(KRON) — The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office just made it a lot easier for disgruntled residents to lodge complaints against its employees.

On Monday, The San Francisco Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and the Department for Police Accountability (DPA) launched a new case management and digital complaint system dedicated to receiving complaints about Sheriff’s employees, including police officers, and a complainant portal that allows complainants to follow up on their cases.

“A case management system is the foundation of a modern office that will allow us to effectively manage and track our work, efficiently analyze and report on our data, and significantly expand accessibility for the public to engage our services,” said Inaugural Inspector General Terry Wiley, who started his term this January.

The public can now officially file their complaints here. Complainants can also file a report regarding police misconduct through the DPA under these conditions:

  • Use of force causing injury or death.
  • Use of a weapon or control device.
  • Sexual Misconduct.
  • Pattern and practice of retaliation, harassment, or bias towards an inmate.
  • Reckless disregard for inmate health or safety.

Those trying to file a complaint on police misconduct can do so here.

In November 2020, voters passed Proposition D, creating the Sheriff’s Department Oversight Board and the Office of the Inspector General to provide independent oversight of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office, which includes the San Francisco Police Department.

“We are delighted that a product of our partnership with the OIG is a platform for complainants to register their complaints with clarity and confidence. Our mutual dedication to improving accessibility and accountability underscores our commitment to fostering trust between oversight agencies and the communities they serve,” said DPA’s Executive Director Paul David Henderson.
