Betfred’s profits reach $21.9M in 2022, driven by reopening of UK betting shops | Yogonet International

UK-based sports betting operator Betfred has reported a substantial increase in profits and customer activity. The gambling company made profits after tax of nearly £20 million ($21.9 million) in the year ending on 25 September 2022, up from just over £5 million ($9.8 million) the year before. This surge is largely attributed to the unrestricted reopening of its high street betting shops following 2021’s lockdown restrictions.

Gambling shops were among the last to reopen in the UK during the pandemic. However, since then, their sales have risen sharply. According to the newly published accounts at Companies House, Betfred’s turnover grew by nearly £200 million ($219.3) to reach £723 million ($793 million).

Betfred customers wagered £8.8 billion ($9.6 billion) in 2022, a sharp increase on nearly £7 billion ($7.6 billion) the year before. However, despite this growth, these figures remain below the £10.1 billion ($11.07 billion) wagered in the 2018/2019 period, before the onset of the global pandemic.

Accounts show that the Done Family, Betfred’s owners, withdrew a £51 million dividend from the company in November 2021. The accounts also revealed a £2.9 million ($3.06 million) payment made to the UK’s Gambling Commission (UKGC) in settlement over failures related to customer care and anti-money laundering (AML) controls.

Corporate expenses witnessed an increase as Betfred paid a higher machine-gaming duty of £54 million ($59.2 million) in 2022, compared to £31 million ($34 million) in the previous year.

The annual accounts also showed that Betfred closed 51 shops during the period, leaving it with a network of 1,419 locations. In 2019, the group had 1,578 shops. Betfred said it would continue to review loss-making shops and consider them for closure.

Moving into the 2022/2023 fiscal year, Betfred’s leadership noted that units are making contingencies for an expected rise in operational costs related to stricter compliance and regulations. Beyond the UK, the company continues seeking expansion opportunities in North American and South African markets.

  • Kentucky regulator schedules special meeting to review, approve sports betting regulations | Yogonet International

Kentucky regulator schedules special meeting to review, approve sports betting regulations | Yogonet International

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has scheduled a special meeting Monday to review and approve the state’s sports betting rules and regulations. Following its approval in the state legislature earlier this year, sports betting is expected to be available in the fall, according to industry participants and observers. However, the Commission has not yet provided an estimated timeline.

The KHRC Chairman, Jonathan Rabinowitz, noted at a meeting on June 20 that the commission has reached out to sports betting regulators in Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey, and Massachusetts to ensure best practices are met. And in order to meet the necessary manpower to launch sports betting in the Bluegrass State, Rabinowitz said 14 employees are being hired by the regulator.

Upon the completion of these regulations by the commission, the nine racetracks in the state will be eligible to apply for sports betting licenses. The commission will then review those applications, grant licenses to qualified applicants, ensure that both retail and online sportsbooks adhere to regulatory requirements, and finally authorize the commencement of sports betting activities.

As per the law, each licensed horse track (of which there are nine in the state) will be eligible to partner with up to three online sports betting skins, allowing for a maximum of 27 operators in Kentucky. The 27 maximum is expected to allow for a mix of more established online sports betting brands, as well as smaller firms hoping to get into the market.

    Bill Carstanjen

Bill Carstanjen, CEO of Churchill Downs Inc., said in May that it would likely be “around football season” that sports wagering might go live. Churchill Downs is the biggest player in the state’s horse racing and historical gaming industries and is eyeing expansion in this new state gaming vertical.

Rep. Al Gentry, a Louisville Democrat who co-sponsored the sports betting legislation, previously said that football season is a realistic target for sports betting to become available. However, the legislation gives the racing commission until the end of 2023 to set up regulations and award licenses.

Sen. Majority Leader Damon Thayer and Gov. Andy Beshear have also both shared their optimism that brick-and-mortar sports betting will begin in the state by the start of the football season. Beshear said he hopes the first bets can be placed by September.

  • USA sports betting: These are the states that will legalize sports betting soon | Yogonet International

USA sports betting: These are the states that will legalize sports betting soon | Yogonet International

Sports betting has come a long way since the Supreme Court struck down PASPA in May 2018.

There were many states in 2022 that legalized sports betting, and in 2023 we have also seen new markets open up to the world of iGaming, with many bookmakers obtaining licences in new parts of the United States.

Not so long ago, Nevada was the only state that offered legal sports betting. But from the repeal of PASPA, more than half of the country has started the process of legalizing US sports betting sites.

Currently, 35 states and Washington DC offer some form of legalized sports betting, with new states set to launch legal sports betting soon. According to a report by Statista, revenue in the U.S. sports betting market is forecast to reach US$7.62 billion in 2023 and earnings are expected to expand to US$23.8 billion by 2026.

Which states are the last to have legalized sports betting?

Some of the last states to legalize sports betting were Wyoming, Massachusetts, Ohio, Kansas and Maryland.

In May 2021, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed a bill that would allow land-based and online casino operators to offer sports betting. In addition, the state also allows the Maryland Lottery to offer sports betting online.

On the other hand, Massachusetts legalized online gambling in March of this year, although in-person gambling was already been up and running since January.
Kansas, in turn, has some of the best betting sites in the country, such as BetMGM, Fanduel and Caesars, operating in the market.

Arizona legalized sports betting shortly before all these states, in September 2021. There are now 17 active online sportsbooks in the state, including DraftKings, Caesars, BetRivers, FanDuel, Betfred and BetMGM. These are the best bookmakers in the country, according to Miscasasdeapuestas.com/us.

With all these states entering the game in 2022 brought the total number of states in which sports betting is legal to 35. We expect this number to grow even further in 2023. But the success of sports betting means there are only 15 states left on the board to conquer. Who will be next?

Which states will join in 2023 and 2024?

The next confirmed states to legalize sports betting are Kentucky, North Carolina and Vermont. Rhode Island will legalize online casinos only.

This will make a total of 38 states to legalize sports betting

    North Carolina:
North Carolina has already legalized in-person sports betting and is now looking to expand into online betting. Although little has changed, the national landscape may tip the balance towards mobile legalization in 2023.

This is where the rest of the action is across the United States. North Carolina became the 27th US state to allow online sports betting when Governor Roy Cooper signed House Bill 347 into law on Wednesday.

    Kentucky
Sports betting in Kentucky is already legal, although it is not yet available. The Kentucky
legislature passed House Bill 551, legalizing in-person and online sports betting across the state. This was signed by Governor Andy Beshear on March 31, and by law, sportsbooks must launch in Kentucky by December 28, 2023.
It is expected that the bookmakers Fanduel and Draftkings, two of the most popular in the country, will be available in the state, among others.

    Vermont
Governor Phil Scott officially signed the legislation into law on June 14, making sports betting legal in Vermont. The status is expected to launch sometime in late 2023 or early 2024. The Department of Lotteries is working to secure contracts with up to six online sportsbooks.

Vermont is the second-smallest state by population in the United States after Wyoming, so the projections are not very high. Online gambling is expected to bring the first year about $2 million in benefits for the state.

    Rhode Island (Casino)
Next year, online casinos, including slots and table games, will finally come to the state of Rhode Island. Governor Dan McKee has signed into law Senate Bill 948. With the signing of this bill in June 2023, online casinos will launch in April 2024.

For now, sports betting is not expected to be legalized. Rhode Island is one of the smallest states in the country.

What states are still up in the air?

Although only a few remaining states have not yet approved sports betting, they represent a significant portion of the population, including the two most populous states with the highest GDP: California and Texas.

There are some states that are in the crosshairs and have been clearly targeted as they have previously put efforts into legalizing gambling:

    Missouri: Postponed
Missouri is another state that was planning to legalize sports betting in 2023. In May 2021, Governor Mike Parson signed a bill that allows land-based and online casino operators to offer sports betting. In the 2023 legislative session, everything seemed to be going smoothly when the House gave the green light to the sports betting bill. However, in an unexpected twist, the Senate blocked it, so legalization efforts should restart in 2024.

Despite setbacks to sports betting bills in Missouri in previous years, there is strong interest from legislators, citizens, and prominent industry players in legalizing online sports betting in the state.

    What about Florida?
Florida is another state that plans to legalize sports betting in 2023. In April 2021, Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that allows tribal casino operators to offer sports betting online and in person. However, the state still must negotiate terms with the tribes before sports betting can begin.

Missouri is another state that plans to legalize sports betting in 2023. In May 2021, Governor Mike Parson signed a bill that allows land-based and online casino operators to offer sports betting. However, the state has yet to establish a regulatory framework before sports betting can begin.

FanDuel teams up with the Canadian Football League as its first authorized operator | Yogonet International

FanDuel has entered into a new partnership with the Canadian Football League (CFL). As part of the deal, the Flutter Entertainment-owned brand will become the league’s first authorized gaming operator and an official sportsbook partner.

Ontario customers will be able to place bets on the CFL through FanDuel, which secured a license in the Canadian province ahead of the launch of legal sports betting in April last year.

Betting markets will include in-game player props, such as anytime touchdown scorer, and a range of futures bets, including for the winner of the 110th Grey Cup. The CFL season began on June 8 and will run through the end of October.

“Responsible sports wagering is another way for our league to further its connection with our fans,” said CFL chief commercial officer Tyler Mazereeuw. “In addition to taking in our fun, fast and entertaining brand of football, some fans may wish to engage with the game on a more personal level. We’re excited to work with FanDuel to deliver an exciting and innovative betting experience.”

“We are very proud to kick off our partnership with the CFL, a league with some of Canada’s most passionate fans,” said Dale Hooper, GM of FanDuel Canada. “The CFL is a Canadian institution, and we are excited to provide sports bettors with an industry-leading experience.”

Hooper also highlighted the parties’ commitment to responsible gambling under the new deal. “Responsible gaming is the foundation of FanDuel’s core values,” he stated. “It is built into everything the company does – from employee training, to in-product features and marketing strategy.”

The deal follows FanDuel’s track of consistently leveraging partnerships with sports leagues in North America, including its partnership with the MLB. The sportsbook is the co-exclusive sports betting partner of the league and uses MLB branding across its marketing campaigns.

FanDuel is also an official sports betting partner of the NFL. The operator’s relationship with TSN makes it a natural fit to work closely with the CFL, as the two parties formed a multi-year partnership in April 2022. At the time, FanDuel became the official sportsbook partner for TSN, which broadcasts CFL games across Canada.

  • Brazilian govt. to create National Gaming Secretariat to advance sector regulation, taxation | Yogonet International

Brazilian govt. to create National Gaming Secretariat to advance sector regulation, taxation | Yogonet International

The CPI-FUTE, the Parliamentary Commission that investigates cases of match-fixing in sports betting, met with government officials, including José Manssur, special advisor to the Brazilian Ministry of Finance, to discuss the regulation and taxation of sports betting.

In this meeting, Manssur announced that in the next few days, the Executive Branch will send a provisional measure and a bill to Congress with the purpose of regulating the activities of foreign sports betting sites operating in the country.

The bill includes the creation of a National Secretariat of Games and Lotteries, which will be in charge of regulating not only fixed odds betting (as is the case of sports websites) but the totality of games and lotteries of the federal government, as reported by the Chamber of Deputies News Agency.

“We are going to send [the proposals] to the CPI so that it can contribute from the conclusions that can be drawn here,” said Manssur, at the public hearing proposed by Congressman Aureo Ribeiro (Solidariedade-RJ) to discuss the legality, taxation, and regulation of sports betting.

He also said that the Executive should, through ordinances, establish specific rules for the issue investigated by the CPI: financial fraud involving gambling sites based abroad.

According to Mansur, the government should require that companies operating betting sites be headquartered in Brazil, have a minimum share capital, and employ a certain number of Brazilians. A subsidy amount will also be required for accreditation purposes.

    Match manipulation

In response to Congressman Ribeiro, the representative of the executive affirmed that the manipulation of results in soccer matches will be tackled with the use of monitoring systems that will allow real-time control of the volume of bets received by all accredited operators in the country.

“A bet, for example, of BRL 1 million (more than $200,000) on a corner kick, will turn on a yellow signal within the Ministry of Finance and, based on the monitoring of the standard behavior of athletes, we will be able to determine that companies remove that game from the betting card,” Manssur explained.

According to the regulation, the amounts collected from betting must be allocated as follows: 0.82% for the education area, 2.55% for the National Public Safety Fund, 1.63% for clubs for transferring brands to betting websites, 10% for social security and 1% for the Ministry of Sports.

“Every day that Brazil does not regulate this matter, it loses BRL 10 million (more than $2 million),” the Ministry of Finance official emphasized.

Other issues addressed at the meeting were responsible gambling and compulsive gambling. “Gambling is not a way of life. The idea of social climbing through gambling is not a message that the government regards as correct”, added Manssur.

    Valdemir de Sousa

For his part, Valdemir de Sousa, Deputy Director of the Conduct Supervision Department of the Central Bank of Brazil, stated that the payment flow of companies based abroad is carried out through foreign exchange operations.

“It is not up to us to deal with the regulation of betting, but it is up to us to deal with payment flows. This is regulated by Bacen and has its own code. From the Central Bank’s point of view, everything is perfectly within the exchange regulation,” he said.

However, he indicated that the bank had to monitor some movements made in betting after verifying an ” alarming” increase in the volume of funds moved: around BRL 8 billion ($1.647 billion) between January and June of this year.

Sousa also showed his support for regulation as a way to improve the control of suspicious operations. “I think we would benefit in two aspects: both in the improvement of inspection conditions and in the reduction of the risk of using games for money laundering and fraud, as well as in the improved treatment of clients,” he commented.

Irish and German derbies set to make World Pool debut on July 2 | Yogonet International

World Pool, the globally commingled horse racing pools created and powered by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), will be in operation at both the Irish and German Derbies for the first time on July 2nd.

The Deutsches Derby marks the first time World Pool has operated in Germany. The launch will see what the club calls the country’s richest race offered to bettors in 28 countries two hours before World Pool also makes its Irish Derby debut at the Curragh on the same day.

The Irish Derby Day card will be World Pool’s first meeting at the Curragh and the third-ever Irish World Pool fixture, following the 2021 and 2022 Irish Champions Day meetings from Leopardstown.

Both races are “historic contests for the classic generation,” notes World Pool, with the Deutsches Derby being first staged in 1869 and the Irish Derby having over 150 years of history. Through this new addition, World Pool will offer racing fans from around the globe “an exciting chance to get involved.”

World Pool will be in operation for only the Deutsches Derby from Hamburg, while all eight races on the Irish Derby Day card from the Curragh will be World Pool events.

There will be six World Pool bet types available on the Irish and German cards – Win, Place, Quinella, Quinella Place (Swinger), Forecast (Exacta) and Tierce (Trifecta) – while the Irish Derby card will also feature the Treble (pick the winner in three selected races) bet type.

Sam Nati, Head of Commingling at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said: “The various international derbies carry particular importance in Hong Kong across various stakeholder categories. These include racing fans, wagering customers and owners, so the German and Irish Derbies are an important addition to the World Pool schedule.”

“The Curragh is the home of flat racing in Ireland and we are honored that the Dubai Duty-Free Irish Derby has been selected as a Tote World Pool meeting for the first time. We are greatly looking forward to Sunday’s card which is full of quality and competitive racing,” added Brian Kavanagh, Chief Executive Officer of The Curragh Racecourse.

For his part, Jason Morris, HRI Director of Racing and Strategic Projects, said: “Horse Racing Ireland is delighted to be welcoming a second World Pool Day to Ireland and is extremely grateful to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for its growing coverage of Irish racing, which will now showcase to an even wider international audience the feature Classic of the Irish Flat racing calendar.”

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby is the highlight of an extremely competitive card featuring four Black Type races and four Premier Handicaps. The financial benefits that will flow from being a World Pool event have allowed HRI and the Curragh racecourse to boost prize money significantly for the day with €1.97 million ($21,50,895) on offer, an overall increase of €425,000 ($462,442) on last year, and with every race worth at least €100,000 ($1,09,184).”

Currently, Arizona boasts 17 mobile sports betting operators and 25 retail sports betting locations spread across the state. Additionally, seven fantasy sports operators have been approved for operations.

With April’s figures added to the mix, Arizona has now become the fastest state to surpass $10 billion in accumulated sports wagering handle. The Grand Canyon State reached this milestone only 20 months after the launch of its legal market, eclipsing Illinois, which reached the $10B mark in 22 months in February 2022.

Since the launch of betting operations in September 2021, Arizona has quickly positioned itself among the top 10 markets for sports wagering at the national level. April’s solid handle ranked seventh among 29 states and marks the 11th time Arizona surpasses $500M in wagers for a month.

With this new achievement, Arizona joins a select group of $10B+ sports betting handle states, which also includes Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

  • How Kyrsten Sinema’s decision makes Democrats’ 2024 Senate map tighter | CNN Politics

How Kyrsten Sinema’s decision makes Democrats’ 2024 Senate map tighter | CNN Politics

    CNN
     —

Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema decided to shake up the political world on Friday by becoming an independent. The former Democrat is still caucusing with the party in the Senate, so the Democratic caucus still has 51 members. Now, instead of 49 Democrats and two independents within their ranks, the caucus has 48 Democrats and three independents.

But that simple math hides a more clouded picture for Democrats and for Sinema herself. Sinema’s interests are no longer necessarily the Democrats’ best interests in the next Congress, and the 2024 Senate map became even more complicated for Democrats with Sinema’s decision.

To be clear, Sinema has always been a thorn in the Democrats side during her time in Congress. Over the last two years, Democrats have had to almost always make sure that any bill or nomination had Sinema’s support to have any chance of passing. That’s the math when you have only 50 Senate seats in a 100-seat chamber. A lot of bills and nominations were never voted on without Sinema and Manchin’s backing.

From 2013 (Sinema’s first term in Congress) to 2020, Sinema voted against her party more than almost any other member of Congress. She stayed with the party about 69% of the time on votes where at least one half of the Democrats voted differently than half of Republicans. The average Democrat voted with their party about 90% of the time on these votes.

It’s quite possible that Sinema’s percentage of sticking with the party will lower now that she is an independent. Consider the example of former Sen. Joe Lieberman. The longtime Democrat won reelection as a third-party candidate in 2006, after losing the Democratic primary to a left-wing challenger (the now fairly moderate Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont)

Relative to the average Senate Democrat, Lieberman voted with the party 10 points less of the time after becoming an independent than he had in his last term as a Democrat. If that happens with Sinema, she’ll become even more conservative than West Virginia’s Joe Manchin (the most conservative member of the Democratic caucus).

This would make sense because the incentive structure is now very different for Sinema. Ahead of a 2024 reelection campaign, she no longer has to worry about winning a Democratic primary. Sinema has to worry about building a coalition of Democrats, independents and Republicans. That is far more difficult to do if you’re seen as too liberal.

Indeed, the big reason Sinema became an independent is because it would have been very difficult to win a Democratic primary. Her approval rating among Arizona Democrats in an autumn 2022 CES poll stood at just 25%. A number of Democrats (e.g. Rep. Ruben Gallego and Rep. Greg Stanton) were already lining up to potentially challenge her in a primary.

A question now is whether Sinema’s decision to become an independent will dissuade some of those Democrats from running. The idea being that Sinema still caucuses with the Democrats, and Democrats wouldn’t want to split the Democratic vote in a general election allowing a Republican to win in a purple state like Arizona.

It’s an interesting bet from Sinema. After all, Democrats usually don’t run a candidate against independent Sen. Bernie Sanders in Vermont. The Democrats who run against independent Sen. Angus King in Maine have not gained traction in recent elections. Don’t forget the aforementioned Lieberman won as a third-party candidate.

The electoral math structure was and is totally different in these circumstances, however. Sanders wouldn’t attract a left-wing Democratic challenger because he is already so progressive. Lieberman declared his third-party candidacy after the primary, so Republicans didn’t have time to find a well-known challenger. Republicans also knew that Lieberman, who was an ardent supporter of the Iraq War, was probably the best they could hope for in the deeply Democratic state of Connecticut.

This leaves the King example. King, like Sinema, is a moderate from not a deeply blue or red state. There’s just one problem for Sinema in this analogy: King is popular. He had previously won the governorship twice as an independent and has almost always sported high favorables.

Sinema is not popular at all. The CES poll had her approval rating below her disapproval rating with Democrats, independents and Republicans in Arizona. Sinema’s overall approval stood at 25% to a disapproval rating of 58%. Other polling isn’t nearly as dire for Sinema, but the average of it all has her firmly being more unpopular than popular.

Put another way, Sinema’s current numbers are probably not going to scare off many challengers from either the Democratic or Republican side. Additionally, there’s zero reason for Democrats to cede the ground to Sinema because it would keep a Republican from winning. It isn’t clear at all that Sinema can win as an independent.

What Sinema’s move did accomplish is that it made the electoral math a lot more complicated in Arizona and therefore nationally. Having two people in the race who are going to caucus with the Democratic Party likely makes it more difficult for the Democrats to win.

One potential worrisome example for Democrats in a purple state (at least then) was the 2010 Florida Senate race. Then Republican Gov. Charlie Crist decided to run as an independent after it became clear he wouldn’t beat the more conservative Republican Marco Rubio in a Republican primary. Crist, who said he would caucus with the Democrats, split the Democratic vote with then Rep. Kendrick Meek, and Rubio cruised to a win.

I should point out that Democrats certainly have a chance. The 1968 Alaska Senate race, for example, featured two Democrats (Mike Gravel and then Sen. Ernest Gruening as write-in). Gravel won in the state which Republican Richard Nixon carried, too, by a few points.

In 2024, Arizona Republicans could nominate an extreme candidate that flames out. They just lost every major statewide race in 2022 because of who they nominated.

Don’t dismiss the possibility too that Sinema could win like Harry Byrd did in the 1970 Virginia Senate election when both parties nominated candidates. Maybe voters will like Sinema’s new independent registration.

Sinema also could find herself flaming out when running in the general election without a major party backing her like Gruening did in 1968 or then Sen. Jacob Javits in the 1980 New York Senate race.

    We just don’t know.

All that said, the Democrats already have a difficult map heading into 2024. Depending on whether the Democrats win the presidency (and have a Democratic vice president who can break Senate ties), they can afford to lose zero to one Senate seats and maintain a majority.

The vast majority, 23 of the 34, senators up for reelection in 2024 caucus with the Democrats. An abnormally large number (7) represent states Republican Donald Trump won at least once. This includes Arizona.

With Sinema’s break from the Democratic party, the road is, if nothing else, curvier for Democrats.
