Modesto man arrested after deadly attack on elderly couple in Murrieta

A Modesto man is accused of attacking a 70-year-old man and his wife at their home.

MURRIETA, Calif. — A Modesto man was put behind bars in connection to an attack on a 70-year-old man and his wife in Murrieta.

According to the Murrieta Police Department, the attack was reported on Nov. 5 at a home along Old Spring Road around 8:15 a.m.

The caller said an unknown person came inside the home and attacked both her and her husband, allegedly stabbing her in the head with a screwdriver while her husband was stabbed with a knife.

She reported that her husband appeared to be dead and that the suspect ran out the back door.

When police arrived, they confirmed the 70-year-old man was dead and arranged medical aid for the caller. 

After searching the neighborhood, police found a man matching the suspect’s description in a ravine behind a nearby home on Wild Flower Drive around 9 a.m.

Police said the man didn’t comply with officer commands and hid in nearby bushes.

According to police, a K-9 was deployed to help. The suspect was taken into custody and later identified as the homicide suspect, Manual Arturo Alvarez, 36 of Modesto. He was treated for injuries from the K-9 apprehension and arrested on suspicion of homicide and attempted homicide.
