Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the scene near Claiborne Parkway and Portsmouth Boulevard just before 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 13 for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.
The victim was identified as a 20-year-old who Stone Bridge school officials confirmed was a student. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office says she was hit and killed by the driver of a Loudoun County Public School maintenance vehicle.
An investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office concluded 58-year-old Loudoun County School employee Whitney Taylor failed to yield to the pedestrian, a misdemeanor charge. Taylor has been released on a summons, LCSO officials said.
Investigators say Taylor remained on scene.
School officials confirmed, in a letter to the Stone Bridge community, that the student struck by the vehicle had died.
“As you can imagine, we are heartbroken by this loss. A traumatic event such as this can evoke a wide range of emotions, and we know the Loudoun County community joins us in grieving alongside the student’s family. We are sharing this information so parents and caregivers are aware and may speak with their children in the way they feel is most appropriate,” Principal Timothy Flynn wrote in a letter to students, parents and staff at the school.
Flynn said all after-school activities were canceled, and that the school will have mental health professionals on campus for the rest of the week.
“The safety, well-being, and emotional health of our students and staff remain our highest priority. We are prepared to support our school community as we navigate this incredibly difficult time,” Flynn wrote in the letter.
