A New Jersey man is accused of killing his girlfriend after she told him she wanted to break up.

Andres Calvachi-Paz, 35, is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree disturbing human remains and third-degree theft, according to an Oct. 30 news release from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

On Oct. 7, 28-year-old Dayana Chisaguano Maleza’s body was found close to a road near Cedar Hill Golf Course in Livingston, prosecutors said.

Calvachi-Paz told investigators he and Maleza were inside their Newark apartment having an argument and she told him she wanted to end the relationship, prosecutors said. After the argument, he strangled Maleza, killing her, according to officials.

Calvachi-Paz put her body in his car and drove around for several hours, then dumped it near the golf course, prosecutors said.

Afterward, Calvachi-Paz sent texts from Maleza’s phone to make it appear as if she were alive, according to officials.

Prosecutors did not clarify what day Maleza died.

Livingston is about a 15-mile drive northwest from Newark.
