Northampton event invites the community to explore and learn about instruments

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Northampton Community Music Center (NCMC) will host its second annual “Instrument Petting Zoo” on Tuesday, August 26.

The event, to be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., will offer attendees of all ages a chance to try out musical instruments and learn more about the center’s offerings ahead of the new school year.

Held at NCMC’s facility at 139 South Street, the free open house invites the community to explore a wide variety of instruments, including strings, woodwinds, percussion, pianos, brass, and rock guitars with hands-on guidance from NCMC teachers. Refreshments will be served, and staff will be available to answer questions about lessons, classes, and ensemble opportunities.

The event is a collaboration between NCMC and JFK Middle School, with Band Director Shelby Serio inviting incoming middle school students to attend and explore which instrument they might like to play in the school band.

NCMC will also highlight its New Horizons Band, led by Nancy Janoson, which offers adults, particularly retirees and seniors with limited or no formal music experience, the opportunity to learn concert band instruments and play ensemble music in a supportive setting.

Families with young children are encouraged to explore the Music Together program during the open house. Designed for children up to age five and their caregivers, the program promotes early childhood development and a lifelong love of music through playful and interactive learning.
