Melbourne high-rise climber Anthony Andolfo says ascent “worth it” – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

The Frenchman jailed for scaling a high-rise tower in Melbourne’s CBD last month without any safety equipment says the climb was still worth it, although he was surprised to be imprisoned for a week.

Anthony Andolfo told Nine News on Monday he would continue to solo free-climb towers around the world.

“Of course. Maybe not in Australia,” he said. “I can do it again in Australia, yes, [it’ll] maybe be more official.”

Andolfo, who spent his 30th birthday on remand, drew stunned spectators and emergency services when he climbed the facade of the Avani Melbourne Central Residences on A’Beckett Street about 7.50am on February 6.

Wearing a backpack and a GoPro, and using only climbing chalk, Andolfo reached the top of the 56-storey apartment building, where emergency services and police were waiting. He was handcuffed and led away to a police van.

Last month, his lawyer told the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court he was remorseful for his actions and the inconvenience caused to emergency services. Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt accepted he was unlikely to re-offend in Australia as his first significant time spent in custody was “sufficiently unpleasant”.

But on Monday, Andolfo, who departs for Panama on Tuesday, repeated what he told reporters when asked why he scaled the high-rise as police escorted from the apartment tower on February 6: “Because I can.”
