At long last, Mau P has released “Beats for the Underground,” a house anthem that mines the past to embed his signature in the dancefloor of the future.

We became willing captives to Mau P’s latest masterstroke, a heady tech house track with tinctures of vintage hip-hop grit. The rising Dutch superstar had been playing “Beats for the Underground” in his DJ sets for the entirety of 2023 as it grew into one of the year’s most anticipated dance tracks.

Driven by an intoxicating bassline that bubbles like molten gold, the song bottles the fizzing energy of the underground club scene and ensnares us in its cathartic grooves. Take a listen below.

Today’s release is a big moment for Mau P, who nabbed a pair of Electronic Dance Music Awards last year after releasing his breakout hit, “Drugs From Amsterdam.” Sharing a candid open letter with fans, he recalled memories of thankless years when he battled cruel whispers that his sound would never take hold in the industry.

“if u know me because of drugs from amsterdam u might think ive spawned out of nowhere and i have a secret hack,” he wrote. “truth is ive had my skin in the game for a while and ive been trying to make this thing work for YEARS… i could never believe why it wasn’t working for me and why i saw others succeed… the one thing i did was i kept going at it from all angles and i’m trying to tell u that u should too… u can actually do all of this too the only trick is to not stop.”

“It happened when it was meant to happen mate!” Calvin Harris commented. “And I know you’re just getting started.”

“Beats for the Underground” is out now via Repopulate Mars. You can find the new track on streaming platforms here.
