CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Many across western Massachusetts are looking to beat the heat this week as our first potential heatwave plays out.

To help people stay cool, local pools and cooling centers are open. Chicopee has at least 4 cooling centers for residents to utilize.

The following four cooling centers will be opening through Friday afternoon with two closed on Wednesday, June 19 in commemoration of Juneteenth:

  • Chicopee Police Department Lobby: Open 24 hours, Monday through Friday
  • RiverMills Center on Aging: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM; Closed on Wednesday, June 19th
  • C3 Units in Willimansett and Chicopee Center: Open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Chicopee Public Library: 9AM-9PM. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday. Friday 9AM-5PM, closed Wednesday, June 19th

The city also has splash pads. One place that was crowded Tuesday was Rivers Park with many taking advantage of the free entry.

For many kids in the area this was their first day on summer break. They told 22News what they enjoy most about coming to the splash pad.

“The sprinklers and have fun,” said Antonio Lopez.

“I get to spend time with my family,” added Kendalyz Lopez of Chicopee.

Other City’s public spray parks, include Lincoln Grove, Dana, Szot, Garrity Grove, Williams, Wisniowski, and Ray Ash Parks. All are open from 11AM-7PM seven days a week.
