New York City’s death toll from the recent stretch of extreme cold has risen to 19 after a man was found unresponsive on the street under the Manhattan Bridge Tuesday night, a City Hall official said.
The latest death brings the total number of people found dead outdoors during the cold spell to 19. An additional seven people died from hypothermia-related causes at private residences over the same period, City Hall said.
The city updated its count on Wednesday after the individual was found unresponsive on Tuesday evening. Officials did not release the person’s name or additional details.
“As Mayor Mamdani has said, the cold persists, but so does this city,” said Matthew Rauschenbach, a mayoral spokesperson. “Let’s keep looking out for one another. If you see someone in need, call 311.”
The prolonged stretch of frigid temperatures and snowfall prompted the city to enter a Code Blue on Jan. 19. A continuous Code Blue was issued on Jan. 31. The city exited Code Blue on Wednesday morning.
Officials said cold weather protocols will remain in place through the end of the week, including expanded outreach, increased warming center capacity and public service announcements coordinated with LinkNYC.
