The 2024 Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee last year was a celebration of all things Donald Trump, a four-day flurry of speeches by the MAGA faithful and Trump family members as well as a particularly baffling Kid Rock performance. But despite being only nine months into his second term as president, Trump is reportedly considering holding another national gathering for the Republican Party ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Democrats are apparently planning their own too.

In a Truth Social post shared Thursday, Trump first boasted about the Republican Party’s recent successes, claiming Republicans are “poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS.”

“We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper. The results are incredible, a record pace!!!” he wrote.

Then the president raised the possibility of bringing the party together again ahead of the 2026 midterm elections but provided no details about when or where the event might take place. “In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!” Trump said.

Notably, Trump’s out-of-the-blue announcement comes as leaders across the aisle are allegedly mulling a similar idea. Axios reported Wednesday that some Democratic officials are considering holding a party convention prior to the 2026 midterms with the goal of providing a national platform for key candidates in congressional and gubernatorial races across the country as well as a potential proving ground for prospective 2028 presidential candidates.

Per Axios, Democratic National Committee chairman Ken Martin raised the idea with party leaders this week in Minneapolis, but it’s too early to say whether a midterm convention will ultimately happen. The outlet reports that the Democratic Party had held smaller conventions both before and after midterm elections in the 1970s and 1980s, but later moved away from organizing such events.

Trump’s apparent interest in a party convention is another sign of the president’s intense focus on the 2026 midterm elections. In recent weeks, Trump has urged Republicans to take up aggressive redistricting efforts in their states with the goal of shoring up the party’s chances of keeping control of the House of Representatives. Last week, the Texas legislature officially passed a Republican-drawn map that prompted a weekslong standoff with Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to prevent its passage.
The Associated Press reports that Republican legislators from Indiana met with Trump in the Oval Office this week as he continues to pressure the wary lawmakers to try to redraw their state’s House districts.
