Evergreen Park senior Omarrion Evans started his football season with a 90-yard touchdown run that players dream about all summer long.
Evans beat a few Ag. Science defenders and exploded down the right sideline late in the third quarter on Thursday at Gately Stadium. It was the final score in the Mustangs’ 26-2 win against Ag. Science.
“[Evergreen Park coach Jim Ramazinksi] always says to keep running and use your feet and don’t let anybody tackle you,” Evans said. “I looked back [at the end of the run] and saw three bodies.”
Evans had five carries for 106 yards and caught a 49-yard TD pass from sophomore Brady Bruen.
“[Evans] came in last year as a transfer and was more of a defensive player,” Ramazinski said. “He really worked hard on his body and his speed and it showed with that 90-yard touchdown run. He has some burn.”
It was the first start for Bruen. He was the quarterback on the sophomore team last year and is relatively new to the position after playing offensive tackle in youth football.
“[Bruen] looked really good in certain spots,” Ramazinski said. “He knows he has to work on some things. One thing about him we know he is totally committed and he’s going to do everything he can to help us win.”
Bruen was 4 for 6 passing for 51 yards and one touchdown. He had 11 carries for 23 yards and opened the scoring with a 22-yard TD run in the first quarter.
“I was a little nervous coming in,” Bruen said. “But after I scored on the first drive everything settled and I got the hang of it.”
Ag. Science is breaking in a new offensive line and wasn’t able to get much going on the ground. Junior Trevon Williams had 11 carries for 49 yards and senior Maurice Bush had 15 carries for 31 yards.
Our guys were running to the ball and not missing too many tackles,” Ramazinski said. “We just played solid, fundamental team defense.”
Cyclones quarterback Braeden Gillie, a junior, was 9 for 22 passing for 99 yards with one interception.
Junior Jacob Ruvalcaba hauled down the interception for Evergreen Park. It was an important play. The Mustangs lead 20-2 and Ag. Science was on their 8-yard line and threatening to score.
“I was just able to see it coming my way and make a play,” Ruvalcaba said. “The defense all just did our jobs and it came together with that shutout today. We want to be tough and win every single play.”
Ag. Science scored on a safety in the second quarter. Cyclones senior Isaiah Bowman force Braun into a fumble and ball wound up in the end zone.
Ag. Science was 8-3 last season and advanced to the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Evergreen Park was 3-6.
“It feels so good to start the season with a win,” Ruvalcaba said. “Hopefully we can keep it going.”
