Man steals boxers and sunflower seeds after wandering around Evangelical Christian School for 11 hours

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Perhaps Edwin Dejesus thought he was entering “The Happiest Place on Earth”. Sporting a blue and white Mickey Mouse hat, the 46-year-old man decided to explore the empty campus of Evangelical Christian School on Sunday afternoon.

At around 1:18 p.m., Dejesus was able to weasel his way through the locked gates at the front of the private school located in the Villas community of Fort Myers. Once inside, he began roaming around the outside of the school, trying to open every door in his sight, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Having no luck, Dejesus wasn’t ready to give up. He spotted the lid of a Tupperware container on the ground near the cafeteria. Dejesus tried to pry open the locked doors to the school.

After being unsuccessful yet again, Dejesus decided to begin his next side quest: entering a school bus. His tour of the bus was short-lived and at around 2:00 p.m. he wandered to a golf cart near the school football fields.

Either the golf cart was quite comfy or his sporadic traverse had finally caught up to him. Dejesus fell asleep for three hours while lounging on the golf cart. During his slumber, his hat fell off his head and onto the back of the vehicle.

Dejesus woke up at around 5:08 p.m. and the first thing that caught his eye — a pair of boxers lying on the back of the golf cart. He examined the underpants before deciding to call them his own, leaving the cart — and his Disney hat — behind as he ventured to another golf cart. He scrounged through the cart’s seat storage, hoping to find more items, ultimately finding zilch.

At around 5:20 p.m., Dejesus made his way to the security guardhouse at the front of the school. He lingered in the empty guardhouse for more than six hours, devouring a security officer’s pack of sunflower seeds. But even more astonishing, he opted to finally leave around midnight — without swiping an AirPods case that had been left charging in the building all along.

On Monday, deputies reviewed the surveillance video and identified Dejesus as the suspect, but they were unable to find any damage to the school while investigating the burglary. However, they did manage to find the Tupperware lid that Dejesus was seen using to try and break into the school.

Later that day, a student told a deputy he found a Mickey Mouse hat near the football fields and had been wearing it all day before turning it in.

Detectives spoke with employees who said they walked into a mess in the guardhouse on Monday morning. Papers and a book were trashed along with sunflower seeds that were scattered around the floor.

Deputies were able to track down Dejesus at a gas station and arrest him on Wednesday. He was charged with burglary, trespassing and theft.

According to the report, Evangelical Christian School stated they would be changing the locks on the front gate to better secure the school.
