ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said scammers are sending text messages, voice messages, emails and direct mail to spread false information about the state’s inflation refund checks.
The scam claims New Yorkers must submit payment information to receive the money. They may ask you to submit bank account information or personal documents. New Yorkers are urged to be vigilant and report scams to the New York State tax department.
Eligible New Yorkers do not need to apply, sign up, or do anything to receive an inflation refund check. If you filed a tax return, are below the income thresholds, and no one else claimed you as a dependent, you will receive a check.
The state started mailing the checks to 8.2 million New York households on Friday, Sept. 26. Ranging up to $400, the checks are supposed to return a portion of the increased sales tax revenue the state collected as inflation drove up the cost of goods.
