The Institute for Social Research conducted the “Perceptions of Homelessness in the Greater Sacramento Region” survey to collect responses from 1,750 residents across six counties in the greater Sacramento region.

The institute reported that residents in the survey were asked questions about how much they see homelessness daily, and if they consider homelessness when they vote in state and local elections. Results showed prominent awareness from residents as well as active impact, with locals wanting to do something about homelessness in the area.

More than half of respondents reported seeing signs of homelessness almost daily in their communities. Among urban residents, 75% responded saying they see homelessness daily, according to the report.

The research institute revealed that 53% of voters said they considered homelessness when voting on local measures and propositions.

When referring to local elected officials, one resident remarked, “They throw around a lot of ideas, but I have not seen any of them actually happen,” expressing frustration with the lack of visible progress.

The report showed that 27% of the residents in the study have signed petitions, while 14% have contacted public officials, demonstrating civic engagement.

“These findings show that people across the region are not only aware of the homelessness crisis—they’re stepping up,” Shannon Williams, Executive Director of ISR, said. “From donating and volunteering to voting with this issue in mind, residents are demonstrating a commitment to being part of the solution.”

The ISR said it conducted the survey in order to provide local data for service organizations, agencies and elected officials working to address homelessness across the Sacramento region.

At noon on Sept. 18, a virtual community briefing will be held to share key findings and answer questions on this study.
