NY officials condemn antisemitic graffiti at Brooklyn yeshiva

New York officials including Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul condemned the defacement of a Brooklyn yeshiva Wednesday after red swastikas were spray-painted onto the building.

Police said a security guard called around 6:30 a.m. to report the vandalism at Magen David Yeshivah on McDonald Avenue and Avenue S in Gravesend. The symbols were sprayed onto pillars and windows, according to photos shared on social media by Mamdani and Rep. Nicole Malliotakis.

Representatives for the yeshiva did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

Mamdani called the incident a “disgusting and heartbreaking act of antisemitism.”

“As Mayor, I will always stand steadfast with our Jewish neighbors to root the scourge of antisemitism out of our city,” he wrote on X.

Hochul said in her own post that the yeshiva was “one of several” Jewish sites defaced overnight with spray-painted swastikas. Neither she nor police immediately provided more information about the other locations, and NYPD officials did not have a description of a possible suspect.

The governor said state police were ready to help the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force with the investigation. New York Attorney General Letitia James also took to social media to speak out against the incident.

This is a developing story based on preliminary information and may be updated.
