HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Authorities have confirmed one dead and one in serious condition after a traffic stop ended in gunfire between a driver and Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies on Sunday evening.

It began after a male driver refused to exit a vehicle during a traffic stop near the 1000 block of West FM 1960, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a social post.

The man reportedly drove away, sparking a brief chase that ended at the intersection of FM 1960 and Ella Blvd.

According to officials, the man then exited the vehicle and fired at HCSO deputies.

Deputies fired back, striking the man, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

One witness told ABC13 that there were a lot of people outside during the incident.

Officials said a female bystander was hit during the exchange and remains in serious condition, but is expected to survive.

Authorities believe the man had two open felony warrants.

An investigation is ongoing.
