‘TEMPTATION’ PREVIEW 🧚 (01.22.23)
TEMPTATION takes TXT back to their Neverland roots after surviving the chaos of entering adulthood. Now that they’ve been reborn as found men instead of lost boys, are they ready to face responsibility head on, or will they be tempted to postpone their growth and linger in the freedom of Neverland?
‘THE NAME CHAPTER’ CONCEPT TRAILER 🪟 (12.02.22)
The Name Chapter concept trailer opens with TXT once again being tempted by the Devil, as he promises them the power of flight to escape reality. The Devil is deceitful and takes on many forms (a blue and green-eyed cat, for example). This time, the Devil is playing the role of a Peter Pan figure that tries to lure the boys to Neverland. Because Magic Island has been destroyed, and the group has been relying on their own imaginations to escape the real world with little success, the temptation is real.
You’ll notice at the beginning of the video that Yeonjun doesn’t have a shadow like the other members do, suggesting that he is playing the role of Wendy. As Yeonjun (Wendy) tries to resist the Devil’s (Peter’s) tempting offer, Yeonjun eventually gives in as the rest of the group follow suit. The Devil then offers the group a potion of everlasting youth (a reference to the German legend Faust) as they become his puppets and happily fly away into the night.
As the Devil traps TXT in a dark fantasy of temptation, Beomgyu seems to be aware of what is happening to them (like in Blue Hour) and tries to snap the other members out of it as they dance with their dark sides. The group wakes up, seemingly free from the fantasy, as an earthquake hits. The group fully gives into temptation as they jump from the floating house at the 5:53 point in the concept trailer (reference to blue hour and the Magic Island music video), and plummet to Neverland.
‘SUGAR RUSH RIDE’ 🏝️ (01.26.23)
🎶 I can feel it I can’t resist it, that sweet devilish smile / You open my locked door so easily / Oh my, I see the stars, the devil said 🎶
The Sugar Rush Ride music video starts right where The Name Chapter concept trailer leaves off, as TXT fall from the sky into Neverland next to a crashed train (Magic Island) with the number 304 (their debut date) and the name Promise (Nap of a Star). The video carries many references to Peter Pan like the hangman’s tree, the mermaid lagoon, and the misty mountains as the members turn into lost boys covered in fairy dust and play around the (magic?) island.
Each member interacts with different temptations on the island – HueningKai is tempted by the trees, Soobin by water, Yeonjun by flowers, Taehyun by wind, and Beomgyu by butterflies. The butterfly has made many appearances throughout the lore (Frost, We Lost The Summer, and Nap of a Star) but this time they turn against Beomgyu and start attacking him, as he’s the one who’s truly aware that the sweet mirage they’re trapped in is really a lie.
As their dream starts to turn into a nightmare and HueningKai screams “Get away!”, the group snaps out of it and decides to return back to the real world. Rather than giving in to temptation and letting their escapism harm their friendship like in Eternity, TXT chooses to take responsibility for their actions and put their friendship first. With their newfound strength and awareness, it seems the boys are now ready to remember their True Names.
‘DEVIL BY THE WINDOW’ 👿 (02.21.23)
🎶 I met the devil by the window, traded my life / Temptation touched my tongue, spread the wings of desire / He’s whispering give up, don’t you put up a fight 🎶
While technically not an official music video, the Devil by the Window special performance video and song acts as a prequel to Sugar Rush Ride, and depicts the story of what happened to TXT during The Name Chapter concept trailer. This is a great example of how the group wraps their mythology around both their lyrics and choreography to paint a perfect picture. Peep the choreo references to possession and pentagrams as temptation takes over.
‘SUGAR RUSH RIDE’ (JAPANESE VERSION) 🦋 (06.27.23)
🎶 You’re so addictive, my veins full of sweets / The forbidden lines slowly fade away, this daze-like anemia / But I prefer it that way, every cell under my skin becomes more sensitive 🎶
The Japanese version of the Sugar Rush Ride music video acts as a Part 3 to the LO$ER=LO♡ER and Good Boy Gone Bad (Japanese Version) music videos as TXT struggle with the aftermath of getting caught by the police. The group is now on the run (Beomgyu still picking fights with that damn bike) and our bff the butterfly is back as it lures them to Neverland. This version is much trippier than the Korean version, and as things get weird the boys realize real lies and make a break for it.
During the dance scenes, you’ll notice that the group now have feathers in their socks instead of money like in Devil by the Window, representing the deal they made with the Devil in the concept trailer. The flying fish also makes an appearance, as HueningKai releases it, representing his acceptance of the real world and escaping the fantasy. As the video ends, the cuts on Yeonjun are still there, telling us that they actually are back in reality, as Taehyun bandages his wounds like in Run Away.
That concludes Phase 1 of The Name Chapter! It seems TXT have finally brushed the Devil off of their shoulder and are ready to face adulthood. Stay tuned for FREEFALL! Later 👋
