The Cosmic Tones Research Trio

For fans of Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Dorothy Ashby

Cosmic Tones Research Trio—alto sax/composer Roman Norfleet, multi-instrumentalist Harlan Silverman, and pianist Kennedy Verrett—conjure astral jazz and healing tones with a sacred gospel framework. Direct descendents of 1960s and ’70s spiritual jazzists, these sonic channelers also host the restorative NTS show “Music for a Healing Earth,” a confluence of new age twinkling and cosmic exploration. It’s a soothing balm for the soul. The trio celebrates the release of their new, self-titled LP with a performance bookended by episodes of spiritual jazz giant, Alice Coltrane’s consciousness-expanding public access show, Eternity’s Pillar, as well as a short documentary executively produced by Norfleet, Gratitude to the Mystery, digging into the trio’s practice. Menopalooza #1 with Team Dresch and Party Witch

For fans of Franc, Tribe 8, Siouxsie Sioux

Featuring heavily in the influential 2017 documentary Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution, Olympia’s Team Dresch do not get nearly enough credit or recognition for what their music did for queers in the ’90s, and what their music continues to do for queers in 2025. They created a space by homos, for homos—especially dykes and lesbians—that didn’t exist before. This appearance is part of an event called Menopalooza, with a portion of ticket sales benefitting the forthcoming documentary Menopunks. Portland new wave-goth royalty, Party Witch, cast their spells over the crowd before TD tear it the fuck up. (Bunk Bar, 8pm, more info here, 21+)

Chaparelle / Jeffrey Silverstein

For fans of The Barbaras, Tammy & George, Austin Leonard Jones

Western Pleasure, the new album from Texas outfit Chaparelle, firmly situates the band as one of the truest and bluest country acts on the circuit. The vocal coupling of Zella Day and Jesse Woods allows both to showcase their strengths: Day with the subtle smoke at the periphery of her voice, and Woods’ easy croon swirl and flirt—bringing a blush to cheeks all over the country. Portland’s ambient country extraordinaire, Jeffrey Silverstein shoots straight (to our hearts) in the opening slot. (Wonder Ballroom, 8pm, more info here, all ages)

The Barbaras / Jesco Payne & The Painkillers

For fans of Sierra Ferrell, The Judds, Jenny Don’t & The Spurs

It’s a release party, y’all! The Barbaras are sharing their second album, Rollercoasters, with the world and it’s a doozy. The ups and downs and all-arounds of life and love come streaming through on the double-femme harmonies, the twang guitars, and the hilariously heartbreaking story telling of true cowpokes. This is one of the best country outfits on the West Coast, Portland is lucky to call them one of our own. Kentucky boy Jesco Payne rounds up his Painkillers for us to pop as an appetizer before The Barbs let us have it. (Showdown Saloon, 8pm, more info here, 21+)

Saturday, September 20 & Sunday, September 21

Grandaddy / Pedro The Lion

For fans of Sparklehorse, Jason Molina, Daniel Johnston

Touring behind the 25th anniversary of their sophomore LP, The Software Slump, Grandaddy is the kind of band that gives kids (and adults) inspiration to start making their own music with minimal gear and knowledge of music creation. Their perfectly rough compositions roll out in front of the listener as if the ’90s and early 2000s were a fever dream of lo-fi creativity—and weren’t they?—that’s been taken away from us by the endless march of techno-capitalism. Opening duties for both nights fall to fellow dream-weavers Pedro the Lion. Nostalgia awaits. (Revolution Hall, 8pm, more info here, all ages)

Anika / Lauren Early

For fans of Nico, Circuit Des Yeux, Kim Gordon

Neatly confining UK-born, Berlin-based artist Annika Henderson, AKA Anika, to one or two genres isn’t possible, and is perhaps beside the point. Henderson harnesses the low registers of her other-worldly vocal range to haunting effect. Her music is a fall afternoon in the PNW: Low skies, rain, sunshine, lingering summer warmth, and the foreboding chill of squaring up with deep winter. LA music girl, Lauren Early unleashes her noise-pop take on the archetypal singer-songwriter to start the concert off on the appropriate feets. (Holocene, 9pm, more info here, 21+)
