings of April 30 (May Day eve), October 30, or November 4, the night before Guy Fawkes Day. The Oxford English Dictionary’s earliest citation of the term is from 1830, while DARE’s is from 1977. It’s not clear exactly when the New Jersey/southeastern Pennsylvania meaning of mischief night originated. The earliest record we could find was from 1947 in an article, “Passaic Takes the ‘Mischief’ Out of ‘Mischief Night.’”

A variation on mischief night might be mystery night, attested in Essex and northern Middlesex counties, as well as other parts of north and central Jersey.

Garden State alternatives to mischief night include goosey night and picket night. While picket night might come from “the custom of producing noise by running a stick along a picket fence,” according to Lexical Variation in New Jersey by Robert Foster, it’s unclear where the phrase goosey night comes from. If we had to guess, perhaps from goose, meaning “to poke or startle.”

In some northern parts of the United States, October 30 is known as cabbage night, during which, according to DARE, “young people throw cabbages and refuse on people’s porches, and play other pranks.” Why cabbages? It might have to do with an old Scottish tradition in which young women would pull up cabbages to inspect their stalks. The thickness of the stalks supposedly predicted whether their future husbands would be thin or portly. Then they would inexplicably hurl the vegetables at neighbors’ homes.

In parts of 1950s Vermont, clotheslines were apparently the victim of much TP’ing on Halloween eve. Hence, clothesline night.

Corn was the projectile of choice in Ohio areas in the late 1930s. One resident remembered the custom of celebrating the night before Halloween by chucking “dried, shelled corn” at porches. In other parts of the Buckeye State, ringing and running is preferred on what’s known as doorbell night.

Over in New York, mischief makers would “fling rocks at bare street lights,” says one resident—hence, light night.

After a raucous moving night in Baltimore, you might find anything not nailed down—including gates, flower pots, and porch furniture—moved to a neighboring yard, down the block, or even on the next block.

The cabbage night equivalent in regions including Iowa, Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Ticktack are various “homemade noisemakers used to make rapping or other annoying sounds against a window or door as a prank,” especially around Halloween, as well as the prank itself. In parts of Ohio, one resident said, the ticktack noises were from the sound of corn being thrown at windows.

According to Foster’s Lexical Variation in New Jersey, “Mercer County is the home of Tick Tack Night,” where the name is sometimes reinterpreted as “Tic Tac Toe Night” and some pranksters believed they were “called upon to draw tic tac toe diagrams on houses and walks.”

A version of this story ran in 2016; it has been updated for 2022.

Urban Futurist Jack Uldrich to Discuss the Future of Cities in California

    [ad_1]

Jack Uldrich, Founder of the School of Unlearning, will deliver a keynote on the future of cities in Glendora, CA.

    Press Release

    Oct 12, 2016

Autonomous vehicles, the sharing economy, MOOCs, Urban farming, and the Internet of Things –these are just a few of the trends that will impact the future of cities and metropolitan regions, according to Urban Futurist Jack Uldrich.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Futurists, like Uldrich, who focus specifically on urban trends can be exceptionally helpful resources; helping city officials and planners spot highly innovative, but not necessarily well-known advances in technology.

More cities and economic development agencies are starting to hire futurists, and it makes good sense. City planners are often so bogged down with what is happening right now that they don’t always have the time to take a deep dive into the technological advances that will impact the future.

    Jack Uldrich , Urban Futurist

As a futurist and trend expert, that is Uldrich’s sole purpose. The days he isn’t speaking, he spends researching and writing on game-changing technology, as well as reviewing history and philosophy. His keynotes are often peppered with quotes from Lao Tzu and stories from bygone eras while also keeping his audiences apprised of the latest breakthroughs.

Uldrich says, “More cities and economic development agencies are starting to hire futurists, and it makes good sense. City planners are often so bogged down with what is happening right now they don’t always have the time to take a deep dive into the technological advances that will impact the future.”

When it comes to city planning, he says, “The recent upswing in the sharing economy alone is changing the shape of city economies everywhere,” says Uldrich. “Think: Uber and Airbnb. What will the next big trend in collaborative consumption be? Will urban farming impact local grocers? My prediction is it will. Just as MOOCs, (Massive Open On-line Courses) will affect higher education, and the cities where universities, colleges, and community colleges are situated.”

Today, at 6 pm in Glendora, California, Jack Uldrich will deliver his latest keynote, “A Look into the Future: It’s Closer than You Think,” at Glendora High School Event Center, 1600 E. Foothill Blvd, Glendora, California 91741. The event is free and open to the public.

Uldrich’s client list includes the Savannah Economic Development Agency, the Downtown Council of Minneapolis, the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce and the Miami Downtown Development Agency, and the Urban Land Institute. He also speaks around the world on unlearning, change management, and technological advances in energy and utilities, manufacturing, education, healthcare, retail and finance.

Following his engagement in California, he will travel to Lansing, MI to address the Michigan Health and Hospital Association on October 18.

SoftStone, Inc. was formed more than 20 years ago in an effort to bring children a program that would develop their social and emotional learning skills. Research indicates that the emotional brain develops the fastest from birth to 6 emphasizing that social and emotional skills are not innate and need to be taught and modeled.

“Social media provides a great vehicle for teaching these important “EQ” skills online and elsewhere. Our world is inundated with out of control behaviors that cause so much violence and negativity. We welcome SoftStone and the “CJ” product line into the lives of the families that we serve at Marriah Media around the world. Thank you SoftStone for bringing the Creator of Joy! “CJ” to us all.

Colleen Kelly, President and CEO, Marriah Media

In the “Voices of CJ” program, the featured character CJ, abbreviated for “Creator of Joy,” teaches children the 7 attributes which include empathy, self-confidence and motivation, delaying gratification, self-soothe and calm, forgiveness, sustaining hope and intention and persisting in the face of frustration.

These skills not only help provide emotional well-being but also help to eliminate the behaviors of bullying and mean harmful voices. Educator, Inventor, Consultant and Early Childhood Development Expert, Karen Stone initiated this concept from her own experiences of having been bullied in addition to her family’s dysfunctional dynamics.

“Children are exposed endlessly today to media that makes them vulnerable.  Family quality time is seldom a priority with technology present even at the dinner table.  Parenting is more difficult than ever.  This program provides all caregivers of young children a fun, engaging, stimulating adventure into the world of appropriate social and emotional learning,” says Karen Stone.  She adds, “Social media now provides a great vehicle for teaching these skills online.  Our world needs this desperately as we are constantly barraged with the out of control behaviors that cause so much violence and dissidence.”

The entire SoftStone Product Line, including The “CJ” Parent Package comprised of CJ, the children’s book, “Joy, What A Way To Feel,” and a parent guide,” A Guide to Teach the 7 EQ Abilities at home,”  with activities to build these skills as part of the family’s daily activities is available on Amazon

KD Combo Introduces the Tailored Fit Car Seat Cover in Their Coming Home Collection

    [ad_1]

KD Combo is set to premier their original pattern in the Coming Home Collection: The perfect gift for the polished mom.

    Press Release

    Oct 11, 2016

KD Combo LLC, an up and coming baby lifestyle brand, has announced the release of its 17-piece Coming Home Collection on October 18, 2016.  The highly anticipated collection is for new moms, or once again mothers, with a weakness for fashion.  “Our customers have loved our classic car seat covers, featuring cascading ruffles, which are perfect for baby girls,” says Designer Kyrsten Robbins.  “We’ve received tons of requests for more masculine covers and really haven’t felt that we had the perfect answer, until now! These new Tailored Fit covers are all the rage and are gender neutral.”

The 5 styles of Tailored Fit covers are exclusive to KD Combo. The 4 piece pattern was designed with fresh materials, simple usability, and shaped to minimize stretching and excess fabric over hang. Four pieces allows the distribution of tension over 4 seams as opposed to the standard 2 piece alternative.

Our customers have loved our classic car seat covers, featuring cascading ruffles, which are perfect for baby girls. We’ve received tons of requests more masculine covers and really haven’t felt that we had the perfect answer, until now! These new Tailored Fit covers are all the rage and are gender neutral.

    Kyrsten Robbins, Designer & Owner

It’s important for moms to have the ability to set their car seat down in doctors’ offices, restaurants, and on wet days without worrying about their cover touching the ground. Three styles have medium weight textiles to insulate better in colder temps, while 2 more lightweight options are in buttery soft jersey.  The shape of these covers fit perfectly around car seats providing a cozy space for babies to sleep, bonus germ barrier & they won’t flip up in the breeze.

The ultimate challenge, for KD Combo, was creating a pattern for their customers that would be multi-functional. They are proud to say, mission accomplished! The Tailored Fit was designed with nursing mamas in mind. It can double as a 360-degree nursing cover, if desired.

“We are excited for the launch of the Coming Home Collection that our fans have been waiting months for.  I know our customers will love to have something special in their hospital bags or shortly after the arrival of their babes. These covers are different from anything else in the industry,” says Kyrsten. It is important to KD Combo to provide products that meet mom’s standards of simple, comfortable and functional.  “Mom’s need comfort, especially in those first months as the family welcomes home their newborn(s),” says Danny Robbins, Owner of KD Combo.

The ruffled covers are a classic canopy style in the KD Combo brand. Three more seasonal colors will be released, in addition to their 5 most popular solids.  The positive response to the genuine leather straps with brass snap closures, indicate these styles will sell out quickly. The Coming Home Collection also features styles with a new flower accessory positioned on the iconic left side.

KD Combo is pleased with the initial reception of the Coming Home Collection and can’t wait to get their covers into the hands of their customers.

  • Beyond Jane Fonda: 18 Lesser Known Celebrity Workout Videos

Beyond Jane Fonda: 18 Lesser Known Celebrity Workout Videos

    [ad_1]

You already know Jane Fonda has a fitness empire, but there are a slew of other celebrity exercise videos lurking out there—some which might surprise you. Give one a shot; at the very least, you’ll be entertained while you work out.

Thanks to her roles as Mrs. Potts, Jessica Fletcher, and Auntie Mame, Angela Lansbury earned Tony Awards, Golden Globes, a Grammy, and an honorary Oscar during her lifetime. She also starred in a workout video, released in 1988: Angela Lansbury’s Positive Moves: A Personal Plan for Fitness and Well-Being at Any Age.

Want abs like Mark Wahlberg? Well, as he points out in the video, you might not ever have them. But you can give it a shot with his 1993 video Form… Focus… Fitness.

Estelle Getty, a.k.a. Sophia from The Golden Girls, made a workout video. What else do you need to know?

Want the confidence to wear Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” outfit? You can start with her workout videos. The singer and actress released her first video, CherFitness: A New Attitude, in 1991. It was a big hit, so in 1992, she released another one: CherFitness: Body Confidence.

When Regis Philbin passed away in 2020, it came as a bit of a surprise. Though he was just a month shy of his 89th birthday, he still looked amazing. And he let fans know—and experience—how he kept that youthful exuberance with this1993 gem, which is notable for its guest appearances alone (Kathie Lee and Gelman)!

Capitalizing on her Who’s the Boss fame, then-teen sensation Alyssa Milano filmed a 1988 workout video called Teen Steam. “It was during the time when they started to pull all funding out of schools for [physical education], so there was a need for it,” the actress said in 2015. Milano also sang the theme song for the video.

Dixie Carter, who famously played Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women, can help you limber up with her Unworkout. Even if you’re not into her brand of yoga (check out “The Lion”), you have to admit that any type of exercise is more charming when accompanied by a Southern accent.

Uncle Miltie may have been one of the funniest comedians in Hollywood, but losing mobility and flexibility as you age is no laughing matter. That’s why he released this 1994 video that combines humor (kind of) with a low-impact workout.

Following the success of her remix album Shut Up and Dance, Paula Abdul made her Get Up and Dance workout video in 1995—and it was popular enough to be re-released as a DVD in 2005.

The early ’90s were a goldmine for celebrity workout videos. Step Up Workout with LaToya Jackson was released in 1993—and the four people who have reviewed the VHS tape on Amazon give it positively glowing reviews.

You may never have Fabio’s luscious locks, but if you follow along with his 1993 video, you could get his rippling muscles. OK, probably not.

The 1990 video Heather Locklear Presents Your Personal Workout was filmed after she found fame on T.J. Hooker and Dynasty, but before her turn as Amanda Woodward on Melrose Place. “I had never taken aerobics before and I was doing an aerobics video,” Locklear told Conan O’Brien in 2013. “They have a little earpiece in your ear, and they’re like, ‘Alright two to the right, two to the left.’”

Among Richard Simmons’ impressive lineup of workout videos is a gem called Richard Simmons and the Silver Foxes, geared, obviously, at fitness for seniors. His guinea pigs? Celebrity parents. Among the illustrious moms and dads to be featured were Sylvester Stallone and Farrah Fawcett’s moms and Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino’s dads. Watch Richard and a few of his Silver Foxes promote the new video on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 above.

She could turn the world on with her 1994 low-impact workout, Every Woman’s Workout.

When you’re Zsa Zsa Gabor, you didn’t actually have to work out. You could just hire “two muscley friends” in tank tops to move your body around in various exercise positions for you while you purred “Dahhhhling.”

You might expect a video by a boxing champion to involve boxing, but you would be wrong. George Foreman’s workout is geared more toward the everyman and invites you to just Walk It Off With George. He adds a little jab here and there, and does something dubbed “the Foreman Shuffle,” but for the most part keeps it pretty low-key.

The former All in the Family star made a video in 1988 extolling the virtues of walking using the “Balboa Fitness Walking Technique,” a type of speedwalking.

The actress channeled her interest in spiritualism and metaphysics into this 1989 video, Shirley MacLaine’s Inner Workout. (Don’t miss Part 2.)

A version of this story ran in 2016; it has been updated for 2023.

Patrick Loughney’s 70-700 Victory Ride Celebrates 5 Years in Remission, 70th Birthday; Highlights Importance of Fitness During Treatment

    Press Release

    Oct 6, 2016

Patrick Loughney counted his blessings last November when he turned 70 years old, having made it to the milestone birthday after surgery and treatments for lung cancer, with which he was diagnosed several years before. This fall, he got more good news: reaching the five-year mark in remission from the disease.

To celebrate the milestone, Loughney, president of Longtree & Associates, a health care education company in Middletown, celebrated by biking 700 miles on a “70-700 Victory Ride”; the trip raised funds for programs to benefit cancer patients and their families at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J., where he was treated.

“Studies have confirmed that patients that remain active during cancer treatment tend to have better outcomes. Patrick was able to exercise during his treatment and took his cycling to another level since completing chemotherapy; his dedication and resolve are inspiring.”

    Dr. Ian Horkheimer

An outdoor recreation enthusiast, Loughney had always been physically fit and active. He ramped up a vigorous exercise regimen during chemotherapy treatments to lose weight and improve his lung capacity, as well as improve his overall well-being. He credits his cycling with his pain-free and relatively swift recovery from lung cancer and as a key component of his positive outlook during recovery.

“In spite of being a private person, I wanted to share my story,” said Loughney. “If it helps one person going through any type of traumatic illness or injury, it would be a great honor to me.” He acknowledged that patients might feel overwhelmed and hopeless, adding that, “I was afraid I would never be able to do the things I really enjoyed again. But today, a cancer diagnosis is not the end of the world, and exercise not only helped my physical recovery but helped me cope mentally and emotionally with my disease.”

Loughney stressed how more older adults are getting into bicycling and encourages everyone at any age to stay active—whether with cycling, golfing, walking, swimming and so on—even if modifications are necessary. “The sense of well-being, that your life is not over, really helps you maintain a positive attitude,” he said. “Staying active helps you focus on getting better and in my case, I met so many interesting people and saw many interesting sites while on the trail.”

His oncologist, Dr. Ian Horkheimer of Regional Cancer Care Associates in Little Silver, N.J., noted that Loughney’s bicycle rides were an important part of his recovery.

“Exercise is helpful for both the body and the mind, and from a medical perspective, studies have confirmed that patients that remain active during cancer treatment tend to have better outcomes. Patrick was able to exercise during his treatment and took his cycling to another level since completing chemotherapy; his dedication and resolve are inspiring.”

700 miles of historic landmarks and natural beauty

Loughney’s journey took him round trip from Cumberland, Md. to Pittsburgh, Penn. and back on the Great Allegheny Trail and along the C&O Canal, then on to Washington, D.C. for the final leg. The total trip took two weeks, from August 31 to September 14, 2016. He was joined on parts of the route by friends and family that rode with him or cheered him on from the support vehicle. A map of the route is at https://gaptrail.org/explore

Before riding to Washington, Loughney, friends and family honored his milestone event with a celebratory dinner and overnight stay at the historic Lockhouse 28 on the C&O Canal, near Point of Rocks, Md. on September 10. People followed his progress on his “Cancer Survivor 70-700 Mile Bicycle Tour” Facebook page that tracked his activities, including photos, videos, and travelogue notes about sites he visited.

Loughney’s company is donating one dollar for every mile ridden to the Monmouth Medical Center Foundation at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, N.J., where he was treated. Anyone interested in supporting the hospital in his honor can go https://give.everydayhero.com/us/patrick-loughney-s-70-700-victory-ride.

Afghanistan’s Controversial Social Media Personality Slams Brussels Conference

Artist, blogger, and social media powerhouse Shuja Rabbani has released a music track in protest of recent peace deal with notorious warlord

    Press Release

    Oct 7, 2016

The controversial decision to pardon one of Afghanistan’s most notorious warlords, who’s alleged offences include terrorist attacks and war crimes, has inspired an Afghan musical artist to pen and produce a song in protest. Gulbuddin Hekmatyar was pardoned by the Afghan government in September and Shuja Rabbani has released a song entitled ‘Butcher of Kabul’ in response.

Hekmatyar has previously held political offices and the agreement could mean a return to both public and political life for him. The agreement now means that there is a peace deal between the Afghan government and Hekmatyar’s militant group Hezb-i-Islami. Rabbani, who is Afghanistan’s most influential social media user on Twitter, is among those objecting the decision. The release of Rabbani’s song, entitled after Hekmatyar’s infamous nickname, aims to act as a sign of peaceful protest to highlight the distrust and betrayal those that disapprove of the move feel towards the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s decision.

“The hypocrisy of Afghan President in Afghan Conference in Brussels – on one hand talking women’s rights, on another making peace with most misogynist figure known to Afghanistan such as Hekmatyar?!”

    Shuja Rabbani

Following two-day Brussels Conference on Afghanistan that concluded on Wednesday, Rabbani tweeted in protest, “The hypocrisy of Afghan President in Afghan Conference in Brussels – on one hand talking women’s rights, on another making peace with most misogynist figure known to Afghanistan such as Hekmatyar?!”

Rabbani also criticized Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for her remarks on welcoming the peace process by remaining silent on Hekmatyar’s war crimes by tweeting, “I’m shocked to see @FedericaMog welcome peace with Hekmatyar during the Afghan Conference. Has she seen the faces of victims of acid attacks by HIA?” making a reference to Hekmatyar’s political party.

The music track begins with the sounds of explosions, sirens and children crying to reference and serve as a reminder the volatility and terror that the country of Afghanistan has experienced in recent decades. Rabbani is among Afghanistan’s most recognised English bloggers and social media influencers, he regularly comments on issues affecting his home country and wider trends through his blog and music.

Social Startup Global Empowers Announces Launch with First Product Vigor Aqua Advanced Water Purification Tablets to be Ready Soon

    [ad_1]

    Press Release

    Oct 4, 2016

Global Empowers is a social startup with a powerful vision of helping the people of the world who need it most.  Their first product, Vigor Aqua, is an advanced water purification tablet that also acts as a vitamin and food source.  Something which, when produced and widely spread, could change the face of certain parts of the world for the better in a very dramatic and lasting way.

There’s no argument that lack of clean water and food is one of the most serious problems faced by large amounts of people in the world today.  Few understand this better than the recently launched social startup Global Empowers, founded by passionate entrepreneur Joseph Mwansa born and raised in Zambia, who has personally seen the different standards of living people in the world face, and has positioned Global Empowers to help change it for the better.  Global Empowers first product, the advanced water purification tablet Vigor Aqua, is close to being released and is expected to be able to help address the clean water and food problem faced by poor communities across the world in a way that is ethical, affordable and effective.  Excitement surrounding the project is high.

“Global Empowers has a mission of offering help to people who are living in very dire circumstances who desperately need the things we often take for granted like clean water and adequate nutrition,” commented Mwansa.  “We believe when we all work together we can make the world a better place.  We’ve started by tackling the problem of having access to clean water, with our first product Vigor Aqua. This purifies water powerfully, removing germs and viruses and making it safe to drink.  What this can do for the health of a community who formerly only had contaminated water to drink is amazing in all the best ways.”

According to Global Empowers, Vigor Aqua will address many important issues in a safe and effective way.  Highlights include eliminating germs and viruses that cause water borne diseases. Press Release

    Oct 4, 2016

As an independent African-American voter it’s time that the African-American communities have an honest conversation about who the next president will be.

The 2016 Presidential Election might be the most important election in recent history of Blacks in America. As African-Americans come down from our emotional high of having a African-American President, and our nation focusing on Bathroomgate to protect less than 1 percent of our nation’s population. It is time for the Black community to reconsider our blind loyalty to the Democratic party. It’s remarkable that the African-American community, which is traditionally a conservative group, is just a side bar conversation in this year’s election cycle with pundits, and Black elites assuming that the majority Black community will automatically vote democrat. That is a mistake.

In 1854 the Republican Party was created to end slavery, the question now is can Donald Trump end decades of economic slavery in the Black community? If history is truly the great road map, the African-American community should take a glance at both parties only on the facts, not emotion. Donald J. Trump is saying something to the African-American community that we’ve been waiting on a presidential candidate to pledge for a long time. Mr. Trump consistently talks about bringing jobs back to our community and rebuilding the economy in our community. We need jobs now.

Let’s take an honest look at the economic condition for Blacks for the last 8 years. Black youth have an almost 60% unemployment rate. There are more Black Americans living in poverty today (10.8 million at 26.2%) than there were in 2009 (25.8%). Blacks make up 13% of our nation’s population yet 26.4% of Black households receive food stamp assistance. The jobless rate for Blacks is currently 9.5%, nearly double the national average. One study found that over the past 15 years, the average hourly wage of African-American workers fell by 44 cents, while white and Hispanic wages rose by 48 and 45 cents during the same period.

With the financial devastation of cities like Detroit, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Memphis and Milwaukee, it’s time for African-Americans in America to stop being so blindly loyal to any of the political parties and start voting for the party who has the best economic plan for Black America!
