Sep. 4—Nighttime lane closures are planned this week and next on Interstate 65 in Morgan and Limestone counties as the Alabama Department of Transportation installs traffic camera poles for its expanding Intelligent Transportation System.
The $2.5 million advanced corridor management project, handled by contractor Ozark Safety Services, runs from Exit 334 at Alabama 67 in Priceville to Exit 354 at U.S. 31 in Athens. The work includes 84-foot-long concrete poles that will stand 70 feet above ground once installed.
Weather permitting, lane closures are scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. On Thursday night, closures will affect I-65 northbound near milepost 346 and a westbound lane on Alabama 304/Huntsville Brownsferry Road at Exit 347.
Additional nighttime installations are planned in Limestone County next week:
Tuesday: northbound at mileposts 349 and 353.
Wednesday: southbound at mileposts 352 and 354.
Sept. 11: near mileposts 343 and 344.
The project will add 11 new cameras on I-65, including one on an existing pole at Exit 340. Phillip Day, ALDOT’s North Region Traffic Systems Management and Operations coordinator, said the effort will nearly complete camera coverage between Priceville and Athens.
“They’ll significantly expand coverage,” Day said. “We will have cameras covering nearly the entirety of I-65 from Priceville to Athens.”
The project also calls for two new overhead dynamic message signs, two Road Weather Information System stations, and communication devices including radio and fiber optic cable. Once the cameras are operational, livestreams will be publicly available at algotraffic.com and on the ALGO Traffic app.
According to ALDOT, the cameras are used to detect and monitor roadway congestion and issues, helping the department coordinate with first responders. The agency said it does not record or store footage.
