SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the country’s foreign minister were found dead at the site of a helicopter crash on Monday.
According to the Associated Press, the helicopter with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and eight other passengers crashed in the fog. At the moment there is no cause for the crash that fell in a mountainous area of the country.
The incident happened as the president was on the way back from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan. It took hours for rescuers to find the wreckage of the Bell 212 helicopter in Northwest Iran.
22News had a chance to speak with Congressman Richard Neal to see what this means for the country, “It certainly is a tumultuous time in the Middle East. I don’t think anybody has stepped forward yet with a full understanding of what happened but there might be a chance here, just a glimmer to reset some of these relationships and I think the Defense Department and the State Department will look at that as well.”
Mohammad Mokhber is now Iran’s interim president due to Raisi’s death. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani will serve as acting foreign minister.
