Two firefighters who could have faced up to three years in prison for flooding a baseball field will get no time behind bars.
SILVER SPRING, Md. — Two Silver Spring firefighters accused of using high-velocity water cannons to unload gallons of water onto a baseball field won’t see any prison time.
Christopher Reilly and Alan Barnes could have faced up to three years in prison for flooding the field, which is used by the amateur baseball team the Thunderbolts.
On Friday, Reilly was acquitted. The charges against Barnes were dropped by prosecutors earlier on Friday.
The firefighters had apologized to the baseball team – which was forced to cancel at least one game because of the incident – in July.
According to court documents obtained at the time of the arrests, the firefighters were prompted to flood the field over frustration about balls hitting personal vehicles, the fire station, and department equipment.
Reilly reportedly sprayed the field for three minutes as Barnes stood beside the truck. The pair only stopped the water after being confronted by the team.
Both Barnes and Reilly were charged with malicious destruction of property valued $1000 and disorderly conduct.
