While it’s unclear what caused the train cars to derail, more than a dozen cars appeared to be involved in the incident.

WEST ORANGE, Texas — Investigators are looking to determine the cause of a train derailment in Texas Friday night that caused more than a dozen cars to jump the track near West Orange.

A union Pacific train derailed sometime Friday night near State Highway 87, causing authorities to block off the roadway near the scene.

While it’s unclear what caused the train cars to derail, more than a dozen cars appeared to be involved in the incident. West Orange VFD Assistant Chief Simmie Gibson III confirmed to 12News that there are no leaks at this time from the derailed cars.

West Orange is a small Texas town with a population of fewer than 4,000 people. It sits directly next to the Louisiana border, about 105 miles from Houston.

It’s unclear exactly what the train was hauling, but it does not appear to be a commuter train carrying passengers.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
