Manitou Superman conquers Incline 500 times

(MANITOU SPRINGS) —  Raymond “Superman” Bailey achieved a remarkable milestone on Saturday, Oct. 26, by climbing the Manitou Incline 500 times in less than a year, joining an exclusive club of only 36 others.

Bailey, known for his distinctive Superman onesie, has averaged more than one hike per day to reach this goal. His journey began six years ago when he decided to quit drinking, and he has since become a familiar sight on the trail.

The Manitou Incline is a challenging trail with 2,768 steps, attracting fitness enthusiasts from all over. The 500 Incline Club, which started in the ’90s, recognizes those who have completed the ascent 500 times within a year. Bailey is now the 37th member of this elite group.

Bailey’s commitment to the Incline began after he took up running, following his decision to quit drinking. His Superman onesie, which he found at a Target store soon after becoming sober, has become his signature attire for each hike.

“I just want to show people that they can accomplish anything if they put their mind to it,” said Bailey. “And ever since I quit drinking, there’s no limit to what the mind can achieve. When your legs want to quit, the mind takes over.”
