Stafford County School Board names new elementary schools: Falls Run and Crow’s Nest, opening in 2026.

WASHINGTON — The Stafford County School Board has elected names for the two newest elementary schools. Soon, kids in the division will attend either Falls Run Elementary or Crow’s Nest Elementary schools. Both schools are scheduled to open for the 2026-2027 school year.

Every new school needs a mascot and school pride colors. Falls Run Elementary will be known as the Foxhounds, with purple, gold, and navy as their school colors. Of course, a crow’s nest needs some birds, so Crow’s Nest Elementary will be known as Blue Jays! Its school colors will be turquoise, navy, and lime.

How does the naming process work?

  1. Community Input
    1. A 30-day public comment period was open for suggestions on school names, colors, and mascots.
    2.  Suggestions can be submitted electronically.
  2. Committee Review
    1. A naming committee, appointed by the superintendent, reviews all suggestions.
    2. The committee consists of the school’s future principal, a School Board representative, parents, staff, students, and community members.
  3. Student Survey for Colors and Mascots
    1. Students zoned to attend the new schools had an opportunity to vote on school colors and mascots.
  4. Final Selection Process
    1. The committee recommends two name options and two sets of school colors and mascots to the superintendent.
    2. The School Board will review these recommendations, allow for public comment, and make a final decision.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Karen Bingham will serve as the principal of Falls Run Elementary. William “JR” Raybold will lead Crow’s Nest Elementary.

“Naming a school is about creating a place where children can see themselves and feel a part of something larger,” said Maureen Siegmund, Chair of the Stafford County School Board. “These names, mascots, and colors will help set the stage for welcoming communities where students can grow and thrive.”

There are guidelines for naming schools in Stafford.

  • Elementary Schools: Named after the street the school is on, a historical or current name of the area, or a Stafford County resident of historical significance.

  • Middle Schools: Named after a Stafford County educator who has made significant contributions and has been deceased for at least 10 years.

  • High Schools: Named after the street the school is on, a historical or current name of the area, or a Stafford County resident of historical significance.

  • Avoid Confusion: Names that could be mistaken for other schools in Stafford County or nearby areas should be avoided.
