Novartis breaks ground on Research Triangle expansion

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Global drugmaker, Novartis, is committed to North Carolina by expanding in three sites in the Research Triangle.

“We know that this is an exceptional manufacturing hub and that’s what we will need,” said Victor Bultó, president of the US unit for Novartis.

Leaders broke ground Thursday at Novartis’ Durham facility that will be a part of the expansion in Durham and Morrisville. The expansion will span across more than 700,000 square feet between the existing campus and new facilities.

“It’s going to create 700 good paying jobs, jobs that will support families,” Governor Josh Stein said.

Stein was among the lineup of speakers, including FDA Commissioner Marty Makary.

“It’s a powerhouse of biotech and many other states envy what North Carolina has been able to achieve,” Makary said.

Makary said he wants to see American companies thrive. For North Carolina, it’s a win-win situation as the state continues to make gains in the life sciences sector.

Officials expect the expansion to boost the local economy.

“They could invest anywhere in the world,” Gov. Stein said. “We have the best workforce. And once you have, it starts building on itself and other companies see what we’ve got, and they want to be part of it.”

Novartis’ new manufacturing hub is anticipated to open in 2027-2028.
