More yellow fever carrying mosquitoes found in Placer County

(FOX40.COM) — Another group of invasive and yellow fever carrying mosquitoes have been detected in Placer County, according to the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District.

On Wednesday, the vector control district shared that the Aedes aegypti mosquito was detected in the Rocklin neighborhood of Parker Whitney near Johnson-Springview Park.

This marks the second detection of the invasive mosquito within the county in less than a week after the vector control district said the mosquito was also detected in the Foothills-Junction area of Roseville.

Early on Thursday morning, the vector control district sprayed larvicide and adulticide in both neighborhoods with the hope of preventing the growth and spread of the potentially deadly mosquitos.

“Larval treatments use an EPA-registered biorational mosquito larvicide applied by a truck-mounted blower in an effort to treat any containers or other sources of standing water and prevent the emergence of adult invasive mosquitoes,” the vector control district wrote in a news release. “In addition, an EPA-registered mosquito adulticide will be applied in an ultra-low volume fog by truck to target adult mosquitoes.”

To reduce the risk of mosquitoes breeding on their property, residents can:
• Drain flower pots
• Fill tree holes and hollow bamboo stumps
• Remove discarded tires
• Refresh pet water bowls
• Dump plant saucers
• Store buckets inside
• Stock ponds with mosquitofish
• Eliminate tin cans
• Keep bird baths clean
• Cover rain barrels
• Clean out clogged gutters
• Maintain ornamental foundations
