Man killed in downtown Sacramento assault identified as bail bondsman

A man killed in an assault in downtown Sacramento early Monday has been identified as 56-year-old Kevin Brace, police said. Brace was a longtime employee of Greg Padilla Bail Bonds, which is located in the area where the assault took place on I Street. Police said a 38-year-old Jacob Mandell, of Sacramento, was arrested on homicide charges in connection with Brace’s death. Police said they responded to reports of the assault in the 500 block of I Street around 4:15 a.m. Officers and later Sacramento Fire Department personnel performed live-saving measures on Brace but he died at the scene. Police said investigators are working to determine the motive for the assault. Anyone with information is urged to call the dispatch center at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-HELP (4357). Mandell appeared in court briefly Wednesday to hear the murder charge against him. He’ll next be due in court on June 12.
