A Mansfield father pleaded guilty and was sentenced after his 2-year-old daughter died from fentanyl poisoning, prosecutors said.

Micheal Reed, 28, pleaded guilty to injury to a child causing serious bodily injury and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, the Tarrant County District Attorney office said on Monday.

Two-year-old Nevaeh Meshelle Reed’s death was ruled homicide due to fentanyl toxicity, the DA’s office said.

The toddler was visiting her father, Reed, at an apartment at 1751 Towne Crossing Blvd. in Mansfield in February 2024, when she fell unconscious.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, previously obtained by the Star-Telegram, Reed waited more than two hours to call 911 after his daughter became ill.

When Mansflied police arrived at the apartment they found Neveah unresponsive. After paramedics performed CPR on the toddler she was taken to the hospital, according to the affidavit.

Instead of calling 911 immediately after his daughter was unconscious, Reed searched YouTube for information on how to make a child throw up and tried to get naloxone, a medication that can be used to reverse opioid overdoses, delivered via DoorDash, according to the affidavit.

When investigators arrived Reed didn’t tell them that he suspected his daughter had ingested fentanyl, the Star-Telegram previously reported. A pill on the floor of the apartment near where Nevaeh was found unconscious later tested positive for fentanyl.

Nevaeh died in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Cook Children’s Medical Center 10 days later.

She loved to sing

Nevaeh loved to sing and used a microphone she’d received for Christmas to belt out songs, including ones she made up herself, her mother Stephanie Wallace told the Star-telegram.

Wallace told the Star-Telegram in a phone interview that she feels it’s important to tell Nevaeh’s story because the toddler’s death “was 100% preventable.”

Wallace said she hopes to start a nonprofit organization to draw attention to the problem of children overdosing on fentanyl due to parental negligence. She wants to prevent others from going through this type of tragedy.
