Officers say the victims were on their way to the hospital when police found them.
STOCKTON, Calif. — Stockton police are investigating a double shooting that left a man and woman injured while a baby sat unharmed in their car’s backseat.
The shooting happened around 10:20 p.m. Saturday on the 3600 block of Sutter Street, near Oak Park, according to the Stockton Police Department. Officers later found the victims’ car along Airport Way near Park Street, about two miles from where they believe the shooting occurred.
Officers said the victims were en route to the hospital when they called 911. According to police, the 22-year-old woman was critically injured, and the 22-year-old man was in stable condition as of Sunday morning. The infant in the backseat was not hurt.
Dan Waugh, who spent the weekend at Oak Park for a baseball tournament, said he was surprised to learn violence broke out there at night.
“Surprised that what happens at night is a lot different than what’s happening in the day over here,” Waugh said.
When he returned to the park on Sunday, he said he saw shattered glass, likely where the shooting had happened.
“There’s a lot of, it looks like transient kind of folks walking around, and so to see some broken glass or some garbage is not out of the ordinary,” Waugh said. “I’m surprised that some tragedy would strike so close to the stadium.”
Police said they are still trying to determine who opened fire and why.
“Hopefully, the families that are involved can recover and speedy recovery,” Waugh said. “It’s probably a good warning to always be alert and always be safe.”
Stockton police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers to submit tips anonymously at 209-946-0600.
