A lottery player in Maryland used a lucky number to buy a ticket and won a big prize — then a butterfly appeared.

The woman bought a $5 Break The Bank scratch-off at a convienence store in Brooklyn Park, the Maryland Lottery said in an Oct. 10 news release.

“I use lucky numbers,” she told the lottery office Oct. 9. “Whichever game is in my lucky number box, that’s the one I play.”

For this game, she used a number related to a family member who had died recently, she told the lottery office.

She was outside after she scratched the ticket and saw she had won a $50,000 prize.

“It feels like she helped it happen. I was sitting outside after I scratched the ticket and a butterfly landed on the table right in front of me. I know it sounds silly, but I saw meaning in that,” she told lottery officials.

There are five more $50,000 prizes left to win from the Break the Bank scratch-off game.

Brooklyn Park is about a 5-mile drive south from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
