Police responded to a bank robbery on Response Road in Sacramento, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man was shot and killed by Sacramento police officers Thursday after a reported bank robbery near a shopping plaza across from Cal Expo Thursday, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Just before 4:30 p.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of Response Road for a report of a robbery in progress at a bank. Police said a man was reported to be armed inside the bank.

The man fled on foot before officers arrived. While responding to the call, officers spotted an individual matching the suspect’s description and pursued him, police said.

Officers saw the suspect was armed with a firearm, and an officer-involved shooting occurred, according to police.

Two officers fired their weapons, striking the suspect at least once, police said. Officers rendered medical aid until Sacramento Fire Department crews arrived.

Once fire crews arrived, they transported the suspect to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

No officers or community members were injured, police said. There was no immediate information on whether any bank employees were injured. Sacramento Police said officers later determined the suspect had an “Imitation firearm,” which means it isn’t capable of firing real ammunition.

The incident remains under investigation.

Exposition Boulevard was closed as officers collected evidence, police said.
