CLEVELAND (WJW) – The man accused of leading sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase that ended with a deadly crash in Cleveland has been indicted, according to prosecutors.

On Tuesday, a Cuyahoga County grand jury returned an indictment charging 24-year-old Jaymore L. Whitaker II with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, failure to comply, child endangering and OVI.

According to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies tried to pull over a vehicle at St. Clair Avenue and East 13th Street at 1:16 a.m. on Sunday.

Investigators said Whitaker, suspected to be under the influence, was driving recklessly without headlights.

He then sped off at a high speed and deputies were given permission to pursue the vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Minutes later, Whitaker reportedly crashed into another vehicle that was stopped at the traffic light at St. Clair Avenue and Addison Road.

The woman driving the other vehicle, 37-year-old Sharday Elder, was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 33-year-old passenger in her vehicle remains in serious condition.

Investigators said Whitaker wasn’t badly hurt in the crash, but two passengers — an 18-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl — were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Whitaker was arrested at the hospital and taken to the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center. He will be arraigned at a later time, prosecutors said.

According to the sheriff’s office, the two deputies involved in the chase were placed on paid administrative leave.
