A 35-year-old man is dead after a car crashed and erupted in flames overnight in Casco, Maine.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office tells NBC10 Boston affiliate News Center Maine that deputies responded around 1:15 a.m. Sunday to a crash involving a fire on State Park Road near the Casco/Naples town line.
Once on scene, deputies found a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee fully engulfed in flames, with the driver, identified as Nicholas Strout, outside of the vehicle with life-threatening injuries.
Strout, of Hiram, was taken to Bridgton Hospital, where he died from his injuries, officials told News Center Maine.
According to a preliminary investigation, officials say Strout was traveling west on State Park Road toward Naples when his car went off the road and struck a large tree.
State Park Road was closed for several hours following the crash.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but investigators believe speed and alcohol were factors, News Center Maine reports.
