Newsom orders removal of homeless encampments
[ad_1]
(FOX40.COM) — Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order Thursday commanding state agencies to begin removing homeless encampments,
The New York Times was the first to report on the order.
The order comes a month after the United States Supreme Court ruled that outdoor sleeping bans do not violate the Eighth Amendment.
The order instructs agencies to first clear encampments that pose a risk “imminent threat to life, health, safety or infrastructure.”
Agencies are to give at least 48 hours notice and help connect local outreach services with those being removed.
Property collected at sites will be stored by the state for at least 60 days.
Newsom does not have the power to make local governments follow his plan but the order says it “encourages” them to adopt similar policies.
In 2022 Newsom delayed $1 billion in homeless initiative funds for local governments because he did not agree with their approach to the issue.
