New Year’s Reception at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo

The Japanese Imperial Family joined Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako as they presided over the Ceremony of New Year’s Celebration at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on January 1st. This was the sixth New Year’s Reception of Emperor Naruhito’s Reign, with six separate Ceremonies.

The Emperor and Empress received greetings from the other members of Imperial Family; the Speaker and Vice-Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President and Vice-President of the House of Councillors; Diet members; the Prime Minister; Ministers of State; the Chief Justice and Justices of the Supreme Court; other government officials with Imperial attestation; Administrative Vice-Ministers of Ministries and Agencies and other leading figures of legislative, executive and judicial organs; prefectural governors and chairpersons of prefectural assemblies; and heads of diplomatic missions to Japan and their spouses.

The Emperor and Empress received greetings from the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Vice-President of the House of Councilors at the “New Year Celebration Ceremony” – Koichiro Tezuka in the “Matsu no Ma” of the Imperial Palace.  The Emperor said:

I am truly pleased to be able to celebrate the new year together. As the new year begins, I pray for the happiness of the people and the prosperity of the nation.”

Emperor Naruhito was in the Order of the Chrysanthemum and Empress Masako wore the Meiji Scroll Tiara and Imperial Diamond Rivières with the Order of the Precious Crown.

Crown Prince Akishino wore the Order of the Chrysanthemum and Crown Princess Kiko was wearing the Diamond Scroll Tiara and the Order of the Precious Crown.

Princess Aiko was wearing Princess Sayako’s Mikimoto Diamond Tiara and the Order of the Precious Crown.

Princess Tomohito wore her Mikimoto Tiara, Prince Hisahito wore the Order of the Chrysanthemum, and Princess Kako wore her Diamond Tiara.

Princess Akiko was wearing a new Diamond Tiara and Necklace, and Princess Yōko of Mikasa was in her Diamond Tiara.

Princess Takamado was wearing her Wedding Tiara, and Princess Tsuguko of Takamado was in her Diamond Tiara.
