CLEVELAND (WJW) — A man was arrested following a fatal hit-and-run in a Cleveland intersection on Labor Day, according to court documents obtained by the FOX 8 I-Team.
The man, identified as 21-year-old Andre C. Diggs, was reportedly driving a Ford Explorer at a high rate of speed down St. Clair Avenue, when he went through a red light hitting a Yamaha dirt bike, according to a police report filed with Cleveland Municipal Court.
The rider of the bike was attempting to take a left onto St. Clair from Nottingham Road when the collision took place, police learned in an investigation. The rider was thrown from his bike and it came to rest in a parking lot where it burst into flames.
The victim, identified as Reginald Phillips, “died as a result of the collision,” police said.
Diggs reportedly fled the scene, but officers were able to track down the highly-damaged vehicle on 1300 block of Penhurst Road. Police said the SUV had been reported stolen from Maple Heights. At that point, Diggs was identified as the driver.
Diggs was initially charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and receiving stolen property.
An investigation is ongoing.
