  • San Francisco parents hold virtual roundtable to talk about ongoing teachers’ strike


    The teachers’ strike in the San Francisco Unified School District is about to go into its fourth day, and many parents are feeling frustrated about how their families are stuck in the middle of the contract negotiations.

    So, they held a virtual roundtable Wednesday night to share their frustrations.

    “Students shouldn’t have to bear the burden of all of these adult disagreements,” parent Alex Wong said. “Every person involved in these negotiations needs to be working at being at the bargaining table every hour of every day.”

    “We’re asking both sides to negotiate with the urgency that our kids deserve because every day matters to our kids’ education,” parent Meredith Dodson added.

    Some parents shared stories, such as Bridget Blounx, a grandmother and caregiver of three children, some with special needs.

    “Even though I’m working remote, I’m having to stop in between my client interviews and intakes to answer questions and to try to triage and help navigate the kiddos with their different work,” Blounx said.

    While parents say it’s imperative to get kids back in the classroom now, Wilbur Liu, a Lowell High School student, also agrees.

    He appreciated the break, but he feels it’s important to be back in school, at least by next week.

    “Hopefully, it doesn’t go on for too long. Obviously, no one likes losing out on too much learning,” he said.

  • In blunt warning, the US says Peru could lose its sovereignty to China

    LIMA, Peru — The Trump administration on Wednesday expressed concern that China was costing Peru its sovereignty in solidifying control over the South American nation’s critical infrastructure, a blunt warning after a Peruvian court ruling restricted a local regulator’s oversight of a Chinese-built mega port.

    The $1.3 billion deepwater port in Chancay, north of Peru’s capital of Lima, has become a symbol of China’s foothold in Latin America and a lightning rod for tensions with Washington.

    The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs said on social media that it was “concerned about latest reports that Peru could be powerless to oversee Chancay, one of its largest ports, which is under the jurisdiction of predatory Chinese owners.”

    It added: “We support Peru’s sovereign right to oversee critical infrastructure in its own territory. Let this be a cautionary tale for the region and the world: cheap Chinese money costs sovereignty.”

    The concern comes as the Trump administration seeks to assert dominance over the Western Hemisphere, where China has long built influence through massive loans and high trade volumes.

    Chancay, along the Pacific coast, is part of Beijing’s Belt and Road initiative, an infrastructure program that has seen Chinese state-owned banks offer sizable loans or financial guarantees to construct seaports, airports and highways, among other projects, across multiple continents.

    As Latin America’s deepest port, Chancay is capable of berthing some of the world’s largest cargo ships traveling between Asia and South America. China has been Peru’s biggest trading partner for more than a decade now.

    China’s state-owned shipping and logistics company Cosco, a majority shareholder in the port, dismissed the U.S. claims.

    In response to questions from The Associated Press, it said the court ruling “in no way involves aspects of sovereignty” and insisted that the port remains “under the jurisdiction, sovereignty and control of Peruvian authorities, subject to all Peruvian regulations.”

    It added there were plenty of Peruvian authorities monitoring the port’s activities, including police forces, environmental regulators and customs officials.

    The ruling issued Jan. 29 by a lower court judge orders Peruvian authorities to refrain from exercising “powers of regulation, supervision, oversight and sanction” over the port in Chancay.

    The regulator, Ositran, which has oversight over all of the country’s other major ports, said it would appeal the decision, arguing that there was no reason to exempt Cosco Shipping from the agency’s oversight.

    “(Cosco Shipping) would be the only company providing services to the public that could not be supervised,” Verónica Zambrano, president of Ositran, told a local radio station Wednesday.

    Although it’s privately owned, the Chancay Port covers 180 hectares (about 445 acres) of Peruvian territory, Zambrano added, making it subject to government efforts to monitor and enforce compliance with local user protection standards.

    Peru’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment. China’s Embassy in Peru did not respond to a request for comment.

  • Breezy Johnson gets engaged at Winter Olympics after boyfriend proposes at finish line

    Breezy Johnson is going to leave Milan Cortina with a medal and a ring.

    The Olympic downhill gold medalist was proposed to after her run in Thursday’s super-G event. Her boyfriend, Connor Watkins, popped the question at the base of the Cortina course, and she accepted.

    Watkins, decked out in a USA jacket, dropped to a knee in the finish area and held up a silver ring with a blue gem. Johnson became visibly emotional, said yes and kissed her new fiancé as the onlooking crowd cheered.

    Johnson’s engagement comes after she crashed in the super-G. She was one of more than a dozen skiers that did not finish.

    The 30-year-old alpine skier from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, earned a gold medal in the women’s downhill on Sunday and finished fourth in the women’s team combined with Mikaela Shiffrin.

  • Hermes CEO Says Epstein Was Financial Predator, Believes He Was a ‘Target’

    PARIS, Feb 12 (Reuters) – ⁠Hermes ⁠CEO Axel Dumas ⁠said he resisted multiple ​attempts by Jeffrey Epstein to ‌meet with him, saying ‌he believed he ⁠was ⁠a target of the financier who was ​a “financial predator” and approached the company in the middle of ​a takeover battle.

    “I think we were ⁠a ⁠target, I was ⁠a ​young CEO and we were in the ​middle ⁠of the LVMH affair. He was a financial predator,” Dumas said on a ⁠call with journalists on Thursday. “He already had a ⁠hateful reputation.”

    Files released by the U.S. Department of Justice show Epstein emailed Hermes multiple times asking for meetings with Dumas, as well as contacting the luxury brand ⁠to request they design the interior of his private jet. Hermes refused.

  • Queer Southeast Asian Ballroom Doc ’10s Across the Borders’ Boarded by Germany’s Rise and Shine (EXCLUSIVE)

    German sales agent and distributor Rise and Shine has picked up international sales rights and German-speaking territories’ distribution rights to “10s Across the Borders,” a documentary from first-time filmmaker Chan Sze-Wei, it was revealed at Berlin’s European Film Market.

    The documentary chronicles queer communities across Southeast Asia through a blend of observational footage, stylized dance sequences and a dynamic soundtrack. Filmed over seven years, the project tracks three community leaders in Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines as they draw from New York’s underground Ballroom culture to create spaces of empowerment for youth confronting transphobia, homophobia, HIV-stigma, sex work, colorism and poverty.

    “10s Across the Borders” premiered in the documentary program at the Busan International Film Festival after receiving the festival’s Asian Cinema Fund. The film earned a nomination for best documentary at the 2025 Asia Pacific Screen Awards and served as the gala screening for the awards ceremony.

    “I’m really looking forward to working with Rise and Shine, whose network and expertise with documentary will help ’10s Across the Borders’ to touch more audiences around the world,” Chan said.

    The company has built a reputation for handling quality creative documentaries from emerging filmmakers with distinctive narratives. Its slate includes Christian Frei’s Swiss documentary “BLAME (Bats, Politics and a Planet Out of Balance)” and Weronika Mliczewska’s “Child of Dust,” a Poland-Vietnam-Sweden-Czech Republic-Qatar co-production.

    Aurora Sun LaBeija, one of the film’s subjects and an associate producer on the project, noted the German ballroom community’s anticipation for the release. “I visit the German ballroom scene every year.   • Minnesota Timberwolves dominate Portland Trail Blazers 133-109; Randle scores 41

    Julius Randle had 41 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat Portland 133-109 on Wednesday night to end the Trail Blazers’ winning streak at three.

    Randall, who also had seven rebounds, capped his night with a windmill dunk that put the crowd at the Target Center on its feet. Jaden McDaniels added 21 points for the Timberwolves, playing their final game before the All-Star break.

    Jrue Holiday scored 23 points for the Trail Blazers, who trailed by 28 points and were hurt by 25 turnovers. Scoot Henderson, playing just his third game back since missing the first half of the season because of a hamstring injury, finished with 18 points.

    Minnesota scoring leader Anthony Edwards was listed as questionable going into the game because of an illness but he started and finished with 14 points.

    Minnesota was coming off a 138-116 win at home over Atlanta that stopped a two-game skid.

    McDaniels’ floating jumper pushed Minnesota’s lead to 50-38 midway through the second quarter. McDaniels had 15 points in the opening half and the Timberwolves led 61-51 at the break.

    Edwards and Julius Randle hit back-to-back 3-pointers to go up 73-59 in the third quarter. Rudy Gobert dunked to cap a 16-2 run and gave the Timberwolves a 79-59 lead.

    Portland ended the third quarter on a 10-3 run to close to 96-82 but couldn’t find a rally down the stretch. All-Star Deni Avdija struggled with 11 points.

    The Blazers were without Shaedon Sharpe, who missed the third straight game with a left calf strain.

    Before Wednesday’s game, the NBA fined Timberwolves big man Naz Reid and Atlanta Hawks forward Mouhamed Gueye $35,000 apiece for their roles in a jersey-grabbing tussle.

    Both players were given technical fouls and ejected with 11:52 left in the fourth quarter Monday after Gueye pushed Reid from behind, drawing a foul. Reid approached Gueye, the players grabbed each other’s jerseys and struggled before being separated by officials, coaches and teammates. The Timberwolves won 138-116.

    Vaccaro said the union is seeking smaller class sizes, better working conditions, fully paid health benefits and higher pay.

    SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Natomas teachers are preparing to strike if a new contract is not reached with the district, after the Natomas Teachers Association said 98% of its members approved a strike authorization.

    Union leaders say they are pushing for smaller class sizes, better student services, and more competitive pay to keep teachers from leaving the district. The superintendent says those demands do not match the district’s financial reality and could lead to cuts that affect students.

    For Natomas Unified teachers, the push comes after rallies and growing frustration during negotiations.

    Nico Vaccaro, president of the Natomas Teachers Association, said negotiations over the past year have led to a breaking point.

    “We are serious about having our demands met,” said Vaccaro. “This is a culmination of years of people quite frankly being fed up with their working conditions and having to struggle to make ends meet.”

    Vaccaro said aside from seeking smaller class sizes and better working conditions, the union is seeking fully paid health benefits and higher pay. State Department of Education 2024-25 data shows the average Natomas teacher salary is near $90,931, below the state average of $103,552 and below Sacramento City Unified at $109,230.

    “They have healthy finances. They have a current retention crisis right now,” said Vaccaro. “We are not asking them to drain their reserves. There’s a way for them to reprioritized their money and they should be able to figure it out.”

    District leaders see the situation differently. Natomas Unified Superintendent Dr. Robyn Castillo said during a board meeting that while the district values teachers, the union’s proposals could force cuts to student programs.

    “These demands mean real cuts to athletics, college and career services and our international baccalaureate program and other support services,” said Dr. Castillo.

    Castillo also defended the district’s reserves, saying they are required and necessary to keep schools operating.

    “The district is required to maintain a nine percent reserve; to put this in perspective, our district’s reserve would be fully spent in about a full month and a half just to meet our payroll,” said Castillo. “We remain committed to working towards fair and sustainable agreement, but that requires proposals grounded in local realities and a genuine effort to reach a resolution.”

    The next step is scheduled for next Friday, when both sides enter fact-finding, a required process after negotiations have stalled. Arguments will be heard and a report will be released. If there is still no agreement, the union can strike.

    During the Board meeting, the district also said enrollment for next school year is projected to stay flat and it is not expecting to lay off any teachers.

  • After affirmative action: Four takeaways — and puzzles — from college admissions data

    Most people believed that the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision to end affirmative action in higher education admissions would cause a big drop in Black and Hispanic enrollment at the nation’s top colleges. What happened is actually more complicated.

    Overall, more Black and Hispanic students enrolled in four-year universities in fall 2024 than in fall 2023. But in nearly all highly selective private and public colleges — the 85 that accept 25 percent or fewer applicants — Black enrollment declined or remained flat; the same was true of Hispanic enrollment at more than half of those institutions. 

    Public flagships, typically the most selective public universities in their state, experienced a 6 percent increase in the enrollment of Black and Hispanic first-year students. Yet at 20 of the 50 flagships, Black student enrollment fell or flatlined, and Hispanic student enrollment fell or essentially stayed the same at 16. 

    Opponents of affirmative action argued the change would lead to merit-based admissions but a new study found that high-scoring students from underrepresented minority groups were less likely to enroll in highly selective colleges in the fall of 2024 than in the previous year. Instead, those students “cascaded” into less selective colleges, which generally have lower graduation rates and postgraduate earnings.

    When President Donald Trump won re-election, he further increased pressure on universities to disregard race and ethnicity in admissions. 

    “Many institutions have over-corrected and over-complied in all sorts of ways in response to threats from the Trump administration,” said Shaun Harper, a provost professor of education, public policy, and business at the University of Southern California and a leading scholar of enrollment trends. 

    Harper and other experts argue that emerging enrollment shifts may be a harbinger of things to come. Hechinger reporters analyzed the new federal data to look for changes in first-year student enrollment. Below are some notable takeaways.

    1. Highly selective schools saw a large drop in Black first-year students and a smaller decrease for Hispanic students.

    • The nation’s 85 highly selective universities, which include 71 private and 14 public institutions, reported an 18 percent drop in Black students, to roughly 8,200 from nearly 10,000 in 2023. 
    • Among those colleges, 17 reported at least a 40 percent decline in Black enrollment (Hispanic students experienced similarly sized declines at five colleges). 
    • Hispanic student enrollment decreased 4 percent, dipping to 19,000 from nearly 20,000.
    • Meanwhile, Asian student enrollment increased by 2 percent, whereas white student enrollment increased by 1 percent.

    2. While many thought white men might gain an advantage under new admissions rules, their numbers remained essentially flat at private, highly selective colleges, while Black and Hispanic women had especially large decreases.

    • The number of Black women entering private, highly selective institutions plunged 27 percent, compared with a 23 percent drop for Black men. Enrollment of Hispanic women dipped 12 percent, while Hispanic men experienced an 8 percent drop. 
    • Among 71 private, highly selective colleges, only 72 more white male students enrolled in 2024 than in the previous fall. (White women increased by 479 students at those colleges.) 

    Highly selective colleges enrolled some 132,000 first-year students in 2024, a fraction of the 1.6 million incoming students nationwide. Experts see a reversal of gains in a decades-long battle to increase the number of Black students, particularly at these elite institutions— whose graduates tend to move into higher-paying and more influential careers. Theymake up a disproportionate share of U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, Fortune 500 CEOs and U.S. senators.

    “Truly, it only takes about five to 10 years of an institution backsliding and changing its philosophy to really affect the next generation of who those leaders are,” said Eddie R. Cole, a history and education professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.

    3. State flagships, selective and otherwise, have a mission to offer state residents a high-quality, affordable education. Their incoming student enrollment figures varied widely. 

    • Black student enrollment nationwide increased by 6 percent in 2024, compared with 4 percent the previous year, but at 20 of the 50 flagships, the number of Black students declined or remained essentially flat.
    • Hispanic student enrollment increased by 6.4 percent at all flagships, compared with an 8.6 percent increase the year before.
    • Puzzling, perhaps: The six biggest drops in Hispanic students were scattered around the country, in Alabama, California, Iowa, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

    Many flagships post high graduation rates. State and local leaders more often hail from flagships than elite private colleges. 

    Despite small gains in the overall number of Black students on some campuses, these students are still significantly underrepresented in many cases. 

    At the University of Mississippi, for example, the percentage of Black students remains lower than it was five years prior. Ole Miss has long been one of the least representative flagships for Black students in the country. The percentage of first-year Black students there grew to about 8.5 percent from 7 percent in 2023, in a state where nearly half of high school graduates are Black. 

    Hispanic enrollment at many flagship institutions has been climbing since 2019, reflecting increases in the number of Hispanic residents and high school graduates in many states. However, that trend was reversed at a dozen flagships, including Pennsylvania State University and the University of California, Berkeley. 

    Penn State is one of several flagships that experienced drops in enrollment for both Black and Hispanic incoming students. After getting close to reflecting the Hispanic share of the state’s high school graduates in recent years, enrollment decreased by 255 Hispanic students. 

    Berkeley’s decline was less significant: 138 fewer students. But it halts several years of increasing Hispanic enrollment. It is puzzling, given that California banned affirmative action in admissions decades ago, so the national change shouldn’t have had an impact. 

    4. A huge number of students declined to report their race 

    Students are not required to share their race with colleges, but historically almost all have done so. That may be changing: The number of admitted students declining to state their race at highly selective colleges shot up by 64 percent in a single year, an increase of about 2,300 students.

    In fact, just 16 of the 85 highly selective private and public universities — most notably the University of Southern California — are responsible for three-fourths of that increase. 

    Harper, who is studying how and when students report their race and ethnicity, said that students may be receiving mixed messages about this. 

    “I think the answer is hiding in plain sight: that the Supreme Court decision signals to them that reporting their race would actually be a disadvantage, as opposed to any version of an advantage,” Harper said.

    Looking ahead

    Overall, experts expressed caution about drawing too many conclusions from a single year of data. Byeongdon Oh, a sociology professor at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute, has studied widening racial inequality in higher education from the 1980s to the 2010s. He said he’s working on a more rigorous analysis that could consider additional factors behind the enrollment shifts, such as the pandemic’s impact on college-going.

    The roll neck’s triumphant resurgence is all part of a re-evaluation of the decade taste apparently forgot. “The seventies trend that we’ve seen coming through recently has made the roll neck a must-have knitwear shape for the season,” says James Lawrence, head of menswear design at ASOS. “Look for jewel tones and wear them underneath shirts [or suede jackets] for a truly retro look.”

    This design isn’t just a no-brainer for its form and function, it’ll pair well with everything in your wardrobe too. Aim for a mid-weight weave for maximum usage then wear with a suit and Chelsea boots to switch up your routine work look. Go casual on the weekend by teaming with slim-fit jeans, trainers and a wool overcoat.

    The Cable Knit Jumper

    If the cable knit jumper was good enough for fishermen on choppy seas, then quite frankly, we fancy our chances wearing one on the way back from the pub. The cable knit may have been edited and repurposed time and time again, but essentially you need to look out for the three Cs: crew neck, chunky and cream (although other colours look ace, too).

    Don’t try to pigeon hole the cable knit crew-neck though, it won’t stay in its lane and it’s all the better for it. “This design works well for all ages and styles, thanks to the sheer volume of choice available,” says says Damien Paul, head menswear buyer at MatchesFashion. Insulating and durable, a cable knit makes for a smart winter wardrobe investment. Decent options are found at all price points so whether you’re skint or splurging you can cop a cable knit.

    Wearing one is a doddle, too. It’s one of those heroic menswear pieces that can be chucked on with jeans and trainers or dressed up with a shirt, tailored trousers and monk-straps. Don’t try to go athleisure with it, though: when jogging bottoms are recruited the cable knit starts emitting walk of shame vibes.

    The Cardigan

    Once the unofficial uniform of America’s college elite, thankfully the shawl neck men’s cardigan has gone global, meaning you don’t need an eye-wateringly high IQ to wear one. Wearing a cardigan, at least a standard issue one, can have a tendency to get a bit geriatric in the wrong hands, but you’ll have no such issue with a shawl collar.

    Play to this preppy design’s strengths by teaming a navy version with a Breton T-shirt, slim tan chinos and black penny loafers.     The Graphic Knit

    While we’ll always be fanboys of pared-back and versatile knitwear, your bog-standard grey, navy and black sweatshirts aren’t likely to make menswear headlines. Luckily, minimalism’s grip on the way men dress has eased and an explosion of inventive knits have hit the market – attention seeking has never looked so good, with patterns, motifs and slogans all trending.

    If you’re apprehensive about giving loud knitwear a spot in your line-up this season, rest assured that it’s been thoroughly road-tested by the likes of Ryan Gosling and Donald Glover. Their verdict (and ours): it works.

    It’s not just pattern that gets our enthusiastic seal of approval though, brands like Coach, Sandro and Masion Kitsune have shown that cartoony, graphic designs are just as appealing when you’re in double digits as they were as a five-year-old.

    Don’t discount fluffy designs either, going furry will stand you in good stead in a sea of lacklustre knits. “Fluffy yarns instantly make a somewhat basic crew jumper into something special that can be worn in numerous ways, from smart to street,” says Lawrence. Plus if you’re lucky, the right people will want to touch you.

    The golden rule for wearing an interest knit? Keep the rest of your outfit simple. Black is your safest bet. Recruiting black jeans, boots and a leather jacket will let your knit speak for itself and save you from looking like you’re trying to be random AF.

    The Oversized Jumper

    When the weather’s grim outside, bigger is most definitely better when it comes to knits. More good news, too: an oversized jumper will mask a multitude of sins, meaning if you’ve given the gym one too many swerves you can still look perfectly presentable.

    Don’t take the oversized trend too literally though: two sizes up does not an oversized jumper make. The best oversized jumpers feel clearly designed. Look for shoulder seams that fall lower, and voluminous sleeves and hems that drop but retain their shape.

    An oversized jumper can be used for experimental winter layering, with a roll neck underneath or cropped jacket over the top, edging your layering game into advanced territory. Alternatively, team with contrasting slim jeans for a relaxed look, or go full-throttle mod and wear with a thick, green parka and Chelsea boots.     Polo shirts, even the knitted ones, are usually reserved for spring and summer but they deserve a spot in your rotation all year long. As well as boasting easy layering, a fine thread of mid-century elegance runs through the style, one that lends knitted polos well to dressed-down tailoring.

    The Merino Crew-Neck

    The V-Neck Sweater

    V-neck jumpers once fell into one of two opposing camps. They were either the centerpiece of boring 9-5 uniforms, as uninspiring as strip-lit offices, or statement clothing favored by Gucci types and capital-L Lads from the early noughties who wore theirs down to the navel.

    Fortunately, menswear has since found a happy medium.
