PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — A man was charged with impersonating a police officer after allegedly keeping his Gary police badge seven years following his employment.
A Porter County deputy conducted a traffic stop on I-94 near mile marker 19 just after 2:20 p.m. Tuesday afternoon due to a cover over a license plate.
The deputy noticed a badge with “police” embroidered on it next to the driver’s firearm.
The driver, identified as Joe Franklin Jr., stated he works in Gary and also had a side job in Michigan City, according to the police report.
The deputy called Gary police and was informed that Franklin Jr. was employed as a reserve officer seven years ago and was not in supposed to be in possession of a badge.
The police report states that Franklin Jr. denied having the badge when the deputy came back to his vehicle.
It was located tucked between the driver’s seat and center console, according to police.
The gun and the badge were taken by police. Franklin Jr. was charged with impersonating a police officer.
