On an announcement on their website, the USDA blamed Senate Democrats for not funding the food stamp program. The alert said, “Bottom line, the well has run dry.”

Addressing the democrats, the alert said, “They can continue to hold out for healthcare,” on the official USDA website. “We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats.”

The SNAP program currently assists one in eight Americans in buying groceries. The new notice that federal food aid will not be released follows the Trump administration’s announcement that it would not tap around $5 billion in contingency funds to keep the benefits flowing.

Due to the government shutdown, the SNAP program will continue to be withheld until an agreement is reached between the democrats and republicans. The government shutdown, which began on Oct.1, has been at a standstill due to disagreement over extending expiring subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.

Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the National Guard and state volunteers are being deployed on a humanitarian mission to help food banks.

Newsom also said he is fast-tracking upwards of $80 million in state support ahead of funding delays.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
