CLEVELAND (WJW) — A water main break along a major route into the city of Cleveland caused more traffic tie-ups Wednesday morning.
The water main opened up last Thursday on the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway. Nearly a week later, the problem persists, causing traffic back-ups and detours.
For about a week, motorists navigated a strange detour off the exit at W. 45th and then right back onto the Shoreway.
On Wednesday, the Shoreway remained closed with a new detour from Lake Avenue to the W. 45th Street entrance.
Wednesday morning, FOX 8’s Patty Harken provided a bird’s-eye view of the water main break from SkyFOX as well as the traffic delays it was causing.
According to the water department, it’s a complicated issue to fix due to the water main’s size and location.
After five days of water on the road, Cleveland Water provided the following statement on Tuesday:
Cleveland Water staff have been actively working to address a leak on a 36-inch water main impacting the eastbound lanes of the Shoreway.
Crews are continuing to close additional valves in the area to control the flow of water to the leak without disrupting service to our customers. These valves are spread out in the surrounding neighborhoods and not in the immediate vicinity of where water has surfaced. This is a complex process due to the age of the main and the main’s proximity to our Garrett Morgan Treatment Plant, a water tower, and various other water mains.
There’s no estimate on when the problem will be fixed.
