  • Bill Clinton to testify today before House committee investigating Epstein’s ties

    [ad_1]

Former President Bill Clinton is set to face questions Friday from members of the Republican-led House Oversight Committee about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, making him the first sitting or former president to testify before members of Congress in over 40 years.

Clinton will be deposed in a closed-door setting one day after the committee questioned his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for around six hours about what she knew about Epstein and co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell.

Committee chair James Comer, R-Ky., said Thursday that he expected the former president’s deposition to take “even longer.” The meeting is taking place in Chappaqua, New York, where the Clintons have a house.

The Clintons told the committee in sworn declarations last month that they had “no personal knowledge” of any “criminal activities” by Epstein or Maxwell.

Clinton has said she has no recollection of ever having met Epstein, but Bill Clinton has acknowledged he flew on his plane in 2002 and 2003 while he was traveling internationally for the Clinton Foundation. In his declaration, Clinton said Epstein “offered a plane that was big enough to accommodate me, my staff and my U.S. Secret Service detail, in support of visiting the Foundation’s philanthropic work.”

While President Donald Trump has accused Clinton of having taken dozens of trips to Epstein’s island in the Caribbean, Clinton said in his declaration that he was never there. White House chief of staff Susie Wiles said in an interview with Vanity Fair last year that Trump “was wrong about that.”

Emails by Epstein the Justice Department released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act also indicated that Clinton did not go to the island, and Maxwell said in an interview with a top Justice Department official last year that he had never been there.

“I do not recall speaking to Mr. Epstein for more than a decade prior to his 2019 arrest” on sex trafficking charges, Clinton’s declaration said. Epstein, who pleaded guilty in Florida to state charges of soliciting a minor in 2008, died in jail while he was awaiting trial on federal charges. Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking charges in 2021 and is serving a 20-year prison sentence.

Files related to the Epstein probes that have been released to date include numerous pictures of Bill Clinton with Epstein and Maxwell. In some of the photos, Clinton is shown in a hot tub, swimming in a pool with Maxwell and sitting at a table with a woman sitting on his leg.

The pictures are undated, and it’s unclear where they were taken. None suggest any wrongdoing.

The Oversight Committee in August subpoenaed the Clintons and several former top Justice Department officials to testify about Epstein. After months of back and forth, the former first couple agreed to testify as the House was moving toward voting on contempt resolutions for the Clintons.

Democrats in the House of Representative released 19 images, including photos of Jeffrey Epstein with presidents Trump and Clinton, Ghislaine Maxwell, billionaire Bill Gates, film director Woody Allen and conservative firebrand Steve Bannon. NBC New York’s Jonathan Dienst reports.

It’s very rare for a sitting or former president to appear before members of Congress. The last to do so was former President Gerald R. Ford in 1983, when he testified before a Senate subcommittee about planning for the bicentennial of the Constitution.

Ford also answered questions from Congress as president, appearing before a House subcommittee in 1974 to testify about his pardon of Richard M. Nixon, his predecessor.

The Democratic-led House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol subpoenaed Trump to testify in 2022. Trump challenged the subpoena, with his then-lawyer David Warrington, now the White House counsel, saying in a statement, “Long held precedent and practice maintain that separation of powers prohibits Congress from compelling a President to testify before it.”

The committee withdrew the subpoena before it shut down at the end of 2022.

Democratic members of the Oversight Committee have said its move against Bill Clinton sets a new standard — and one that should apply to the current president.

“This committee has now set a new precedent about talking to presidents and former presidents, and we’re demanding immediately that we ask President Trump to testify in front of our committee and be deposed in front of Oversight Republicans and Democrats,” the panel’s top Democrat, Rep. Robert Garcia of California, said Thursday. “And that should happen immediately.”

In her opening statement Thursday, Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, accused the committee of focusing on her and her husband “in order to distract attention from President Trump’s actions and cover them up despite legitimate calls for answers.”

“If this committee is serious about learning the truth about Epstein’s trafficking crimes, it would not rely on press gaggles to get answers from our current president on his involvement; it would ask him directly under oath about the tens of thousands of times he shows up in the Epstein files,” she said.

Trump, who had a falling-out with Epstein before he was first charged criminally in 2006, has denied any wrongdoing, and authorities have not accused him of any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein. In November, Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Epstein’s “involvement and relationship with Bill Clinton” and other Democrats. The status of that investigation is unclear.

Asked this month about Clinton’s upcoming deposition, Trump said: “I think it’s a shame, to be honest. I always liked him.”

  • Pope Leo XIV cautions priests against AI reliance in homilies, urges continuous study, community connection

    [ad_1]

The pope urged priests to resist using AI to prepare homilies and to genuinely connect with communities and their peers.

VATICAN CITY, — Pope Leo XIV urged priests not to fall into the “temptation” of using artificial intelligence to prepare their homilies during a conversation with the clergy of the Diocese of Rome on Thursday.

The closed-door meeting, which the Vatican News described as an “open and sincere one,” consisted of the pope giving an address, then answering questions from the clergy.

During the session, the pope encouraged priests to understand the first step of pastoral work, which he said was “truly knowing the community where I am called to serve.”

This turned into a conversation about the use of AI and internet use.

“Like all the muscles in the body, if we do not use them, if we do not move them, they die,” he said. “The brain needs to be used, so our intelligence must also be exercised a little so as not to lose this capacity.”

“To give a homily is to share faith,” he added, and AI “will never be able to share faith.”

He also encouraged the clergy that seeking “illusion on the internet, on TikTok,” through likes and attention cannot replace authentic spiritual connection.

Pope Leo urged his listeners to continue learning and studying to counteract reliance on and temptation of AI.

“Study in our life must be permanent, continuous. When I hear someone tell me — this is true, a priest told me this — ‘I have not opened a book since I left the seminary,’” he said. “My goodness, I thought, how sad.”

He also said studying and learning could be done alongside companions or a group of friends who can “reflect together.”

His warnings about the tech came as the Vatican plans to debut a translation system — assisted by artificial intelligence — to allow attendees to follow liturgical celebrations in St. Peter’s Basilica in 60 languages live.

  • Panamanian investigators remove documents from offices of co

    [ad_1]

PANAMA CITY — Panamanian investigators carried documents Thursday out of offices belonging to a Hong Kong-owned company that operated ports at either end of the Panama Canal until its concession was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court last month.

Public prosecutor Azael Samaniego, of the anti-corruption office, told local media outlets that visits were made to three offices of the Panama Ports Company in Panama City and that the Panama Maritime Authority and investigators from the National Directorate of Judicial Investigation also participated. The Panama Ports Company is the local subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison.

Samaniego said his office had information pointing to the possible commission of a crime, but he did not specify what the crime could be. He said an investigation was in its early stages.

The Panama Ports Company did not respond to requests for comment, nor did Panamanian law enforcement agencies.

The investigation comes days after the Maritime Authority seized the Balboa and Cristobal ports from the Panama Ports Company. The company has previously rejected the court’s ruling and the Chinese government has accused Panama’s government of bowing to United States pressure.

The ports, which have been operated by the company since 1997, became embroiled in a legal dispute after getting caught in the middle of the U.S. and China’s competition for influence in the region.

The Trump administration objected to the ports being controlled by a Chinese company and accused China of running the canal, something both Panama and China deny.

  • An injury scare had a Providence goalie in net for the Bruins on Thursday

    [ad_1]

    Boston Bruins

“I’m just glad I didn’t screw it up.”

Michael DiPietro was pressed into action for Thursday’s win over Columbus. John Tlumacki/Globe Staff (sports)

Michael DiPietro was quick with a retort on Thursday when asked if he thought Bruins starting goalie Joonas Korpisalo was going to return to Boston’s home game against Columbus.

“He better,” the 26-year-old goalie said with a laugh after Boston’s eventual 4-2 win.

After all, Korpisalo’s brief injury scare against the Blue Jackets seemingly threw Boston’s entire goalie grouping out of sorts in the club’s first regular-season game in over three weeks.

Marco Sturm had both of his usual starting goalies available on Thursday in Jeremy Swayman and Korpisalo. But Boston’s head coach opted to give Swayman — fresh off of celebrating an Olympic gold medal with Team USA — a few more days to practice before getting a start.

As such, Korpisalo got the nod against Columbus. DiPietro — an emergency recall from the Providence Bruins who had skated several times with Boston during the Olympic break — was on hand as the backup.

“Just give him another good practice,” Strum said of keeping Swayman off the ice Thursday. “[Wednesday] was not really a practice. He just went out and was happy to be at the rink. Today will be a good practice and [Friday] will be a good practice. And it’s an afternoon game [Saturday vs. Philadelphia], so there’s a lot more to it and we just want to make sure we do the right thing.”

Sturm’s augmented goalie duo was eventually tested a little over six minutes into the second period, with Blue Jackets winger Miles Wood barreling over Korpisalo in the crease. The 31-year-old goalie appeared shaken on the play, with Wood whistled for goaltender interference.

Shortly before play resumed, Korpisalo was pulled from the game by the concussion spotter.

“It’s league protocol. It’s a pretty big bump,” Korpisalo said of getting taken from the game. “So I can understand that.”

For the first time since 2022, DiPietro was back in an NHL net — pressed into service as Boston went on the man advantage.

DiPietro had little time to warm up, with Bruins forward Mikey Eyssimont doing his part by firing a few pucks in against him before play resumed.

“Just breathing,” DiPietro said of his approach after going into the game. “Dialing it back in and just taking it one puck at a time and just always being ready.”

Ultimately, DiPietro was only needed for 6:03 of ice time — stopping two shots before Korpisalo returned to the ice. During that stretch, DiPietro negated one shorthanded chance by Columbus, while Morgan Geekie eventually gave Boston a 2-1 lead with a power-play tally.

“I’m just glad I didn’t screw it up,” DiPietro said. “Made a couple saves and held it down until Korpi was ready to go back in.”

While DiPietro stood tall in his limited reps, Korpisalo locked things down the rest of the way — stopping 36 of the 38 shots that came his way in the win.

Sturm had plenty of praise for Korpisalo, who has posted a .923 save percentage over his last eight games.

But he also offered up a stick tap for DiPietro — who was named AHL Goalie of the Year in 2024-25 with Providence.

While the promising goalie awaits his next opportunity for NHL reps, he has continued to dominate with the P-Bruins, going 22-6-0 so far this season against AHL competition with a .938 save percentage.

“Korpi was unbelievable today,” Sturm said. “Glad he came back right away, from the Olympics. Didn’t waste any time. Wanted to be in practice. I thought that the last two days were very important for him, just to be back on the ice and having a real practice again. And, yeah he was great. And Mikey, what a story. … Good for Mikey.

“I mean, this guy has been rock-solid all along. And believe it or not, that little stretch, he made some key saves. We felt very good about it. Both goalies were outstanding.”

  • Family of Minneapolis brothers killed by cousin says their deaths were preventable:

    [ad_1]

A Minneapolis family is struggling to make sense of a tragedy that has left them heartbroken.

Family tells WCCO 14-year-old Xavier Barnett and 23-year-old Akwame Stewart were killed Monday.

The brothers were very different, but equally loved. Barnett was a good student and athlete. Stewart was a painter, creative and thoughtful. Two brothers, loved and full of promise, gone.

Police say the accused shooter is their cousin, 23-year-old Eddie Duncan.

Court records show Duncan was released on bail Monday on charges of fleeing law enforcement and possession of a gun modified with an “auto sear switch.”

Court records also show Duncan was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation, but not until next month, on March 24.

Deasia Freeman, Barnett and Stewart’s sister, says this loss could have been prevented.

“They all failed us. We got two innocent lives gone for no reason. Didn’t do nothing to nobody,” Freeman said.

Family members say the system and Duncan’s family let them down.

Freeman says Duncan’s family saw the warning signs and still bailed him out

“If you knew this man was thinking like this, y’all should have kept him in there and he should not even have bail,” she said.

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office says they noted Duncan was a public safety risk and asked for a high bail, much higher than a typical request.

“In Minnesota, there is a constitutional right to bail, and the bail amount is set by the Court. Our office noted a public safety risk with Mr. Duncan and asked the judge to set bail at $70,000, or $35,000 with conditions; both of which are higher than we would typically request in this scenario. The judge set bail in that amount. Mr. Duncan posted $35,000 bail with conditions of release, as is allowed under the Minnesota Constitution, and was released from custody. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by yesterday’s violence. This was a terrible tragedy for this family and our community,” a spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said.

For Freeman and her family, the hardest part isn’t just the legal process but living each day without their brothers.

Even in the heartbreak, she says the memories of the good days, the laughter and love they shared will carry them through.

“I wish I could get just one more phone call from them asking me where I’m at,” Freeman said as tears rolled down her face.

Court records confirm Duncan left the scene of the crime and fled to nearby Brooklyn Center. There, a search warrant says Duncan “fired a gun at officers, striking two squads,” when police arrived. That’s when officers returned fire, shooting and killing him.

Three officers have been placed on critical incident leave as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension leads the investigation into Duncan’s fatal shooting.

  • Castle Rock to begin wildfire mitigation work at Metzler Family Open Space

    [ad_1]

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — The Town of Castle Rock will begin wildfire mitigation work next week as an unusually warm and dry February has heightened concerns about critical fire risk across Colorado.

The town, with the help of Colorado State Forest Service, will target roughly 23 acres of timbered open space on the southeast side of Metzler Family Open Space.

About 150 trees have been marked for removal, along with thick brush and low branches that could help a fire spread.

Castle Rock Fire Chief Norris Croom walked the property with Denver7 Thursday and explained the dry conditions make the work urgent.

“You look at this, and this is all dead and dry, and so without that moisture, fire is going to carry rapidly,” Croom said.

    Denver7

Norris Croom, Fire Chief at Castle Rock Fire & Rescue Dept.

Crews will also remove low-hanging branches — what fire officials call ladder fuels — trimming trees to prevent a fire from climbing into the tree canopy.

The work will also address trees infected by mountain pine beetles as part of a broader effort to improve forest health.

“So really, we’re doing mitigation, forest health and beetle kill mitigation all the same time,” Croom said.

With the open space sitting in close proximity to homes, the effort represents one step the town can take — but residents say protecting communities from wildfire is a shared responsibility.

Denver7 met Sammy Beveridge, who was enjoying the trails at Metzler Family Open Space Thursday afternoon.

She welcomed the mild weather but said the dry conditions have her on edge.

“This year might be a little scarier than some of the past ones, just because of how dry it’s been,” Beveridge said.

She added that even small actions by residents can make a meaningful difference.

“Even if it’s just a couple branches here and there, it’s going to make a huge difference,” Beveridge said.

The mitigation work at Metzler Family Open Space is expected to take about a month.

The town said crews will be visible in the area during daylight hours, beginning at 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

The open space will remain accessible; however, due to tree felling and vegetation removal activities and equipment, portions of the trails will be closed throughout the project. Closures include the eastern part of the Red Loop as well as the Crowfoot Connector.

  • Warner Bros. Discovery deems Paramount’s takeover bid superior to Netflix deal

    [ad_1]

HOLLYWOOD — Netflix is declining to raise its offer to buy Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio and streaming business, in a stunning move that effectively puts Paramount in a position to take over the fellow storied Hollywood giant.

On Thursday, after Warner’s board announced that Skydance-owned Paramount’s offer was superior to the agreement it had previously struck with Netflix, the streaming giant said the new price that would be required to buy Warner would make it a deal that is “no longer financially attractive.”

Unlike Netflix’s bid, Paramount wants all of Warner’s operations, including networks like CNN and Discovery. That would put CNN under the same roof as Paramount’s CBS and combine two of Hollywood’s last five remaining studios.

The owner of HBO Max, DC Studios and popular titles like “Harry Potter” had backed Netflix’s proposal for months. But after Skydance-owned Paramount upped its rival bid for the entire company to $31 per share, in addition to other revisions, Warner’s board on Thursday said that the offer “constitutes a ‘company superior proposal.’”

A Paramount buyout Warner’s business would vastly reshape Hollywood and the wider media landscape. Paramount’s CBS has seen significant editorial shifts, notably with the installation of Free Press founder Bari Weiss at CBS News, under new Skydance ownership. And if Paramount’s acquisition of Warner is successful, many expect the reach of those changes to only grow.

A Paramount-Warner combo would also combine two of Hollywood’s five legacy studios that remain today, in addition to their theatrical channels. Beyond “Harry Potter,” Warner movies like “Superman,” “Barbie,” and “One Battle After Another” – as well as hit TV series like “The White Lotus” and “Succession” – would join Paramount’s content library.

Today, Paramount’s lineup of titles include “Top Gun,” “Titanic” and “The Godfather.” And beyond CBS, it owns networks like MTV and Nickelodeon, as well as the Paramount+ streaming service.

Executives at Paramount have argued that merging will be good for consumers and the wider industry. But lawmakers and entertainment trade groups have sounded the alarm – warning that a Warner takeover would only further consolidate power in an industry already run by just a few major players. Critics say that could result in job losses, less diversity in filmmaking and potentially more headaches for consumers who are facing rising costs of streaming subscriptions as is.

Combined, that raises tremendous antitrust concerns. The U.S. Department of Justice has already initiated reviews, and other countries are expected to do so, too.

Netflix, Warner and Paramount have spent the last couple of months in a heated, public back and forth over whose deal has a better regulatory path – and offers more value for Warner shareholders. Thursday’s announcement arrived shortly after Paramount upped the ante on its offer.

Beyond increasing its proposed purchase price for Warner, the company also agreed to a regulatory termination fee of $7 billion. And Paramount pledged to move up a previously-promised “ticking fee.” The company initially said it would pay 25 cents per share for every quarter the deal drags on past the end of the year. Now it’s agreed to pay that amount if the deal doesn’t go through by the end of September, Warner said.

But Paramount is taking on billions of dollars in debt to finance its offer. And David Ellison’s father, Oracle founder Larry Ellison, is heavily backing the bid for his son’s company. Foreign sovereign wealth funds have also provided equity for the offer, drawing scrutiny.

The Ellisons also have a close relationship with President Donald Trump – bringing more politics into question. Trump previously made unprecedented suggestions about his involvement in seeing a deal through, before walking back those statements and maintaining that regulatory approval will be up to the Justice Department.

The push to acquire Warner also arrives just months after Skydance closed its own buyout of Paramount – in a contentious merger approved just weeks after the company agreed to pay the president $16 million to settle a lawsuit over editing at CBS’ “60 Minutes” program. Still, Trump has continued to publicly lash out at Paramount and “60 Minutes” since.

  • RHOBH Recap: Rachel Opens Up About Her Ex Rodger and Their Downfall as Dorit’s Spending Sparks Concern From Kyle, Plus Erika Gets Emotional in Therapy, and Sutton Dishes on Ex Christian’s New Romance

    [ad_1]

On this episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Dorit‘s spending and Rachel‘s partying.  The Hamptons is doing a great job of bringing people together through wine, shopping, and dancing.  Back on the west coast, Erika opens up about her impending trials, Bozoma gets confirmation that Keely is her person, and  Sutton is left wondering if she should reinvent herself as Sutton Brown.

Over in the Hamptons, Dorit checks in with her daughter, who seems absolutely appalled to learn her mom flew commercial.  Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree… PK has the kids while Dorit is grasping for a hot girl summer and while all she wants to do is bash him, she holds her tongue for the sake of her kids, and plays nice while on the phone.

The night before proved to be a good one, as Rachel is hungover and exhausted.  Only Kyle is bright eyed, since she left at a normal time and remained sober. In an effort to cure said hangover, Dorit, Kyle, and Rachel head out to shop.  Dorit clearly got the spend memo- she basically cleans out the store with her $4,589.50 purchases. In an embarrassing moment, her card gets declined, but Dorit claims it was merely fraud protection, considering she is all the way on the east coast.  Sure.

Post shopping, Rachel has planned a nice little pre-game-like wine night with her family so that Kyle and Dorit can learn more about who Rachel really is.  While they prep, Kyle takes a FaceTime call from Boz, who, admittedly, is having some serious FOMO.  Kyle and Boz seem to be connecting more this year, which is refreshing.

Kyle shares that things between her and Dorit have gotten better since being in the Hamptons, but Dorit’s behavior has been odd.  According to Kyle, Dorit has been acting a little bit scattered, “manic,” or is “OCD because of anxiety?” Boz wants Kyle to be careful the way she talks about Dorit’s personality, especially with this impending divorce. However, Boz knows that Dorit has a looming financial burden of divorce ahead of her, and perhaps a conversation needs to happen with Dorit to help her focus on the important stuff.

Sutton meets with Jennifer Tilly in Malibu for an oceanside lunch. Sutton reflects on when she rented a house here 10 years ago and Jennifer reflects on who Sutton was 10 years ago. Sutton led a seemingly perfect life, with a seemingly perfect husband, but the more Jennifer looked, the more she saw cracks in their relationship.

Sutton’s ex has a new girlfriend, who also happened to be a friend of Sutton’s, which…complicates things and certainly adds a layer of betrayal.  Sutton was shocked to learn of her ex’s new girlfriend and had to learn of the romance from her son. With the annulment and the emotions that come with it, Sutton has been trying to put on a brave face. It has been hard, but the more she thinks about it, the more she is ready to move from Stracke to Brown.

Erika’s therapist makes a house visit. Erika opens up the upcoming trial- the one with the bankruptcy trustee. She also shares that she has a $10 million tax bill that Tom left her with. Erika is tired of it all and talks about how “the now sucks.”

Erika tells her therapist how she met up with an abused Denise Richards and goes on to say that she finally opened up to some of her friends about the abuse that happened to her last year.  The shame surrounding it and the need to call in police, when her own son is an officer, is what kept Erika quiet all this time.  She was carrying around the incident in shame and her therapist is glad to hear that Erika is talking about it now.

Erika states how lost she feels in life and how it seems like she is merely “treading water” in survival mode. Her therapist explains that Erika needs to embrace life, rather than fight it, because this is it: good, bad, and ugly.

Clearly Rachel’s family is on Dorit-time because they arrive over an hour late.  Kyle is awe that Rachel has both of her parents still alive and makes it clear how lucky Rachel is to have them in her life.  Dorit, caught up in her own world, obsessing over what to wear, is also late.

When she finally makes her grand entrance and meets Rachel’s parents and family, they talk about estranged marriages.  It becomes hard for Rachel because she knows just how much her family loved her ex, but he is not the same person he used to be.

Over in San Diego, Boz, her boyfriend, Keely, and her daughter head out to dinner. They discuss the fertility journey and the disappointment. If this next round does not work, Boz worries about “what ifs,” considering how much Keely wants a baby…what if it does not happen? Keely promises that no matter what, he still wants to marry Boz and she realizes that she needs to trust he will not grow to resent her down the road should she not be able to have his baby.

As the night wears on in the Hamptons, Kyle, Dorit, and Rachel head out to dinner. We learn that exactly one year ago, Rachel’s entire life broke up. She “split open” after she got into a fight with her ex and cried more than she ever cried before. Rachel explains that her ex told her about his affair and this was the catalyst that upset her so much that particular weekend one year ago.

She believes that her ex told her about it to hurt her and to get a reaction out of her. According to Rachel, he was a secure person up until about 7 years ago. She goes on to give examples and talks about how the one time she fooled around with a model prior to their engagement, her ex found out about it and proposed the next day.

In the end, people are allowed to change and Rachel is grateful her life unfolded the way it did.  They toast to a great weekend in the Hamptons.  Not only did they learn more about the life of Rachel Zoe, but Kyle and Dorit seem to be in a much better place…for now.

  • Pentagon official lashes out at Anthropic as talks break down:

    [ad_1]

The U.S. military’s partnership with artificial intelligence firm Anthropic is teetering on the edge of collapse as the company and a top Pentagon official trade barbs on the eve of a deadline to reach a deal.

The Pentagon has given Anthropic until Friday at 5:01 p.m. to either let the military use the company’s AI model for “all lawful purposes” or risk losing a lucrative Pentagon contract. The AI startup has sought guardrails that explicitly bar its powerful Claude model from being used to conduct mass surveillance of Americans or carry out military operations on its own.

The Pentagon’s chief technology officer Emil Michael told CBS News on Thursday that the military has “made some very good concessions” in order to make a deal. Anthropic quickly suggested the military’s concessions were inadequate, leading Michael to call the company’s chief executive a “liar.”

In response to Anthropic’s concerns, Michael told CBS News the Defense Department had offered to “put it in writing that we’re specifically acknowledging” federal laws that restrict the military from surveilling Americans. He also said the military offered language “specifically acknowledging these policies that have been in place for years at the Pentagon regarding autonomous weapons.” And he said the military invited Anthropic to participate in its AI ethics board.

Asked why the military will not specifically put in writing that Anthropic’s model can’t be used for mass surveillance of Americans or to make final targeting decisions without human involvement, Michael said those uses of AI are already barred by the law and by Pentagon policies. He also said the military does not use AI to power fully autonomous weapons.

“At some level, you have to trust your military to do the right thing,” said Michael.

“But we do have to be prepared for the future. We do have to be prepared for what China is doing,” Michael said, referring to how U.S. adversaries use AI. “So we’ll never say that we’re not going to be able to defend ourselves in writing to a company.”

An Anthropic spokesperson said Thursday that new contract language it received overnight from the Pentagon “made virtually no progress on preventing Claude’s use for mass surveillance of Americans or in fully autonomous weapons.”

“New language framed as compromise was paired with legalese that would allow those safeguards to be disregarded at will,” the company said.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in a separate statement Thursday that the Pentagon’s threats to cut off its contracts “do not change our position: we cannot in good conscience accede to their request.” He added that “we hope they reconsider.”

Late Thursday, Michael responded to Anthropic’s statement with a post on X calling Amodei a “liar” with a “God-complex.”

“He wants nothing more than to try to personally control the US Military and is ok putting our nation’s safety at risk,” Michael wrote.

If the military and Anthropic do not reach a deal by Friday’s deadline, the military plans to cut off its partnership with the company and designate it a supply chain risk, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said earlier Thursday. Officials are also considering invoking the Defense Production Act to make Anthropic adhere to the military’s requests, sources told CBS News.

Michael did not confirm to CBS News that the Defense Production Act could be used, but he said that “no company is going to take out any software that’s being used in this department until we have an alternative.” Michael added that he’s working on partnerships with alternative AI firms.

At risk for Anthropic is its status as the only AI company to have its model deployed on the Pentagon’s classified networks, through a partnership with data analytics giant Palantir. Anthropic was awarded a $200 million contract with the Defense Department last summer to deploy its AI capabilities to advance national security.

The feud has highlighted a broader disagreement among policymakers and tech firms over how best to mitigate the potential risks posed by AI.

Amodei has long been vocal about the potential dangers of unconstrained AI, and has made a focus on safety and transparency a core part of his company’s identity. He’s also backed what he calls “sensible AI regulation.”

In the case of Anthropic’s Pentagon contract, Amodei said Thursday that “frontier AI systems are simply not reliable enough to power fully autonomous weapons,” and that autonomous weapons “cannot be relied upon to exercise the critical judgment that our highly trained, professional troops exhibit every day.”

He also said he’s concerned AI systems could pose a surveillance risk by piecing together “scattered, individually innocuous data into a comprehensive picture of any person’s life.”

The Trump administration, meanwhile, has argued that stringent AI regulations could stifle innovation and make it harder for the American AI industry to compete, and has warned against what it calls “woke” AI models. In a speech last month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pledged, “we will not employ AI models that won’t allow you to fight wars.”

Michael told CBS News that the disagreement is partially ideological, “and the way I describe that ideology is: they’re afraid of the power of AI.”

He said that the military is only interested in using AI lawfully, and is looking to “treat it like any other technology” — which means that if it isn’t used for lawful purposes, “that’s on us.”

“You can’t put the rules and the policies of the United States military and the government in the hands of one private company,” said Michael.

Kawasaki Motors Philippines unveiled its 2026 Leisure Bike lineup through an immersive brand experience titled “The Art of Power,” held on February 25, 2026, at Whitespace Manila in Makati City.

Designed as a curated exhibition rather than a traditional high-adrenaline launch, the event positioned each motorcycle as a statement of presence, craftsmanship, and controlled power. Revealed through cinematic storytelling, live string quartet performances, and choreographed lighting, the showcase reflected Kawasaki’s evolving approach to performance, an approach where engineering and artistry move as one.

Beyond the immersive presentation, the evening marked the official introduction of the 2026 Kawasaki Leisure Bike models.

    The Apex Performer: Ninja ZX-10R

At the forefront is the Ninja ZX-10R, Kawasaki’s flagship superbike and the pinnacle of its racing DNA. Derived from feedback from the Kawasaki Racing Team in the World Superbike Championship, the 2026 model introduces significant aerodynamic upgrades.

Large integrated winglets generate 25% more downforce, complemented by a repositioned RAM Air duct for improved intake performance. A new Ninja-inspired styling direction signals a return to its bloodline, while high-spec Brembo braking components, Showa Balance Free suspension systems, an Öhlins steering damper, and a TFT instrument panel with smartphone connectivity reinforce its position as a track-dominating machine engineered for precision at every speed.

The Highly Anticipated Adventurer: KLE500 & KLE500 SE

Making its much-awaited local debut are the KLE500 and its SE variant, the KLE500SE, Kawasaki’s response to the growing demand for lightweight adventure rally motorcycles. First unveiled globally during the 2025 EICMA, the model has quickly gained attention among rally and adventure enthusiasts.

    2026 KLE500 (Standard)

Powered by a 451cc fuel-injected parallel twin engine, the KLE500 features an Assist & Slipper Clutch, selectable ABS, KYB suspension, spoke wheels, and a high-tensile steel trellis frame designed for versatility across terrain. Smartphone connectivity via the Kawasaki Rideology app and a 16-liter fuel tank further position it as a capable long-distance explorer.

    2026 KLE 500SE

For riders seeking elevated touring readiness, the KLE500 SE adds premium enhancements, including hand guards, a larger windshield, extended carrying capacity with three-case capability, a full color TFT instrument panel, and additional Ergo-Fit adjustments, transforming the platform into a refined, adventure-ready companion.

    The Fearless Icon: Z1100

Leading the Z family into 2026 is the Z1100, the highly anticipated evolution of the Z1000 lineage. Embodying Kawasaki’s Sugomi design philosophy, the Z1100 pairs aggressive styling with substantial performance upgrades.

The new model features increased engine displacement, the addition of an Electronic Throttle Valve System, advanced riding aids, a TFT instrument panel with smartphone connectivity, as well as premium components such as Brembo front brakes and Öhlins suspension, further reinforcing its identity as the fearless flagship of the Z series.

    Established Icons, Evolved: Ninja 650 & Z650S

Completing the line up are the enduring favorites of the middleweight segment.

    2026 Ninja 650

The 2026 Ninja 650, long regarded as an accessible gateway into big bike performance, retains its approachable 649cc parallel twin engine with refreshed color and graphics for the new model year.

    2026 Z650S

Meanwhile, the Z650S introduces updated Sugomi-inspired styling cues that draw stronger visual influence from its larger Z siblings, sharpening its aggressive aesthetic while maintaining its everyday versatility.

Attended by dealer partners, executives, and media representatives nationwide, “The Art of Power” underscored Kawasaki’s commitment to delivering motorcycles that balance engineering innovation with commanding design.

  • Sewage spill concerns escalate: DC Water assures residents things are getting better

    [ad_1]

Concerned residents gathered at Walt Whitman High School as DC Water outlined efforts to tackle a major Potomac sewage spill.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — About 300 people packed Thursday’s meeting at Walt Whitman High School to hear the very latest about the Potomac sewage spill.

DC Water worked to calm concerns – sharing updates on water testing and repairs.

“We understand the gravity of this situation,” said David Gadis, DC Water.

At the meeting, DC Water confirmed crews are still removing rock from the collapse site before the next phase of repairs can begin.

“The pipe has been dry and we’ve been doing that excavation. There’s a little bit more rock in there. Crews continue to work. They were in there yesterday and overnight,” said Matt Brown, Chief Operating Officer.

The agency also confirmed it’s working with an environmental consultant as they map out the cleanup.

Officials say water testing continues daily – and emphasized Thursday that drinking water is still safe and testing shows bacteria levels are decreasing.

A chief health officer with Montgomery County told a coach concerned about upcoming water-related sports that he would not “encourage kids to be splashing around.”

“I would not encourage kids to be splashing around with their colleagues in a way that I know is common on crew teams. Taking a little extra precaution because we know the levels are elevated. Don’t think we need to avoid the water – the levels have been consistent that it seems to be safe to be able to do things,” said Dr. Kisha Davis.

Dozens of community members had questions during the Q&A portion of the meeting.

Some asked for additional testing in more areas, more long-term testing, and more accountability for DC Water.

“This is a major pollution problem. Major impact on the river. There will be watermen who will be put out of work this year,” said Dean Naujoks, Patomac Riverkeeper.

  • Hillary Clinton Epstein Deposition Statement

    [ad_1]

Hillary Clinton spoke publicly on Thursday after spending more than six hours in a closed-door deposition with the Republican-led House Oversight Committee in Chappaqua, New York, as part of its ongoing investigation into the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

    Video

Afterward, Clinton said she “answered every one of their questions as fully as I could based on what I knew,” and reiterated her longstanding denials of any meaningful connection to Epstein.

“I never met Jeffrey Epstein, never had any connection or communication with him,” she told reporters, adding that she did not recall encountering him and never flew on his plane or visited any of his properties.

Clinton also confirmed that she had known Maxwell only casually as an acquaintance, noting that Maxwell attended her daughter’s wedding as a guest of someone else.

The deposition came after weeks of tense negotiations, subpoenas, and threats of contempt of Congress against Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who is also expected to testify on Friday. Republicans say they are probing connections between powerful public figures and Epstein after the Justice Department released millions of pages of files under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Clinton criticized the committee’s approach, saying it focused on repeated questions and even unrelated topics, and on political motivations rather than evidence.

No allegations of wrongdoing have been made against Clinton in connection with Epstein’s crimes, and the committee has not released the deposition transcript.

  • HISD moves forward with plan to close 12 campuses after lengthy and tense public meeting

    [ad_1]

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — After a lengthy and tense meeting, the Houston Independent School District is moving forward with a plan to close 12 of its campuses, citing declining enrollment and increasing maintenance costs.

In a meeting on Thursday, HISD’s Board of Managers decided to close the campuses in a unanimous 9-0 vote.

SEE ALSO: HISD parents brace for school closures, while some experts said more may be necessary

According to HISD, the district will implement a comprehensive transition plan to assist affected students, families, and staff. This involves direct outreach to affected families to discuss student placements, staff reassignment, transportation, and ongoing community engagement for a smooth transition into the 2026-2027 school year, HISD said.

Dozens of parents and community members showed up to speak out against the closures, many saying the decision was sudden and lacked sufficient community input.

After the first public comment period, several district officials presented findings, including enrollment data and facilities conditions, that they said justified the closures.

Then came a second public comment period, where more parents and community members spoke out.

A person was escorted from the building after standing on a podium during an HISD meeting on school closures after her time to speak ran out.

During that time, one person was escorted from the building after standing on a podium after her time to speak ran out. The board declared a recess but soon returned.

Throughout the meeting, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles addressed the audience, sternly telling them to maintain decorum.

District officials said they held more than 20 meetings with parents of affected schools before the appointed board’s decision.

Officials added that contracted staff at affected schools will not be laid off and will be guaranteed a job at a different location in the district pending regular contract renewals.

Miles previously released a statement when the district first revealed its plan to close the 12 schools:

“I understand this news is difficult. Schools are more than buildings. They are places filled with history, relationships, and pride. This decision was not made lightly, and our focus remains on ensuring every student has access to a strong, supportive, and opportunity-rich learning environment.”

This is a list of the schools HISD said it will close:

    • NQ Henderson Elementary School
    • Port Houston Elementary School
    • Franklin Elementary School
    • Briscoe Elementary School

For more on the closures, visit HISD’s webpage.

  • Hurricanes fight past Tampa Bay in return game after Olympics

    [ad_1]

The sprint for the finish line in the regular season started Thursday for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Winter Olympics are over, the Canes had three players return from Italy with Olympic medals, and it was finally back to NHL business at the Lenovo Center.

“Getting back to game speed, that’s a little concern for me, no matter who you’re playing,” Canes coach Rod Brind’Amour said Thursday morning.

The Canes were playing the Tampa Bay Lightning and got back to game speed quickly, scoring three times in the first seven minutes of the first period. But it would be a fight to the finish between the two best teams in the Eastern Conference as the Canes finally emerged with a 5-4 victory.

The Lightning (38-15-4), playing a second game without head coach Jon Cooper, clawed back from an early 3-0 deficit and had the score tied 4-4 going into the third period.

Sebastian Aho’s power-play goal at 7:17 of the third would stand up as the winner, although the final three minutes had the Lightning pulling goalie Jonas Johansson for a sixth attacker and the Canes somehow missing the empty net four or five times.

Aho said he felt “pretty gassed” after the Olympics — the center did not skate Thursday morning — but got his power-play shot from the right side through traffic with Jordan Staal in front of the net.

“Good win. Obviously, we wanted to start the right way, and we were able to win against a good hockey team,” Aho said. “We wanted the two points, and we got it.”

Before the game, the Olympians were recognized, including Jake Guentzel (Team USA) and Brandon Hagel (Canada) of the Lightning.

Nikolaj Ehlers and goalie Frederik Andersen, who played for Team Denmark in Milan, received nice ovations. Aho, who helped Finland to a bronze medal, got a big hand. It was a bit louder for the Canes’ Seth Jarvis, who was named to Team Canada when the Lightning’s Brayden Point was injured and unable to make the trip.

But the loudest reception, as expected, was for Canes defenseman Jaccob Slavin, who brought back a gold medal after the United States’ thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Canada on Sunday.

That brought about loud “USA! USA!” chants. Soon, the puck dropped for the Canes’ first game since Feb. 5, when Carolina took a 2-0 road win over the New York Rangers before the pause for the Olympics.

Among the Olympians, Aho, Ehlers and Jarvis would score for the Canes (37-15-6), and Hagel for the Lightning. Slavin did his part as well in the defensive zone and slammed Nikita Kucherov into the boards with a thunderous hit with about a minute to play in regulation.

The Canes’ first three goals came in rapid succession. Ehlers ripped a shot from the left wing 1:43 into the game and Logan Stankoven, on his 23rd birthday, scored off the rush 73 seconds later for his first goal in 13 games.

Taylor Hall, whose give-and-go pass led to Stankoven’s score, then converted a nifty Jackson Blake pass for a tap-in goal. That made it 3-0 Canes just 6:41 into the opening period – the fastest Carolina had scored three goals to start a game in more than eight years.

But the Lightning, 20-1-1 in their last 22 games before Thursday, can also score quickly, and did. Before the first period ended, Hagel and Kucherov scored 35 seconds apart — Hagel on a shot from the left circle and Kucherov from the right — as the Canes lost coverage in their zone.

The Lightning were in the second game of a back-to-back, having beaten Toronto 4-2 on Wednesday in their first game after the Olympic break. In that game, Point had two goals and assists; Kucherov had a goal and two assists.

Tampa’s Cooper missed a second game after the death of his father, Robert. Cooper, who coached Team Canada in Milan, was replaced by assistant coach Rob Zettler and should return for the next game.

Canes goalie Brandon Bussi won an eighth straight game but had an adventurous night in net. He left the net and badly mishandled a puck in the first period. He came out of the net again in the second period, only to have the puck take a wicked carom off the boards and come inches from crossing the goal line.

But Bussi also had some quality stops, denying a Kucherov one-timer in the first and then stoning Yanni Gourde on a breakaway in the second. The Canes helped him out by allowing just six shots in the third as Bussi improved his record to 24-3-1.

“I liked our game in the third, not giving up much,” Brind’Amour said. “That was the key. We were giving up too many good looks for them, but in the third I thought we settled down a little bit and got to our game.”
