Modesto Nuts say goodbye to decades long home at John Thurman Field

(FOX40.COM) — September 8, could be the last time the Modesto Nuts take the field at John Thurman Field, according to the City of Modesto.
After a period of negotiations, the City of Modesto and the owner of the Nuts, the Seattle Mariners, were unable to come to an agreement for a long-term lease extension.
“We’re disappointed we were unable to agree upon an extension,” said Nuts General Manager, Veronica Hernandez. “I know we and the city worked very hard to find common ground and unfortunately were unable to accomplish our goal.
The Nuts were originally founded as the Modesto Reds in 1946 and have seen the likes of Rickey Henderson, Jose Conseco, Mark McGwire, Jason Giambi and more play for the organization.
Following WWII, the Modesto Reds were one of the first teams to join the reincarnated California League.
“We are thankful for the legacy the Modesto Nuts leaves behind and we wish them the very best success in their future endeavors,” said Mayor Sue Zwahlen. “Negotiations can be very challenging, and we worked diligently over the last year with the Modesto Nuts to explore various solutions.”
In their time playing in Modesto the Nuts secured 10 league titles and four division titles, including a California League division championship title in 2023.
The current lease will expire on Sept. 30, marking the end to a nearly seven decade history of the Nuts playing at John Thurman Field.
With some 30 home games left there is still time to watch another Nuts game at John Thurman Field or maybe your first.
