The Statesville Police Department found 33-year-old Shelbie Smith dead on June 1.
STATESVILLE, N.C. — A mystery remains at a Statesville home after 33-year-old Shelbie Smith was found dead on June 1.
“You can’t wrap your head around it,” Cassie Smith, Shelbie’s mother, said.
She was just footsteps away from the person her mom said Shelbie Smith loved the most, her 4-year-old son Gunner.
“She loved that boy,” Cassie Smith said.
Cassie Smith said Gunter woke up and couldn’t find his mom and didn’t know what was going on.
“He may have seen her but he didn’t recognize that it was his mommy,” Cassie Smith said.
Shelbie Smith was found dead at her home on Hickory Avenue on June 1. The Statesville Police Department and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation were investigating her death, but no further information was released.
Cassie Smith said her daughter took her last breath that night. It’s a tragedy that still has her struggling to catch her breath.
“I know she’s gone but sometimes I’m still waiting for her to come around the corner,” Cassie Smith said.
As Cassie Smith continues to wait patiently for answers, she is sharing a message for single women who live alone.
“I just don’t think there’s enough caution, trust your women’s intuition or the hair on the back of your neck,” Cassie Smith said.
Cassie Smith said being on high alert could have possibly saved her daughter’s life, now a mom is left without a daughter and a 4-year-old is left clinging on to hope.
“How does any 4-year-old understand heaven or forever,” Cassie Smith said. “For a 4-year-old child it’s like, cool my mom is in heaven but I’ll see her next week.”
As the family continues to spread awareness, they’re asking for the community’s help to support Gunner.
WCNC Charlotte waiting to hear back from the Statesville Police Department for updates on the investigation.
