(FOX40.COM) — The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said a man died after drowning in the Woodward Reservoir on Sunday.

The sheriff’s office said earlier in the day, around 2 p.m., that it received calls about a swimmer who was seen “struggling and in distress.” Officials said around 4 p.m. on social media that they were searching around the Mountain View Point area of the reservoir.

The agency added that the person was a 27-year-old Hispanic male.

“We did everything that we could, tried to dispatch resources, tried to provide that kind of rescue and assistance, and sadly we were unable to do so,” said Sergeant Luke Schwartz with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office.”

He added that as the weather gets hotter, those enjoying the water should remember to put safety measures in place first.

“We want to take this opportunity to just remind everybody to please utilize basic water safety practices. Using a life vest, swimming with a buddy, moderating their alcohol consumption, and being realistic about your swimming capabilities,” Schwartz said.
