A Texas woman has been arrested more than 20 years after she left her newborn baby, called “Angel Baby Doe” by investigators, on the side of a road to die, authorities say.

A North Texas woman was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in prison in connection to the death of her newborn daughter 24 years ago, according to the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.
Shelby Ann Stotts pleaded guilty this week to leaving the newborn girl on the side of County Road 809 in November 2001, according to a news release.
Until 2023, the baby was unidentified, and referred to by the Johnson County community as “Angel Baby Doe,” according to the news release. In September 2023, a Houston-based DNA lab used samples taken from Stotts and the baby to link the two.
Investigators believe the girl was alive when Stotts abandoned her and died because Stotts did not clamp the umbilical cord after birth, the Star-Telegram previously reported. A man picking up cans along the road found the baby, loosely wrapped in a jacket, on the morning of Nov. 18, 2001.
The girl’s father, whose name was not released, delivered a victim impact statement in court, according to the release.
The father was never aware that Stotts was pregnant with his child, and only learned about her two years ago, officials said.
In the impact statement, the father named the baby girl Taryn Angel Moreno, officials said.
“This child was left nameless, bleeding, exposed to the elements, in short, left to die. But the good people of Johnson County opened their hearts to her, named her, provided her with a burial plot and headstone, gave her a funeral … and 24 years later, a Johnson County jury has given her justice,” Johnson County district attorney Timothy Good said. “This was a cold case, but the need for justice does not fade with the passage of time. We will always fight for and seek justice no matter how long it takes.”
